    FYI. There are laundromats all over Europe. In Asia, you can drop your clothes at a laundry place in the morning and pick them up dry and folded in late afternoon for about $1 for 2 pounds. Same in Africa. European airlines are very strict about weight and size of luggage. Always check with the airlines to make sure your suitcase will be allowed.

    I like the use of pouches in a carry on. A power bank and phone chargers would be part of my MUST HAVE in my personal bag. I don't like opening my carry on until I get to the destination.
    Next time I go on a trip again, I will also bring less clothes especially underwear and socks because those you can easily wash and dry at the hotel.

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for sharing your tips! That is a good idea about washing socks and underwear on the trip. I do the same. My husband usually has a phone charge in his personal bag because our phones are over 4 years old and can't keep a charge well. However we do both try to unplug a little when we travel =)

    • @diviner2347
      @diviner2347 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I must agree with the "unplugging"! Makes the trip much more enjoyable :) before my Europe trip I was thinking about renting a pocket wifi mostly so I could navigate around easier. I'm happy I didn't get to do that cuz I learned how to maximize the use of Google Maps.
      I think it was you who gave the useful tips to "blend in" and be aware of your surroundings. Those are part of the reasons why I didn't wanna have my phone out as much. Otherwise, it'd be a clear giveaway that I'm a tourist who can be easily preyed on.
      Next goal is to wash shirts and pants too (and to "outfit repeat") hehehe.
      I love your videos because they're all so brief and on point compared to a 20min video wasted on blabs.

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, Europe trip sounds amazing! We usually head to tourist information and grab a map at the airport. Pretty old school and you certainly wont blend in if you pull it out in public though. If you stay at an airbnb with a laundry machine you can wash everything. Some other countries have places where you can just drop of a bag of clothes and they will wash it for you. I suppose anything can be washed by hand in a sink though.. Thanks for your reply, I enjoyed reading it =)

      Schillysrh I know right! The struggle is real. I'm going to the States for 4 weeks & only taking carry on (7kg allowance) from NZ plus my oversized purse. I don't mind extra luggage coming back (for all that shopping) but want to minimise being overwhelmed with carting it all as we have a few flights to catch.

    Thoughtfully filmed, thanks. Glad you mentioned the weight of your case - many don't. Please be aware 9kg is too heavy for many international airlines. If your passport /credit cards have electronic chips you should consider a new RFID shielded clutch for the plane.

      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many years ago, in my teens, I went w. my parents and 9 yr.old sister on a ship to Europe. For a 6 week trip I took 22 pairs of shoes, 3 large suitcases, & a big make-up case. I only wore lip gloss so it had other items in it. Can't do that when flying. I don't have so many pairs of shoes now. This trip to Europe in 2 weeks, I am going w. a carry-on suitcase that I will check, and a back-pack. As I am old now probably the biggest need will be meds and supplements!

    No casual shoes, no pants except for loungewear, no q-tips, no journal or anything to write on, not even one aspirin much less anything else, there were SO many things missing, and yes, I am an experienced traveler, and I travel with one carry on. I think this was more about how the suitcase "looked" than how traveling really functions.

      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      +yesiownfrodo Thanks for sharing. I don't take NSAIDS or use Q-tips (or other one-time use products). I brought the pants I was wearing only and I jot notes in my phone. Hi Lisa, you are right. You don't need the packing cubes on the right side. I chose to use them because they are easy to unpack and keep me organized once I arrive at my destination. I don't like to live out of a suitcase and not all budget accomodation provide storage. • @TaraWhiteTalks

      MSM is an abbreviation of methylsulfonylmethane, an organic form of sulfur. It is the form in which sulfur appears in nature in all living organisms, and in which it is biologically active. That and silica are great for hair. I use this one: amzn.to/2liO7rc =)

I’m wondering what would you recommend packing as you actually live in Japan and know better than me. We are going in October-November period. Also if you could suggest places to stay that are not only traditional but goes with the minimal/conscientious lifestyle. Most of suggestions from friends have been hotels that aren’t either. Thanks in advance for your help.

      Thank you so much Annie, that is very kind. I do hope to do a skincare routine video after the holidays.. but until then I can share here because it isn't complicated. I use the toner that I shared in this video: th-cam.com/video/NJKYtJdm2Vw/w-d-xo.html. I cleanse with raw honey (goo.gl/WjOog7) and I have a video coming out on that towards the end of December. I don't moisturize because my toner is moisturizing in and of itself.. but if I ever feel like my skin is dry I will put on a little raw shea butter before bed (goo.gl/vqfbsp). That is it for daily skincare. I still use all the masks in my old video from time to time. I don't have the ingredients I need to make my usual spray deodorant recipe (th-cam.com/video/o4uxXfks3Ck/w-d-xo.html) so I am currently using some natural deodorant I found on iherb (goo.gl/ynoVtj). For my teeth I am using this: goo.gl/rFPTNy. Well I think that covers everything and hopefully I can film a video on this after the new year. Cheers!

    Awesome video! You dress more casually like me, so this would work. For someone who dresses more fancy, it would drive them crazy to bring such little stuff. At times I pack less then my husband. I always make sure our destination has a washer/dryer so I can pack small.

      Hi Donna, I believe you should pack what you love and what defines you - casual or more fancy (your fav mix and max pieces - quality not quantity). I have managed fancy without any problems - see my video showing how I pack 5.8kg (12.7lb) for a month, lol. I agree that washing as you go is key. Happy Travels:)

      With long haul flights I am often on an airplane for 18-22 hours so I find that when I wear the facemask, it prevents me from getting a dry nose or sore throat. I used to always get sick after flying. Face masks are really common in Asia, so I have simply embraced this practice when flying. Thanks for your comment!

    Great video! Did you have any issues taking your makeup in a separate container (as in not following the liquid rule)--I think I saw a mascara? although I'm not sure what kind of liquid makeup you had. Thanks!

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alina, never had an issue with that because my makeup items are so small. I think mascara is the only liquid makeup product I have anyway. However there have been times I didn't put anything in a dedicated ziplock and even then they just hand me a bag as ask me to move it. Especially in Europe the rules seem to be different for each country so it can be hard to keep up! Thanks for the question =)

    Hi Tara! Thank you for the 10% discount code, that is very generous of you!! :D I live in the Nordic region and sometimes it is very hard to get some organic products, because they are either not sold in shops or are very expensive, and many online shops are usa-based and either don't deliver outside of the US or there is a huge shipping cost plus dollar-to-euro conversion, etc, etc.. So your recommendation of the iherb.com is like a gold trove to find! And with the discount it's even better! :D
    Btw, what's your job, are you an air hostess?

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Sorry for the late reply, this comment was hiding in my spam folder for a while. Not sure why! I am actually not an air hostess, I am an English teacher :) Specifically, English as a second language. Most contracts are just a year ;)
      No problem about iHerb! I don't know what I would be doing without that website.. it is my only way to find various items and the prices are so reasonable with the low-cost shipping. By the way, have a look and check if you can find castile soap on iHerb. They do offer it to some countries. One brand is called Dr. Wood's. I think I remember you asking about that ;)

    Nice video :) Just wondering, I've watched a few "packing for long trip in my carry-on" type videos, and people seem to bring razors, tweezers, nail clippers etc a lot. in scandinavia where I live, those things are definitely not allowed to bring on a plane, are the rules different when going from the us to europe?

    • @TaraWhiteTalks
      @TaraWhiteTalks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ziggi Willpower Not sure but I am guessing so. Even within Europe I haven't ever had an issue. I'll take a closer look at signs this time around. The signs in Japan made no mention. Neat. Haha, but by my standards, definitely not minimalist.
    I would just suggest being careful about how many liquids you bring. Even if each is under 100ml, you are often restricted to the airport's standard bag size - one bag per person. If your liquids don't fit in this, you will be asked to dispose of some.
    Also, around Europe I almost always make sure I have a rain jacket or umbrella or both with me.

    Impressive 😀 do you find that packing cubes take up more space or not ? Also, did I miss you packing the bottoms ? Did you take your suitcase in the cabin with you ? Asking because most of the time, I'm only allowed 7kg as hand luggage (and they weigh it!!!). And also, I don't think I've been able to take a razor in the cabin before, although that'd be convenient and really not dangerous.
    Have a great trip, enjoy !!!

      Packing cubes DO take up more space. But they also make it really easy to unpack and stay organized. So it is a give and take. I do take this suitcase in the cabin. I'm flying Qatar and they never weigh our stuff. If they do, I have the canvas bag for that reason ;) Normal razors are generally ok, safety razors aren't allowed.. and no, you didn't miss the bottoms. I am only bring one pair, the ones I am wearing on the plane. I'd be more comfortable bringing two but these are the only casual pants I own at the moment. I don't want to buy something I don't love just fill the void. Maybe I will see a nice pair in England? Thanks for your comment and happy holidays!

      I love my packing cubes! It makes it easy to organize things by type, like Tara does, and also I found you can pack actually more than when you throw stuff around in the suitcase like I used to do. Also the idea of having a spare (light) bag like Tara's canvas bag just in case your carry-on is too heavy is a great idea.

I guess she is not going to hike in the English countryside ;-)
