    The OHMSS rooftop chase scene is the number one of all these I'd like to see. It's a shame that they waited another 30 years to have Bond in a chase scene in London. Or was there ever any action scenes in London between OHMSS and The World Is Not Enough that I'm just forgetting? I guess it makes sense considering very little of the individual movies ever take place in London; usually Bond gets debriefed by M, has a quick flirtation with Moneypenny, goes to Q branch to get some new gadgets, and then is off on the mission. That's one of the things I like about Skyfall, how much of it takes place in London including an extended action scene.

  • @thomsboys77
    @thomsboys77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There had been some rumours circulating on various forums that the very first VHS release of Dr. No, in 1981/82, contained the work print of the film, which had Bond shooting Professor Dent six times in the back (instead of 2), extended fight between Bond and the car driver, and more risqué dialogue (e.g Dr. No saying “I’m sure she will amuse the guards” instead of “I’m sure the guards will amuse her”) but I’m not sure if this has ever been confirmed true or not

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a find, as Eon claim they've lost the footage of Dent being shot that many times, and given it's age it's probably disintegrated.

      Apparently they only shot up to Bond fighting Phidian (Bray's assistant) on the steps behind the college with St Paul's in the background. Phidian would have got away, and Bond would have chased him to the real life Post Office building on nearby King Edward Street. Once inside, Phidian would flee to the basement and get into the tunnels of the real life Mail Rail, a miniaturized tube network used to ferry post across London. Here in a tussle, Bond would kick him in front of a train, killing him. After this, a mock train crash would be staged at St Pancras Station by MI6, with Phidian's body and several unclaimed dead bodies onboard, so a story could appear in the papers showing Phidian had died this way, so as to not spook Blofeld. While this wasn't filmed, the story does appear as a headline in the finished film. When Bond arrives in Switzerland and is met by Irma Bunt, look at the newspaper the MI6 agent watching Bond is pretending to read.

      @@davidjames579 that would have been a cool scene, but maybe would have felt uneven and the pacing would be thrown off.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@CobyMcGhie It is very intricate. And I don't know whether they would have shown us the train crash (expensive and time consuming) or just had M tell Bond about it. I would still love to see Bond in 60's London though in an action and chase scene.
      By the way, the angel statue on Bray's desk in the finished film is what tips Bond off. He picks it up and finds a microphone on it. Bray tells Bond Phidian gave it to him as a gift. Phidian of course hears this and scarpers. By the time Bond and Bray get to Phidian's workshop the tape he was recording the conversation is gone. Bond says to Bray, if he gets it to Blofeld we're finished or something like that.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      There's stills from it on the Commander 007 site. Earlier in the film Blofeld has his cat claw a minion and the man dies as it turns out the claws have a poison on them! How this works, and how the cat doesn't lick it off I have no idea, but this rather clumsy and stupid method of killing backfires on Blofeld when the cat claws him! So in this film Bond never meets Blofeld, and instead he is killed by his pet cat! It sounds like something from Casino Royale 67.

    The Post Office Mail Rail is an underground railway line in London, but not part of the Tube network. It was only used by the Post Office to move letters and parcels through London quickly, as road traffic congestion was preventing letters getting to their destinations on time. It’s one of those nifty things that I think is pretty cool, even if nobody else does.

    I'm kind of sad about not seeing Spectre's alleged original screenplay.
    From what I've seen (it might be a fake, but who knows), Blofeld would have way more presence. We would get some of its backstory with some flashbacks of the 90s, where Blofeld met Mr. White. They were a group of soldiers called "Le Spectre" (as "Scepter" in French, not an achronym) that got brought to the desert. The group was dying and they needed food, so, he gave one of the soldiers' corpse as food for the other ones.
    I know it's not much, I'm pretty sure you can find way more information that actually reveals more than my comment but I just wanted to point that out.

    I'm quite interested in the deleted footage from Diamonds Are Forever showing extra shots for the Oil Rig Climax. We know from Michael Wilson's commentary on the DVD that the Frogmen shown at the start of the footage would've taken part in the fight (probably carrying mines in containers to damage the rig). It would've made the attack feel much more exciting before the unfilmed battle between Bond and Blofeld at a Salt Mine. I so wish the entirety of that would've been filmed, but I guess like the OHMSS London chase scene it would've made DAF much longer.

    Love to see all those. Sadly the days of DVD which include all the bells and whistles of deleted scenes commentarys funny outakes and on set and behind the scenes stuff and all the fun stuff we used to get as standard seem to be a thing of the past but the Bond releases are still pretty good at providing extra content. I'm sure the producers and film studios would have kept them in a vault somewhere. I have outakes from an Elvis film from 1970 which have never been officially released. The film studios hold all this stuff in the vaults. The main interest for them is finnancial return but if you're re-releasing the same films over and over there has to be some incentive for the loyal suckers to buy the films all over again and new content will always be a draw for me when buying the Bond films on disc. Like you I started with the VHS series and went to the special editions the ultimate editions DVD and the Blu Ray releases. Also want to see some retrospectives on the Brosnan and Craig films. Like you say a lot of the content was promotional material rather than a proper retrospective look at how the film was made as with the Inside documentarys. Those were brilliant!

      Sadly deleted material is not always tracked or even well looked after. Lots of times deleted material has only been found (and often by accident) in studios in other parts of the world. It's incredible to think, but this stuff often just gets forgotten about, or people lose track of where it went. Of course, when this happens, the film can deteriorate. I wish studios would be far more careful, and log and keep all un-used footage and takes. At least with Digital production and storage there is more chance of more copies being made and tracked, rather than relying on finding decrepit film reels.

    I believe the Bulgarian mess up was down to the heavy rewriting going on during filming, when they shot that, he didn't die earlier. That was added to pump up Red Grant's presence, creating the problem.
    I also believe Marc Forster recorded a commentary for a special edition of Quantum that would have presumably included some deleted scenes, but for whatever reason (low sales on the Casino special?), it never got a release.

    Another reason why the alternate ending of Quantum of Solace was deleted was because Marc Forster wanted the next director to have the freedom to make the film they wanted instead of being forced to finish the Quantum storyline and make a trilogy, which is quite nice of him! Also, when Bond shoots Mr. White at the end, it was supposed to turn into the gunbarrel of the film, just like at the beginning of Casino Royale, so it was always planned to be at the end, but it would've been another in movie moment, which would've been awesome to see, really wish they would release it. Makes one think tho, if they hadn't deleted it, maybe that would've turned into Craig's thing, the gunbarrel always being an actual significant moment in the film and not always tied to the beginning, who knows! Very interesting to think about
    Edit: Forgot to mention, knowing how Craig has wanted to quit ever since Skyfall, if they had kept the alternate ending and the third film hadn't been Skyfall and they instead had made a threequel that finished what Casino Royale started and Quantum followed, Craig might've just done 3 films. Crazy how things could've turned out completely differently

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes. He made some critical remarks about the productions, swore and said some potentially libelous stuff about people who worked on the films (he said one guy who supplied the production of Dr No was probably a gangster, that an actress I won't name "fucked everything that moved" on the film set and still does, and he talked about crew members smoking weed on Dr No). He named them all as well, and said Fleming was a snob. Guy Hamilton also said some candid stuff on his commentary for Goldfinger. Cubby hadn't heard these before they were released, but blew his top when it was brought to his attention. He immediately ordered all unsold stock to be recalled, and the Criterion Laserdiscs of the first three Bond films were re-released without the commentaries. As you can imagine the copies that were sold go for high prices now. Criterion or Eon will never release these, but someone has helpfully downloaded the audio files from the discs and posted them online. They're very entertaining. I get why EON won't approve them, but they're wonderfully candid and natural, like Terence and Guy had one too many whiskeys and spilled the beans, and more entertaining than some studio mandated commentaries.

    I really want to see all the missing Quantum of Solace scenes. The Mister White ending, the use of "Bond, James Bond," the payoff to Agent Fields's name... there have been a lot of Director's Cuts announced this year, I think it's high time QOS got a do-over. Who knows - if they did a second pass on the action scenes, the movie's quality might be elevated by a significant degree.

    Since it was a direct sequel to Casino Royale, Bond should have definitely wrapped up his unfinished business with those two characters.

    The Train that would have killed Phidian is indeed a Royal Mail Train. There used to be Mail Rail, an automated mini tube network to move mail from the main sorting office on King Edward Street near St Pauls to the Paddington sorting office. In the script, Phidian runs to The Post Office on King Edward Street, loses Bond and posts the recording to Blofeld. Bond then spots him and the chase continues down into the basement of the building and onto Mail Rail. Bond/MI6 recover the package before it leaves the Post Office. . The sequence would then continue after Phidian's death, with Bond at St Pancras Station meeting up with Q (dressed as a conductor!). They oversee a passenger train, that then leaves. We are then shown that the train's passengers are all corpses, including Phidian! I'm not sure how this would have been conveyed, presumably through Bond and Q's dilaog but all the corpses are John Doe's who died accidently (just so we know MI6 didn't kill several random people). The train speeds through the night, branching off onto what turns out to be a dead end, and crashing (the driver is able to escape before the crash but after over-riding the dead man's handle). This leads into Phidian's death being explained away as an accident, and is referenced in a headline on Shaun Campbell's newspaper seen in the film, about "19 people killed in rush-hour train crash."
    As amazing as this all would have been, you can see why it could have killed the pacing, and the expense and logistics of the train crash scene alone for a minor character would have been too much. As Calvin says the beginning part of this was filmed, then paused, with the intention of finishing it later. Towards the end of shooting, with the schedule behind and costs mounting, along with the length of the Rough Cut, it was decided to lop this off the schedule.
    Mail Rail would however get a movie appearance, but not until 1991 and the Bruce Willis Comedy Classic Hudson Hawk. There it plays not itself though, but The Vatican's underground mail railway.
    Interesting to see MI6 faking the news, but of course we do see that in Tomorrow Never Dies when M instructs that Carver's death be reported to the press as him falling off his yacht.

      Good spot! I suspect faulty memory. I believe that commentary was recorded in the early 90s and he does tend to ramble on and get distracted by tangents and so on. I had to trim out a few of his sidebar comments to keep it concise for the purpose of this video! He also talks about Kerim’s cigar but it just looks like a cigarette in a holder to me...

      @@calvindyson Correct, Kerim Bey was a cigarette smoker and he used a stone holder for it which Bond takes after his death and gives to his son. I would not mind seeing the extra footage from Goldfinger if it still exists myself. As a film buff, I do know that cinema film stock does wear down over time to a point where it is not usable. Thankfully, a reel of it might survive some where. I was overjoyed in 2019 when Sony Pictures discovered several deleted scenes from Ghostbusters (1984) and released to the public on Blu Ray for the first time. Fingers crossed that the Goldfinger and The Man With The Golden Gun footage is around some where in decent shape.

    Christopher Lee addressed the cut footage in an interview, where he said as they were doing "the duel," you see Scaramanga dive into the rocks, so them shouting at each other happens right after Bond turns, shoots and notices Scaramanga not there. Yes he cheated the duel, obviously believing Bond could just as easily defeat him in this fair fight, but he doesn't actually "cheat" in his career as an assassin--to which he is very much a skilled professional. Bond picks up a thermos flask from the sea-plane blast and fills it with from a trickle of avgas coming from the plane, throws and shoots it (the bullet count by Nic-Nac would have been edited too) to where Scaramanga dives into the fun house.

    I completely forgot Paul Ritter was in a Bond movie until you mentioned Guy Haines in Quantum of Solace. He was so good at being bad in Chernobyl that its amazing how squandered he was at the time.

      is it just me or does he look an awful lot like Stephen Dillane, in Quantum of Solace ? I remember watching the film after a long hiatus a few years ago and thinking to myself : "OMG, they actually got Stannis the Mannis in that film!!!"

    Wouldn't a shooting script describe the missing scenes? I remember the Royal Mail Van, and its too bad that scene wasn't included. It would have been a nice element. I remember seeing the henchman (henchmen?) in the shadows, but I don't think I ever noticed him on the floor. Shows how quickly this scene moves and they could leave the shot in without viewers wonder, WTH? The DAD plane scene looks intriguing, and actually, I would have liked to have seen that....I didn't understand the rationale until you mention the passport control question. I remember reading the storyline of the OHMSS chase through London, and adding it would have required adding an intermission! I love the film, it would have been great to included it, but the film was long to begin with, and would have challenged some viewers' patience. I've watched a couple of "first time watching" videos of younger people viewing the film for the first time, and they are PISSED by the ending. I've always thought that Peter Hunt did a masterpiece, and wasn't afraid to tell a story in a brilliant way. I'd have loved to have seen him continue.
