I think the deleted scene with Renard at the beginning could have worked better had they done a Blofeld on him. In other words, kept his face hidden. Only show him below the chin with his hands holding the rifle, or his back to the camera like in the Cigar Girl's close ups. That way the audience would be alluded to him and get their big dramatic reveal later on.
Too generic, reveals nothing (since their conversation is insignificant), you can see he has nothing to say and the key things he cannot reveal to the audience yet, and yes, we don't see him for quite some time before we do, because he simply has no part to play in the early stages of the movie, especially since it's a time in which we're establishing Elektra. If they pulled Blofeld without him having any reason to be in the scene, it would give away the "moustache twirling villain" feeling it gives right here. They did well throwing this scene out. Made him feel like a shadow looming over the figures that move. And when he finally appears he feels as menacing as Alec does in the Golden Eye (just a little bit lesser). That being said, there was so much more potential in Renard than what was accomplished with him. I was impressed by his introduction in the HQ; a villain that knows no pain because of a bullet in his head, that will end up killing him, but until it does it will keep making him stronger. This should have been played on much more than it was. I'd cut some of the chase scenes half (especially the one in the beginning) just to see him growing in power on the account of the fact he knows he'll die, and the game between the lack of the fear of death and the fear of death itself improving his instability. He was also played by a brilliant actor. Lack of screen time made him half as memorable as he could have been.
I don’t know if this has already been commented on, but it definitely is Samantha Bond as Moneypenny driving the DB5 in that deleted scene. I have a photo of both her and Pierce Brosnan in the car from some magazine that I purchased ‘back in the day’. It was one of many pictures used to promote the film throughout the article, probably before they decided to delete that scene. I’d have to dig up my old magazines from that time period, but I definitely remember that she was in the driver’s seat. By the way, I love your videos - you do a great job!
It would’ve been interesting to see, if they had put the title sequence after the bank escape, how they would’ve segued from Bond on the roof of the Millennium Dome to King’s funeral. Because that would’ve been a bit of tonal whiplash - going straight from a fast-paced and light-hearted action scene to a sombre funeral.
Very true actually! The shift from Bond hanging onto the side of the dome and into the credits is really well done and the lose that would have been a shame too.
I guess there intention was to have a short sequence as the prologue then followed by a long action scene after the credits as they later did for Casino and Quantum but they were right to change it for this film.
The exposition regarding the oil refinery's history was interesting enough, only lasted a minute, so I think it would have done no harm to keep it, and it adds to the story of Elektra's passion for her empire. As for the electric shock bit, I cannot see what they were thinking of even writing that

I remember seeing this at the cinema, and I could swear there was a scene that's been removed from the film that was in the theatrical release. It's an extension of the scene where Electra pays off Zhukovsky at the casino. After she loses, Bond decides to play himself, and uses the X-ray glasses to essentially cheat and win. Has anyone else ever seen that, as I'm certain I didn't hallucinate that, and have never seen it since nor mentioned anywhere?
Great video as always. I would have liked to see the scene with Bond and Electra in the car. I don't mind the politics. As you said, it's very Fleming like, and it keeps with the more serious (at least partly serious) tone of the film. While I would have liked to have seen more of Cigar Girl that scene is weak. I like this film but really would have had to take points off if they included that Q Branch bit.
These reactions to deleted scenes and features on the blu ray and DVD extras are brilliant Calvin. Agree with the oil field scene that worked well that was a major scene to cut when you think of the expense of going out there to film it. Kinda sets the tone visually for what the film was about. I would have kept that in. And the The Things We Do For England quip it works because there would have been a knight in the armour who did bad deeds for Queen and country. My gut instinct whenever there's scenes featuring Pierce as Bond is to want them in the film even when they don't work in the film. The Aston should have been in there just for the heck of it. The intro with Renard doesn't work and the Q scene without Q is so bad it's funny..you can even see the wires on his coat when he's flipped.
The Q branch scene was funny (especially your reaction), but I definitely agree it should have been left out. I also agree about the Bond Electra scene driving through the oil fields. I think it would have really built both characters and their motivations in the film to have included it.

Why MI6 have one I have no idea. It just seems a weird sciencey joke. Tonally it doesn't fit TWINE, or a Bond film. No idea how quality control didn't nix this one at the writing stage.
"Unlike all of Thunderball." Same with Tomorrow Never Dies. You know pretty much from the beginning what Carver is planning to do. But in that case, Bond knows the plot as well. So there's absolutely no mystery for the audience. Still, great movie.
It seems weird to stage this, and have Samantha and Pierce in it, and then not even show them. Why come up with the conceit then, which as Calvin points out makes logical sense? Such a rare opportunity to have Moneypenny drive it.
Hey Calvin, loving these Deleted Scenes Reactions videos. Among your increased Lockdown Content, will you be reviewing The Rhythm Section, now it's available to rent/buy? With it being the only spy film to be produced by EON that's not Bond.
16:20 People in body bags. Seems to have been an inspiration to the shot in Skyfall showing the bodies of dead people with M next to them. And yes, Mr Calvin, you are being generous. What I like with the deleted scenes on the Bond series is most of them are useless and thus cut out for good reasons. Even if I like some of them across so many movies, objectively, most of them would have slowed the pace and not added, nor clarifyed anything. The only opposite example that comes to mind is the part that explains why Plenty O'Toole is mistaken for Tiffany Case in Diamonds Are Forever.
I'm with you Calvin. I would only have kept the vehicle scene. And maybe Moneypenny driving the Aston. I'm very fond of Apted. You can tell he really gave TWINE his best shot.
Vicktor Zokas aka Renard the anarchist. That introduction and hologram scene blew my mind when I was 7. When I started to show my wife bond films, I started her with Goldeneye and upwards. When we watched TWINE she said to me that she thinks Elektra is fishy and will turn on them as she's in on it just as the pipeline bomb scene was happening. Im looking forward to showing her Roger Moores bond though. Next in line after No time to die comes in cinemas.
Some facts I pulled off the wiki about elektra king so In the novelisation, Elektra does not die immediately after she's shot by Bond. Instead, as she lies dying on the bed, she begins to sing a lullaby. The film's original ending had Elektra survive her gunshot wound and was recovering in hospital, where she was visited by Bond. The ending was changed because it was considered too downbeat.
I hoped you also comment on the scenes Apted deleted or changed with boatchase. It whas very good choose not starting the maintitle after Bond jump out of the window. Boat chase have have a long screentime that you need a break. Talking about a choose like that, i think there should have consider for Casino Royale to include the scenes of South Africa with intro of Mr White and jumping and it end with explosion who changed in to the maintitles. Or even better start the movie in South Africa and cut whole dryden thing.
The other problem with the "Things I do for England" line being cut is that ... he's currently in Scotland. Brings up questions about Bonds Scottish identity etc.
I would actually have liked to see Bond arriving at the funeral in the Aston Martin. That would make him the second Bond to drive the DB5 the most, losing to Craig only.
I know this is a different Bond film, but I really want to here someones thoughts on this ... I watched Goldeneye the other day and there is something I cant quite understand. Alec Trevelyan at the start faked his death I know, maybe Ourumov shot the floor I'm not sure but we know it was all planned. So how come at the end of the movie Bond flips him over the railing and shoots him he survived .. and then he falls like 100 meters on to solid concrete but is still alive .. surely that would have been instant death?
This was my favorite of the Brosnan Bond films and probably my second favorite overall. I didn't care for the car scene. I didn't like the Renard scene. The other scenes I could take or leave. The one scene I DID like was the one you hated. I thought the "hair raising scene" was so weird and bizarre that it was worth showing.
I liked it and could definitely see it being used on a mission. I could even see it as a nifty saved by the skin of his teeth way of getting out of a hairy situation for Bond himself. Just miniaturise the tech. That said, the whole sequence was sooooo poorly executed, this made it really weird.
The most important thing is the director confirming that Renard is NOT the main villain and Elektra is!

Quite a burn on Apted with that 'Don't show him STAR WARS it might blow his mind', Calvin!
Just watched this film this morning
More greatness from Calvin. Rather made my day.
Great work as always Mr Dyson!
I could hear the umlaut on that Thank Goodness it was so intense.
6:23 HaphazardStuff must be rolling his eyes by now. ;)
I liked the history lesson in the car with Electra and Bond. Was only short, wouldn't have hurt much to keep it, very Fleming, as you say
This and Goldeneye are the best Bond movies ever made.
Love your reaction to the Q lab scene 😃😃😃
Interesting.... love it when you say that mate. I think all of that is better left chopped out
Wonder whether that is Moneypenny driving the DB5 or if it might be Robinson driving.
Brosnan's accent is all over the place in that driving scene.
Thought for a fan project: get all the deleted scenes and see if fans can recut the film to make these deleted scenes work.
The nurse is in the 2nd mission of the N64 version of the game. You have to escort her to the vault to help King.
Even more scenes from this movie....hmm I still like the dog one
Also the Q lab scene is all kinds of crazy
Didn't Roger say "What I do for England!" in a trailer for Octopussy as well?
For some reason I can hear Timothy saying it as well.
RIP Michael Apted :(
oh i didn't know he died until i saw this comment
I love this series!
I hope the rope connected to the stuntman in the shock scene was supposed to be edited out if it had made it into the film
11:01-11:07 my thoughts exactly! Love the clearly visible wire on the guy too.
I'm guessing they would have Digitally removed that if they'd used it in the finished film.
Is the background music from the TWINE video game?
Just reinforcing a cliche of 90's action films, the ultimate close up before a grisly death.
@@ricardocantoral7672 haha yes, after the fall, he literally just had a bloody nose!
pierce brosnan is the best James Bond and no one can tell me otherwise.
Has anybody seen a clip of Michael Apted smiling?
I’ve heard tales. They say his smile is cursed and all who see it perish at the next full moon...
7:41 best face
I wonder if we'll ever get a scene where Calvin's like "why the HELL did they cut it out???"
Could you do the deleted scenes to license to kill next, i would like to see you opinion on those ones.
Yea Renard's intro definitely needed to be cut. It just felt... Bland. Also, Calvin's face towards the female scientist scene lol 😂
Hi Calvin. U should do a top 10 non Fleming bond books video
I'd keep the elektra scene. She could never have too many scenes 😍
the doctor scene gets me all the time, I wish I had a doctor like that :)
I'm surprised you haven't done your own gunbarrel sequence at this point lol
4:28 hilarious
"A world made up of just not enough deleted scenes, idk never played the game"
Better deleted scenes than usual.
12:12 no that was a big thing in the 80s 🤣
