    You guys should know that Desmond Lewellyn was on his way to a book signing when he died in a car crash. So he really did give his life to the fans. I know this because a friend of mine went to that signing and Lewellyn never arrived. Very sad.

    Sophie Marceau takes this movie up a whole level or two. She’s just perfect as Electra, I cannot imagine anyone doing this role better. Maybe that’s why everyone notice Denise Richards to be such a failure in this movie because in comparison to Sophie no one stands a chance

      @@ricardocantoral7672 Every portrayal of Bond by Brosnan is the wimpiest portrayal of Bond ever. From the beginning of Goldeneye, Judy Dench, who I love as M, particularly opposite Craig, basically bitchslaps him constantly. He's so beaten down by Die Another Day. At least Craig's Bond respects but stands up to her.

  • @eabcool
    @eabcool 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    you guys nailed my thoughts exactly on this film. It's good, it could have been great. Halfway through the film it kind of veers off. They wanted to have Bond fall in love with Elektra, but they really revealed her as the villain too early. Too many video-game style action sequences, Richards terribly miscast. Bond killing Elektra should have been the climax of the film, but then there's another boring 10 minutes in the submarine. And then after a film that should have had some emotional impact there's Bond romancing Christmas in the last scene.

      It's like most Bond movies. The films could be really good with some interesting ideas and really good set pieces and villains. Then they sabotage their own movie normally in the second half with bad comedy ideas or the script trying to stick to the formula too much and the movie's become patchy between really good memorable scenes and then let down badly in others. That's the frustrating thing about them. They could be really good movies with more care.

    Wonderful opening sequence. Many reviewers and even fans savaged Brosnan after this was released for trying to make Bond more human. Ironic in the age of Craig. He wanted the next movie to be a serious retooling of "Casino Royale." The producers wanted the overblown 40th anniversary tribute that became Die Another Day. "Casino Royale" was originally written for Brosnan.

That is fine film too... The films like TSWLM, TLD and of course GE I watch every month at least! *** You guys did great review as always! I agree with most of your arguments. Denise Richards is a little weak, but her character is badly written too. The finale in the submarine is OK., better than Carver's ship stuff in previous film. What I really like is the boat chase in the beginning, Q scene and his final words/disappearing, Elektra King as the only female main villain of the franchise, Valentin Zukovsky saves Bond, Bond kills Elektra. So, plenty of good stuff. I wanna watch it now!!!

    I actually found the moment where Q lowers back into his lab to be a sweet, poetic ending for Desmond’s run as Q. He gives Bond advice (acknowledging that he’s told him this in the past), and then has an “escape plan” himself by lowering into the ground. It’s sort of a surprising choice considering they had no idea he’d die in a car crash in the following months. RIP Desmond.

    The World is Not Enough has two problems that hold it back for me: The direction and Denise Richards. Of all the Brosnan era Bond films this is the worst directed. The fact they passed on Peter Jackson for this just baffles me. I feel like Michael Apted picked the least interesting way to tell what could have been Pierce Brosnan's best Bond film. To add insult to injury this film features an actress who can't act playing a nuclear physicist. Sigh. All the other performers are giving their best and Denise Richards is just standing there being so flat and monotone.

    Looking back today, the Brosnan era was weak overall. The 90's was not a good decade for Bond movies. For me, World is Not Enough is the weakest of Bronsan's Bond movies. This is an entirely forgettable movie. The terrorist Renard is wasted here. Electra King is kinda' cool in that we get a female villain for once, but she should have been the sole and only stand-alone villain. This is the movie that made me love Judi Dench as M. (whereas I wasn't keen on a female M. in the two previous films). The climax on the submarine is lackluster and dull. Denise Richards is hilarious, but should a Bond girl be unintentionally funny? But overall, World is Not Enough is a bummer and a letdown. Even Die Another Day is an improvement in my mind, because at least that movie stands out, whereas World is totally boring and forgettable.

    • @ricardocantoral7672
      @ricardocantoral7672 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny, I found Dench in this film to be the least effective in her tenure by placing too much of an emphasis on her motherly emotions. Die Another Day on the other hand is when she really proved herself in my book by treating Bond like a tool instead of a human like the proper head of a spy organization.

    Weak action in the film overall though-agree with you Joe-that skiing scene is definitely the blandest skiing sequence of the series with Brosnan clearly nowhere in sight!
    The story is great,however-rich and deep-I especially love Elektra,who is a fantastic Bond girl/villian and easily the best character in the movie.

      It is-it’s mostly that ski chase and the ending that seems to lack punch to me somehow.
      Joe and Scott were right-the script built up Renard so well as this powerhouse villian who feels no pain that I guess I was hoping for this big epic challenge for Bond and a real classic showdown at the finale...

    The world is not enough I would describe in one word, HEAVY. This is a heavy bond film, heavy on narrative, heavy on action, so heavy that it just has no time to breathe and no time to really incorporate any sense of real direction. Coupled with poor female characters with, I must say, bad acting - it's a narrative mess and it is not a great bond movie. However, I do believe this is Brosnan's best individual performance, but damn his supporting cast/team were amateurs.

    I think The World is Not Enough is such a generic Bond movie that it feels like it was written by an algorithm. I significantly prefer Tomorrow Never Dies because it was more original. However, over the years, TWINE has somewhat increased in value in my eyes because it does make an effort to be a serious Bond film, and it doesn't have as much sci-fi trash, cheesiness, and bombast as Die Another Day. Still, TWINE remains near the bottom of my Bond rankings. In my opinion, TWINE, Moonraker, and Die Another Day are the three worst Bond movies, but TWINE is the best of this trio.

    Boy am I relieved! I thought I was walking into Lockerbie but that was much kinder than expected. I love this film and it's a shame Joe can't get into the spirit of it. (Of course Q has an OP as fuck death machine fishing boat - that's the joke!) The ambiguity of how much Renard tortured Elektra and who turned whom and when they turned, is part of the depth of the film, in my view.
    I'm glad Scott - with whom I usually disagree - pulled up all those lazy Denise Richards-oriented reviews. Truth be told, I think Oscar-winner Halle Berry gives a much more grating performance. I actually liked Richards' nonchalant delivery of " _Yeah but they're usually standing still._ " Berry would have forced so much attitude on the line, she would've stood up in the middle of the greenscreen composite, put her hands on her hips, and made her eyebrow jump 10 feet off her head.
    Sophie Marceau is my Ursula Andress. Seeing a woman with those motivations projected on the screen was a real landmark in my teen years! I rank this film 3rd out of 24.

He fires the first torpedo and the film cuts into a close up before the second torpedo fires and the wrong torpedo fires, its backwards. Bond fires the top one and when it cuts in close and the bottom one has been fired and he fires the top one again. Little detail noticed only because I have watched this one so much, doesn't take away from the enjoyment one little bit.

    Good review!! I actually agree with some of Joe's complaints for once, hahaha. I'm shocked he rated this movie so high considering his rationale for ranking other Bond movies but... it's Joe, Captain Inconsistent ::shoulder shrug:: ha ;-) ... I will go against his suggestion of casting Carrie-Ann Moss though!! That would have been a terrible idea!!! The Matrix had JUST come out earlier that year and THE WORLD was too focused on her being "Trinity from the Matrix" to believe she was now this super sexy Bond Girl level sex symbol. Yea she's attractive but that would have been a disastrous move and EON would have been crucified for it. TWINE would have probably been rated lower that it already is had that happened. Denise Richards was a great choice! As mentioned she was on fire at the time and she looks like a typical Bond Girl (reminds me of Barbra Bach from TSWLM.. not in acting quality but in looks, lol). The main problem with Denise was she was a VERY poorly written character but that's not her fault. I don't know why people keep forgetting how the 90s actually was and what all was going on, lol. It seems that's why Brosnan's films get so much hate because people forgot the social climate of the 90s (or weren't even alive at the time) and compare them to what's going on currently as though these movies aren't 18-25 years old, lol .... Anyway, haha, I agree with Scott though 8/10 and still one of my top level Bond movies.

    Brosnans second Best Bondmovie. Great performance by Brosnans, David Arnolds Best score, a great plot by Wade and Purvis, great casting, great song, original action Scenes, memorable villains.
    Denise Richards is good and she does well with what little Wade and Purvis gave her.
    The climax ombord the submarine is a tad too long but in everything other aspekt this movie succeeds very well. A major improvement over Tomorrow Never Dies and there are no invisible cars anywhere.

    Great review, gentlemen. If not for a few errors and Denise Richards unfortunate casting, this could have been one of the greats - or at least Brosnan's best. I agree with the misuse of Renard (what a wasted opportunity) and especially Scott's apropos praise of Maria Grazia Cucinotta (I loved his pronunciation of her name). Definitely one of the most umm, dynamic? Bond ladies of all time. Oh, and Sophie Marceau is pretty fabulous too. Sorry, Americans tend to mess things up when it comes to Bond. Appreciate the review and can't wait for the next one on a certain stinker we all know and loathe.

    Broadly agree, good start but then fizzles out from about thirty mins in.
    -Renard is a disappointing character.
    -The plot ends up just being about oil rights, which is a let down considering the build up
    -Action slow and clunky.
    -Way too much exposition
    -Snooze fest finale
    Good parts
    -Brosnan is always good
    -Boat chase
    Found this difficult to stay interested in, 5.5/10.

    To start, I've loved this series. Haven't had time to comment. I've agreed and disagreed with both of you over time. I know that this film gets bashed, largely due to Denise Richards, but it's one of my go-to Bond films. Pierce is great, Electra is a great villain. The pre-credits is one of the best. They really tried to do something different here, but fell short. I don't like the ski scene or the helicopter bit. Take those out, focus even more on character development and this would be a gem. First of all there is an element raw anger and viciousness to Brosnan which automatically makes it his best performance, Sophie Marceau was amazing as Elecktra and as the only female villain to date, loved the score and the action setpieces for most part. Denise Richards was outlandish and hard to believe but to me she did not have a significant role which I am glad with

    1999...the year my best mate and I finished secondary education and started A Levels, the year my favourite film of all time The Matrix came out...probably also the year I wound up watching every Bond film I hadn't watched up till that point...building up to the UK TV premiere of TND...and...this...
    ...this...was solid...the Brosnan era is like the Connery era...there are no bad films in it...the opening chase on the Thames was awesome from a '99 perspective(the clampers getting scooshed was perfecto at that moment in time)...the helicopter assault was fun...the twist with Electra was original...and yet...
    ...Garbage have done better tunes...you guys were on the money regarding Reynard...there was a reference to OHMSS/Tracey which...well it's tough enough to buy Dalton as the same guy who's appeared in previous films...for Brosnan to have referenced an event that happened 30 years earlier...er...no...
    This is not a Bond I bothered to rewatch much if at all...generally my least favourite of the Brosnan era
    From a 2020 perspective...The '99-'01 era is my favourite to look back on overall...but a climax at the Millenium dome(to use it's contemporary title) now dates the film significantly. The Electra stuff I appreciate a lot more however.
    Overall...I'll stick with 7/10 here.

    Me being me I gotta comment on the firearm in the movie. I absolutely think the modern James Bond needs a modern gun and I'm glad they carried the P99 over from Tomorrow Never Dies. This movie is my favorite Brosnan Bond movie (Thomas Crown Affair is the best Brosnan movie) but the one scene that grates on me, as a firearm enthusiast is the scene where Bond confronts Zukofsky in the Casino holding Bull at gunpoint. When he holsters that gun, it's like he has an obvious tumor under his arm and it looks so awkward. There are much better ways to conceal a full size gun like that. (Casino Royale handled this in a very realistic manner) that scene bothers me so much that I cant help to think that Brosnan probably never wore a gun unless the scene called for it. David Zarinsky cameo at the end for the win.

Twists like that should never take the teeth out of any villain and that is what happened to Renard (it's a repeat of the twist reveal of Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises). It was nice to see M in a different context. Besides, M has Bond do some personal, unofficial favours in the novels too, like sending Bond to win against Drax at bridge or kill Gonzales who murdered the Havelocks (M was their best man at their wedding). Renard was a wonderfully complex villain. I'm not so sure about humanising a terrorist but it makes for a well rounded character. As for Bond himself, he is never a slave to his emotions here. He catches on pretty quick (at the casino) and then doesn't want to be f*cked around.

      @@curiouscase0075 When M sent Bond after Drax for cheating at Bridge, that wasn't really personal. Drax was in charge of Moonraker and M foresaw a serious PR disaster if the public knew the guy cheated at Bridge. That didn't have too much to do with M's personal life. Now, when M manipulated Bond into killing Von Hammerstein and company that was not some tender exhibition of emotions. That was M being a douchebag. M clearly saw Bond as a tool instead of a surrogate son. Regarding Renard, "She's worth 50 of me". That's the words a man written by a teenage girl.

    • @curiouscase0075
      @curiouscase0075 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ricardocantoral7672Drax was winning huge money and M suspected he was cheating. He wanted to know why a millionaire would care about the winnings. The PR stuff and other embellishments is simply to help convince Bond to go along. But at the core it's just M asking to Bond to see if he can work out how he cheats at a game M is losing at. As for the von Hammerstein assignment, why do you think Bond agreed to it? It clearly meant something to M to see these men killed and goes to great lengths to cover it up for himself and M. He didn't manipulate Bond at all, he was quite clear about what he wanted.
      As for the Renard line, given everything we know about Elektra, her history with Renard and the fact it's Sophie Marceau, it's pretty justified why he says that.
