I completely agree on keeping the scene with Plenty sneaking back into the room, with one caveat: an insert shot of Tiffany's driver's license and a zoom in on her address. That's all you need to fill that annoying plot hole.
As for the car chase, the original version of Bond's car exiting the alley could have been kept with a simple cut or fade out of the vehicle going down the street, either before you see the crowd or so that it fades to the next scene before it's really noticeable. The insert of the shot of Bond and Tiffany as the car tilts makes the whole sequence very jarring and awkward.

Great point James Kennedy. It now appears that the scene was intentionally meant to be absurd or something. They could easily have had the car come out on its right side the shot was fine.

Loved the Wint & Kidd scene. They are always watchable. When i went to the Casino Royale Secret Cinema, I came across two guys dressed in the worst / best cosplay I'd ever seen. They dressed as Wint & Kidd with a ludicrous skull cap / comb-over which was hilariously on point. Lovely to see their legacy preserved.

1: The Davis cameo is relatively harmless, but would’ve seemed a bit out of place in a series which mostly avoids such cameos. Perhaps would’ve worked better with an actor playing a Sammy Davis Jr. type (Danny David Sr. perhaps?). It’s good for setting up more exposition about Willard White/Blofeld, but you easily get the picture without it so it’s just a tad redundant.
2: As you said, I think the scene works better with the mystery. Though I agree that the “tree’s a crowd” line is pretty funny.
3: I would’ve kept it - it’s a fun scene and nice to see more of Plenty O’Toole.
4: Yes, should’ve been kept. Why they felt it unnecessary to show what happened to Plenty, I don’t know.
5: Should’ve been kept. As you said, the crowds are obvious, but they’re obvious throughout that entire sequence.
6: Worked better in the final film - definitely needs to be a lot punchier.

    • @davidjames579

I think the deleted scene of the Mermaid sets up that Plenty is jealous of other women, or very competitive. After nearly losing James to Myrna, she loses him to Tiffany. She will get her revenge, on her terms. I admit it is a very clumsy side-story.

    • @edwardwilson7858

The thing with Plenty is that no one is sure if she's in on the plot. Was she working for somebody who got Plenty to seduce Bond so he'd tell her where the diamonds were? Or just an innocent girl who stumbled into the middle of the plot?

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@edwardwilson7858 The implication is that she hangs around the Casino all the time trying to bag a rich guy [she's hanging around someone else before she moves onto Bond]. She isn't involved in the Diamond plot-or really that necessary to the story- which is probably why her screen time was cut down [TV tropes groups the characters in the film under Allies, Villains, Diamond Smugglers and, for Plenty, 'other'!].

On the one hand, I agree with you that it seems kind of pointless to have scrapped the original shot of the car exiting the alley because of the obvious crowd of onlookers when THE ENTIRE CHASE SCENE is chock full of shots where the crowds are every bit as obvious (not to mention they could have even cut the shot before the corner with the crowds came into view), But on the other hand, the re-done shot with the weird camera tilt has always been one of my favorite moments of the film purely because it just makes no damm sense. "Eagle-eyed observers" my ass, that tilt shot does nothing but draw attention to the continuity problem and makes it impossible for you *not* to notice it. They're lampshading it, turning an accidental mistake into a deliberate bit of absurdist comedy and I am here for it!

I agree, the POT scene* would have helped with character development. The flippant murder of Mr. Tree would have added cruelty, maybe they thought it would make the audience uncomfortable? You can't think of Vegas without the "Rat Pack" of which Sammy Davis was a member, although not sure how popular they were in 1970 (before my time). I wonder if they were just trying to cut back on the number of "pop culture" references, since this Bond seems overloaded with them (Willard Whyte/Howard Hughes, moon landing conspiracy, the mob in Las Vegas, Circus Circus, etc.). I would have kept in the good take of the car stunt, and cut it before we see the crowd on the opposite corner - with a close up of Bond saying "Shimpey Shocking the Poleesh in Lash Vagash."

This was Las Vegas in 1971. Of course this was going to be one of the ‘sleezier’ Bond films. So they may as well have kept in the Sammy Davis cameo and the shot of Connery’s ass. Would they have made the movie better? No. Would they have made it more fun to watch? Absolutely.

The actors are Sammy Davis Jr. and BRUCE CABOT. Bruce Cabot played the character Bert Saxby. They definitely aren't wooden actors especially compared with today's! Maybe in that one scene, but definitely not overall.

I think the first scene with Plenty is better out of the film, mainly because Connery seems half-asleep and I really don’t like the wine moment - makes bond seem petty and pompous - I know he’s supposed to be a connoisseur but I feel he’d act with more grace than that

OHMSS is my favorite Bond film, but I love Diamonds Are Forever also. I like mixing serious films with campy ones. I liked going from campy Moonraker to quite serious For Your Eyes Only. I had hoped Daniel Craig's final film would have jettisoned the story line of Spectre and been a fast paced romp, but that appears not to be the case.

The dinner scene between bond and Plenty O’Toole was rather boring. Sean Connery always look bored and disinterested in this film but none more so than in that scene. Sadly I thought one of the biggest flaws (of which there are many) in this movie is that Connery truly phoned his performance in. You could tell every frame he desired to be anywhere else but here. To have plenty O’Toole in this film just to have more of her on screen is not a good enough reason, there needs to be the purpose for her. I agree that the scene where she sneaks into Bond’s apartment all wet should have been left in. There’s a reason for that scene and it has a specific context.

Often times when films were released back then in the '60s chunks of film were taken out as whether you know they would get comment cards from people in the audience and you know the first week or two of a run you could see a film like a perfect example of that would have been 2001 and earthquake towering inferno those had the scenes taken out of them out of them and lines sticking out them as the film progressed in playback in the film houses it was really weird to see those cuts but you know they got comments from people and I don't know if Nielsen had anything to do with it but it was just weird

@Calvin: I've got a question concerning "The World Is Not Enough": IMDB states the rough cut that was shown in press screenings ran around 160 minutes. That would make for 30 minutes of deleted material. Do you happen to know where this information originates from? Or is it maybe already debunked as incorrect?! Cheers!

While not a deleted scene encapsulated in a special collection of such, there is Also a scene deleted from the trailer.
When Bond goes to unveil Denise Perrier in the pre credits, before Connery walks down the steps, he is seen standing at the top looking at her in the distance.
As for what Should have been deleted: the silly slow walking in 'moon walk' scene, the rolling car with the random space buggy wheel rolling about in the foreground. And yes, as to why they got upset about the crowds and police car for the two wheel section is anybody's guess, one could have cut to a close up of Bond and Case before the crowd and car were in shot...!

Should have kept all the Plenty scenes in. Although Lana Wood isn't the greatest actress, I enjoy watching her on screen and find her really charming. Plus it would avoid the plot hole later on and give her character a bit more of a purpose. I would be interested in seeing the footage of Wint and Kidd confronting her at Tiffany's villa to see how that plays out.
I wish they could somehow incorporate this car through the alley scene as it avoids the weird car flip we see in the final version.
All the other scenes were rightfully cut. Especially the Sammy Davis Jr one.

The crowd in the car chase might have been one reason for the original version of the car tilt to be cut, but personally I think it would've been left in had it not been for the police car. As Bond was being chased by the police in that scene people might've wondered why the car didn't go after Bond.

Regarding the Plenty issue, I wonder if they shot the bit featured here, but then decided it wasn't worth filming anything else [due to time or money], hence why there is no scene available where she meets Wint+ Kidd, but meaning they couldn't use this bit in the movie and hoped people wound't notice the plot hole created by the decision.
