    "Smooth ride M" sounded more like Pierce being a little bit passive aggressive about the shaky car.
    Main issue with the scene is that it is too shaky, too long, and too much exposition.
    It's good to get more details on Carver and other stuff, but the scene should have been done different or the exposition should have been put somewhere else in the story. The film version was better.

      As is your profile picture. _Christopher Lee…_ may the legend himself rest in peace.
      He played so many great characters, but Lord Summerisle was possibly the best, and certainly The Wicker Man is one of the greatest horror films of all time.
      Oh and just as a question: *What’s your favourite cut of the film?*

  • @CorneelVf

    The problem with under-utilising Ricky Jay isn't just in these deleted scenes to me, but for a large part in the script. Seeing as TND had its script written while filming, it's understandable, but I still think that if you hire this card-throwing magician for your film, that that character gimmick should be thoroughly embedded in the script. Even with the 2 deleted scenes back in, I feel like they could've done more with it. Or, differently put, if you can remove those signature moments this easily from the final cut, then the gimmick wasn't well-thought out in the first place.

    • @Bundeskaiser
      @Bundeskaiser 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Could have been that film's Oddjob. To kill people by throwing cards could be even more hilarious than the hat throwing kill.
      This never bothered my as I never knew who Ricky Jay is. But now with that new information this makes TND even worse for me. Sad, that movie had great potential. The theme would have given the filmmakers a lot of options and then they came out with a very generic plot we've seen several times before and after that, with the only difference that the villain doesn't want to have a ressource monopoly but an information monopoly. A massively underdeveloped plot.
      Still, the 2nd best Brosnan Bond but compared to Goldeneye and considered which potential this movie had, it's disappointing.

    I still don't even understand why they cut out the Jaguar scene. Why? It doesn't hurt the film at all and its an amusing little few seconds long gag between Q and James. Why remove it? The only reason I can ponder is that the car he gets was a BMW and Bond's comment is talking of a competitor car the Jaguar. And they perhaps didn't want to have a gag using a joke for another brand of car besides the one that actually is in the movie and being sponsored and/or promoted here. Makes no sense otherwise. I actually chuckled at it and its a great sight gag. Should be in the film.

    • @davidjames579

    That bit about Carver's parentage is very Fleming-esque and shows what a nasty vindictive person he is and should've been kept whilst the rest of the scene was rightly ditched. The scene with Paris is a nice bit of character development and mirrors 'M' pimping out Bond.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think it nicely underlines Carver's abandonment issues that seem to drive his character. He knows or feels that Paris doesn't like him and would want to leave him, for somebody else.
      Something not touched too much on in the films is part of Bond's job requires him to prostitute himself for his country. With Paris, it's not her job.

    The stealth boat scene works better in the film. Carver is louder and much more to the point, and therefore he's taking the threat seriously, and the henchman being temporarily distracted works better than him being asleep at his desk while his boss in the room and the ship is heading into a literal warzone. Taking a minute to order the death of a henchman before you address the fact that someone is planting bombs on your ship is just silly.

      A big problem with deleted scenes from most motives is that they're preserved much less carefully than the theatrical footage. Seriously though, I do appreciate they wanted to spice up mission briefing to avoid the cliches, but I swear, someone would have become so annoyed with that terrible car simulator that they used for special effects with a car driving. It's no surprise that limousine doesn't offer the most cushy ride, thanks to its 1960's suspension and chassis.

    I'm into the humour of the alcoholic briefing way more than you, Calvin. On balance I would still drop it because it takes away from the urgency of racing through the streets to meet the 48 hour deadline.
    As for Ricky Jay's cards though, I think they look really silly. In order for it to work you'd have to set up that there are a couple of sharp, weaponised cards in the deck. As it's presented here, it just looks like cardboard tearing through flesh and TV screens - really stupid.
    Of course, the deleted content that I actually want most, is all the footage omitted at the rough cut stage showing the film was intended to be significantly more violent. That content is examined in the brilliant TH-cam series, _Cutting Edge_ and I heartily recommend giving it a look.

    I definitely would support a new cut that added the Ricky Jay card scenes. It's very Bond-like having a villain like that. I would've liked it if they had yet another scene where he actually kills someone with them.
    Sadly I think if they'd been left in, they'd just be used by Brosnan haters (Have you noticed how it's almost impossible for people to say the love the Craig era without turning into Brosnan bashing?) to dismiss the film as ridiculous, campy or one more example for them to say their go-to BS line "Oh he was alright but had terrible scripts" (yeah so bad that Craig's era ripped them off lol).

    The problem with Ricky Jay is that he can't act. And throwing cards at somebody doesn't work in a Bond world filled with guns, bombs, cars and so on. It looks ridiculous in my humble opinion. Gambit in the X-Men, that works.

    Problem with this film is lack of good henchmen. Stamper is pretty much just the strongman aryan-looking guy, e.g. Red Grant mixed with German dude from For Your Eyes Only. Card throwing gupta who’s cocky is somewhat similar to Octopussy knife-throwing brothers but still original. Imagine he had razor-edged cards and actually fought on the stealth boat too.

    I love Tomorrow Never Dies. It is an underrated Bond adventure, it was plagued by production issues, but not too many issues to give us an action spy thriller that I can enjoy on a good day or a bad day. The deleted scenes that should have been left in are the Card scenes which is a shame because they were brilliant and relevant to building Gupta as a villain. Another deleted scene that should have been left was the Q scene with the Jaguar, it is comedy gold. And the other deleted scene that should have been left in the film is where Stamper stamps the crewman to death, but I can understand that it might have been cut due to get a 12 rating from the BBFC instead of 15 rating. But I love the film nonetheless, it’s one I can watch whenever I fancy.

    Excellent observations. Totally agree with the Ricky Jay scenes they should have been in there. Only a few seconds like you say. The only thing that didn't work for me out of those scenes was one in the bumpy car it's just poorly shot and executed and wouldn't add anything worthwhile to the film. I wish the Jaguar joke had been left in and the punchline to the hire car being returned through the window. I wanted the later because I'd seen a publicity still of the car being returned to the rental shop with Pierce in shot before seeing the film and I was like just the picture alone was funny and it felt like they didn't follow through with the gag when I watched the film. The film would have been even better with some of those cut scenes IMO.

    The deletion of the Ricky Jay scenes are really a travesty. He had the potential to be a far better character than Stamper. I kind of like both Jonathan Pryce scenes. The alternative briefing scene in the car was awful. I actually like the bit with Stamper killing Carver's employee. It at least gave Stamper more of a presence. I have to admit I've never been a fan of the remote control car chase largely because of the end of it; and that little add on would have made it worse.

    Funny, I actually spotted the big cat pacing in the background of the Q scene in the actual film, and got to wondering what the heck it was doing there.
    Is it just me, or do those terribly dubbed animal calls (what sounds like several different big cats and I think some other beasts as well!) as they open the crate up make her sound like she just got back from helping Doomguy spill some demon blood in hell? XD
    And at the end there... no, I'm pretty sure that's not what a growl from something that size sounds like. It sounds more like they decided for some reason to make it sound like she was purring at James (some big cats can make the sound, they just have to stop to breathe, so it's not considered a "true" purr -- but some others make a different call in its place; I don't know where jaguars fall on that spectrum. They overdubbed all her other sounds, though, so they'd have just used a recording of a cougar either way).
    Heh, maybe the jaguar *is* a 00 agent on assignment! They might as well give her a license to kill, 'cause she's gonna be doing it one way or another.
    ...hey, what do they call it when they give you a "license to devour"?
    On another note, the whip sound effect for the playing card in the Bond & Wai Lin escape scene is completely ridiculous, 'specially since they didn't make any sound on the earlier scene where Gupta was practicing.
