    Sorry about the vocal audio my dudes. Was testing out a new mic. Back to the Shure next video! I appreciate you 🤘

    • @Hexspa
      @Hexspa ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It’s probably not the mic, it’s the extreme compression.

    • @JackTaylorGuitars
      @JackTaylorGuitars  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Hexspa You could well be right, I’m still fairly new to this video making thing, especially the vocal audio 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @Hexspa
      @Hexspa ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@JackTaylorGuitars The closer the mic is to your mouth the less room sound you'll pick up. Specifically, the ratio between the two changes. For maximum clarity, you want more direct signal (your voice) and less noise (the room). About 1' (305cm) is a good starting point but experiment with before/after.
      Though it's virtually always best to get it "right" at the source (low noise, no clipping, no plosives or excessive sibilance), you can also use post processing plugins to help. Some remove room noise, some remove hum, some will 'de-plosive', etc.
      Also, with voice over it's my opinion that too much compression is actually a negative quality. Sure, while many youtubers compress the heck out of their voice over, and some even make it sound good, I think the majority of us are better of using mild compression at most.
      Assuming the room noise isn't too noticeable, you can also use clip gain; but if you work on your delivery (mostly consistent volume, get close for quiet parts, far for loud ones, speak clearly) then your post processing needs will reduce.
      Think of NPR radio. I don't think they used any compression. Just a moderately absorbent space into a Neumann U87 and I believe they engaged the high pass filter; probably mostly for technical reasons. In my opinion, they have some of the most iconic, listenable, and timeless voice over recordings of all time. It's sure better than the hypercompressed/excited news broadcasts that rot people's brains.
      That's my two cents. Good luck.

      I have been waiting for what seems like a long time for my tod10n. It's coming up on 6 months since I pre-ordered it. So seeing comments like this worries me. Cause obviously this guitar is in high demand. I live in Canada so this guitar cost me $1000 so I hope the quality is good.

      Does it work good with effects pedals? Like would it sound good playing thrash metal through heavy distortion?

    • @biviter
      @biviter ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@-jank-willson I have only run it through vst plugins so far, as I don't currently have an amp, but I have tried it with some distortion and it honestly isn't the worst. Not the best with a ton of distortion, but if you dial it back it sounds pretty neat. Not at all a replacement for a traditional electric guitar, though.

  • @Dead-Eye
    @Dead-Eye ปีที่แล้ว +70

    Nice guitar. The sound port in the side is quite common on some 'ukueles. It makes a difference to the player because the sides of the instrument vibrate less than the top and back so it gives the sound created by the top a way to reach your ears directly. A lot of people think the normal top-mounted soundhole is "what lets the sound out" as if it's trapped in the body! The sound comes straight from the vibrating top plate, so as long as the inside isn't sealed (preventing the top from vibrating) the sound is produced with or without a big soundhole in the front.
    I'm still not too keen on the slight piezo-sounding quack/buzziness, but overall it looks like a nice option.
    Thanks for the video.

      Cheers Rick! This is really interesting actually. I'm absolutely no expert on acoustic instruments so that's super helpful to me.
      Yeah, it definitely goes have that quack. Not my favourite either but I think I'll get what I want from it with some fine tuning when it comes to recording. I really appreciate you watching and the insightful comment. Thanks mate 🤘

    • @Tiptronics
      @Tiptronics ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm not convinced on this,
      Acoustic guitars operate through the soundboard being pulled up and down by the strings pulling on the bridge - like if you did CPR on it. This motion is enacting on the air within the body, being forced in and out of the sound hole, creating sound waves that reach your ears as sound.
      So to an extent the sound DOES escape through the sound hole, hence gibson putting a “players port” on their generation series.
      I own one
      It is certainly louder in your face. I’ve also tried concealing each the primary and secondary(side) soundholes. It does affect the direction of the projection, maybe not on a room scale, but locally.
      So i’m not convinced. The soundboard (or “top”) is a big part of the process. And it vibrates the most out of any other face on the body. But it’s more the pre-amp than the amplifier.

Now I'm thinking this has helped me gear towards a more hybrid nylon purchase, as I already got a cheap nylon to expirment and was looking to go further with something I could plug into a practice amp or record from, and even might be useful for future live playing (and get me going with a band) so thanks for sharing your channel content with me/us.

      I have the Stage so I am a bit biased, but I think you get a lot more for you money with it than these Ibanez guitars. The tone is a lot fuller and less....cardboardy. Recommend watching some videos of others playing the Stage to hear what the tone sounds like because it's a lot different than the Ibanez versions. There are also some others to consider like the Godin Multiac, Kiesel NS1 (both used by Tosin Abasi of AAL on different recordings of The Brain Dance and Para Mexer but wayyy more expensive) the ESP LTD TL6N (used by Javier Reyes on Para Mexer). Animals as Leaders has used this style of guitar to make some amazing songs! I think for the money tho, I'd buy the Stage again it's a great value.
      Worth noting that Tosin has his own guitar company so isn't forced to use a specific brand. Tim H. is contracted with Ibanez and Javier with ESP. So Tosin's choice to use the Godin and the Kiesel should say something.

The thing that really kicks this off is a Bose T4S with sound correction. It'll take that slightly nasal pietzo pick-up and shape it into anything you want. Some of the presets are very good, but you could make your own if you want a unique sound ... This is a really good instrument to drive a downstream pedal. Just bought one of these and here are my likes and dislikes - The finish feels a little like plastic and I think the binding is painted on. The sound-hole is rough around the edges (easily sanded), the action was a little higher than expected (4mm). Perhaps a scratch plate or truss rod cover would look nice? On the plus side - I absolutely love it and havnt put it down. Its so easy to play, it sounds great plugged in, the neck is superb, the scale length is perfect, its super light. As an intermediate, I have spent many years looking for "the guitar" and have bought and sold many (and still have a few), - I think I have found "the guitar" - Its fantastic and I havnt touched my other guitars in over a week. Its obviously not going to cut it in a rock band scenario, but for the sheer enjoyment of playing, do yourself a favour and buy one.

    Hi, bro pls can you help me I probably searched the whole internet and still didnt get the answer. I have this guitar but I hate the strings cutting into the wood of the bridge so I ordered those little string beads. That would be okay but I also want to use Savarez high/medium tension strings (bass hard, treble normal). Do you think it´s safe to use this combination of such strings and string beads? Is it possible that the pressure or tension on the bridge somehow changes and potentialy damage the bridge? Im absolute unexperienced noob and Ive seen many pictures of TOD10N with bridges ripped off and I dont want that to happen.

      Hey dude! To preface, I'm kind of a noob when it comes to nylon strung guitars so don't take my thoughts as gospel here. I have seen the pictures of the TOD10N too so I get why you're worried. If you're unsure, don't do the work yourself, have a guitar store give you some advice or do the restring/setup. Hmm, walnut isn't used too often for fingerboards on either electric guitars or acoustics because it isn't quite as hard as other common fingerboard wood choices like rosewood (2700 janka), macassar ebony (3220 janka), jatoba (2690 janka), pau ferro (1960 janka ), indian laurel (2340 janka), with walnut having a janka hardness rating of only 1010. Funny thing is that walnut is relatively expensive lumber as well, so raises the question as to why they chose that wood for the "less expensive" version of the Tim Henson signature.

Unlike the FRH10N or the TOD10N, it doesn't have a sound hole and the controls are at the front, like an electric guitar.

Also - be aware of the sets where strings 1 to 3 are black - don't play them outside, in sunlight; the black absorbs heat far better and your tuning goes to hell in a handbasket! Stay with the clear or white strings - I've just checked a new set of Dunlops... they're clear and they're standard tension!

    I just got an FRH10N of my own and there's a weird buzzing resonance of something within the body, like a wire or piece of debris, that you can hear when playing a high E or F on any string. It's really punchy and annoying while plugged in. Other than that no problems with the guitar.

    • @JackTaylorGuitars
      @JackTaylorGuitars  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's really weird dude, I can't think what it might be. Unless it's like harmonic resonance causing the wiring for the piezo pickup to vibrate or something? I have yet to find a video review of this guitar where I'd like the sound of it. For my taste this is very harsh and brittle-sounding. Also the absence of tone and volume controls makes it impractical for stage use, and where else would I want to use such guitar?
    Godin multiac sounds much better IMO and at about this price range I liked some of the demos of the Cordoba stage. Not quite as good as the Multiac, but great at the price. Even the Yamaha silent guitar is preferable to this for me.

      The top classical guitar from Artist Guitars also has a piezo pickup and a slightly radiused fretboard - but the body is deeper - more like a standard classical guitar. I’d be spoilt for choice - but I would seriously go for an Ibanez! Shame you can’t get a 50 year old version - their guitars in the 70’s were drop-dead gorgeous!

      Tried both, and the Godin wins. The Godin i tried had a larger neck - i believe 48, perhaps 50, and it was far more comfortable. The Godin has a slightly more nasal sound, and i believe it's semihollow, but has much more definition when amplified. Godin is slightly larger, so more comfortable to play sitting. The Ibanez has a clearer sound, but no equalization, neck is probably too narrow for articulated jazz or classical, and loses definitoon when amplified. That said, hats off to Ibanez for the nice finish and good materials used at a fair price

    The only real drawback in my mind is the lack of a flexible onboard preamp, but it's unnecessary in my case, as my preamp sports body resonance IRs in a variety of sizes and grab'n'go, always-available three-knob EQ. Still, it'd be nice to have at least a volume control directly on the instrument. It's maybe worth noting that the plugged in examples here are very effect-laden; it's possible to get a very natural classical guitar tone from this type of axe. (mine's a Washburn Festival Nylon) The recipe on my Zoom A3 is piezo compensated input, any of half a dozen body rez IRs (from a mid-focused parlour to a cavernous Southern Jumbo, EQ to taste, then two reverbs in series. The first is a very tight ambience reverb; short but mixed fairly high. (a short, dark plate will work if you don't have an ambiance algorithm) Follow that with a standard hall or large room reverb with a bit of pre-delay and the early reflections mixed very low. If/when I'm not worried about stage volume, I'll often add a mini pencil condenser aimed near the bridge or where the neck meets the body. I'm thinking seriously of picking up one of these beauties, mainly because I find the classical-style flat fingerboard and chunky neck on my Washburn annoying, despite it's a wonderful addition to my sound pallette.

    This may sound strange but I love both metal and flamenco, and I always wanted to learn flamenco guitar but they're too big, this is the PERFECT mix of an eléctric/FLAMENCO guitar, particularly this model, with the classic flamenco guitar finish. Flamenco guitars are too big if you're used to play electric guitar, but this would make the transition much easier, plus you can plug it into your interface and no need to set up microphones and find an ideal room to record. Funny thing, years ago, I messaged some Spanish Luthiers to see if they could make a flamenco guitar with a pickup and electric guitar scale length, but no one would do it. Thanks Ibáñez!.
    Edit: Try play some spanish rumba or popular songs with it, you'll enjoy it more than playing it the 'classical' way :).
