Hey everyone!! Due to some errors in the editing process, this video exported MUCH darker than I intended so if you'd prefer a brighter version, I've uploaded it (unlisted) here. The video is the exact same - just a smidge brighter: th-cam.com/video/UqW8iUJNqRU/w-d-xo.html Apologies for how dark this one turned out! It looked fine to me in the preview when I was exporting, but I didn't notice how dark it got in certain parts until it was fully uploaded so by then it was too late haha. Since TH-cam doesn't take kindly to videos getting deleted/reposted, I'm leaving this version up for now. Enjoy the brighter version if you watch it!! As always thanks for your support and feedback
That’s totally fair! I appreciate the feedback haha. Honestly the video wasn’t meant to be this dark - I added a filter to make the colours look better but it somehow exported a LOT darker than it looked in the preview and I didn’t notice until it was uploaded and too late 😩 as I mentioned in another comment, if there’s enough interest I may upload a lighter version on my website. It’s just TH-cam hates reuploads so I’m leaving this version up for now. Hope it was helpful to you otherwise though!!
Hi!! Just wanted to let you know I uploaded a brighter version here (unlisted) since TH-cam doesn't take kindly to deleting/reuploading. ME! Question: When you say you bring 2 pairs of pants, does that mean you wear one and pack one? Also, do you just wear a base layer then the mid-layer (fleece or down) or do you wear a shirt over the base layer? Lastly, what eSim do you recommend? THANK YOU.
I’m leaving for a month long trip to Germany in under 3 weeks-my 1st trip abroad! I’ll be based near Nuremberg and I’d love some links from you & others for a parka with hidden pockets like yours. And a Fanny pack type bag. Can I say I’m really nervous!!
Coming from someone who lives in Florida and has NO idea how to pack and lay for winter this video is EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you for being so specific on what you bring even the material advice is game changer for me. You are amazing!
I’m someone who can not stand the feel of merino wool against my skin (doesn’t matter what top brand it is) so I wear the Uniqlo Heatech range you mentioned for that layer on the skin, love them, and always so affordable. I find that bamboo clothes take too long to dry so I don’t take them along when travelling. Thanks for another great video 😊
Oh that’s interesting! I’m glad you found a solution that works for you though. The heat tech stuff is honestly such great value for money! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
You may also like bamboo base layers (although I find these less effective for warmth. Silk is a similar but $$ option). I also find merino a little (or a lot) scratchy but I found a hack where you soak it in vinegar and water 1:1 (instead of fabric softener, after washing) and don't rinse (just dry). Even with rewashing during a long trip I found this was enough to keep me comfortable
@@susie9893 Thanks Susie, 1:1 ratio seems strong and leaving it in, strange, but I’m willing to try! How long do you find you can go before having to do this again? Or is the once enough?
@@megand175 ok, so the website where I read that tip suggested soaking 20-30 mins but I left it a few hours. Then I read another website that suggested putting them in the freezer for 24 hours, so once they were dry (dried naturally, not sure if that makes a difference but I've seen it suggested) I put them in a Ziploc bag in the freezer for that long. Between both those treatments I was ok for an entire 7 weeks away, with hand washing them with hypo-allergenic laundry sheets every 4-5? days while away (sometimes more frequent). So definitely worth a try imo (but if you're super sensitive you'd probably want to test that this works for you before heading out). Good luck 👍
@@megand175 oh, not sure if I was clear - you thoroughly rinse out whatever washing liquid you use to wash them before you dip them in the vinegar solution. You just don't rinse out the vinegar solution. Does that make more sense??
As an American living in Europe for over 10 years, I pretty much recommend my visitors the same things. I pack similar for myself when I travel around European cities in the winter. I like having a colored jacket so my family/group can find me in a dark crowd. 3/4 of people here wear black jackets.
Merino wool is the key to traveling anywhere in any season. Even for city visits to Europe, wear hiking shoes. You will do many miles (kilometers) per day on cobblestones. Bonus is that your ready for an actual hike of which there are many in Europe. We travel for a month at a time in Europe with just a carry on sized backpack and we are in our 70's.
Thanks for a great video and I agree with all your tips and tricks. Fabric is the most important consideration in keeping you warm in winter. Merino wool or cashmere is fabulous, and yes, it is magic. Limiting the number of clothes you bring is also important in keeping your bag light. You did a great job on setting out what and how much clothing you need for a week of travel but didn’t really cover longer trips. I regularly travel for 1-2 months at a time and you don’t need much more than what you mentioned. I would probably add another bottom and one more top, maybe a nice blouse for dinners out. I limit shoes to 3 pairs (snow boots, runners and flats for hotel dinners etc and they double as slippers). A swimsuit for hot tubs and a pair of sunglasses are always essential, even in winter. The other thing you didn’t mention is sink washing. I sink wash my underwear, thermals, tops and even jeans sometimes when I travel. My husband and I use laundrettes every week when travelling but sink washing is easy and everything dries overnight on the heated towel rails in most hotels in Europe. Again, thanks for a great video.
I have watched MANY, MANY packing videos and yours is the first that actually works and is practical. Your list and # of clothing items is perfectly spot on from my own past experience. Btw, RFID security in your wallet/purse is VERY important! Thank you! Great job!
I have a pair of silk thermal leggings. They are super thin but surprisingly warm (considering how thin, but don't compare to merino warmth). I sub these with my merino thermal leggings - try to wear on milder days. And of course, they dry super fast. I also have some bamboo thermals but find these less warm. Comfortable but more like comfy PJs than thermals - work well for moisture wicking and temperature balance but not so much for maintaining body heat. I'd recommend for shoulder season PJs + extra layer if needed. Sometimes I even wear the undershirt as a blouse cos I like the colour and it has a soft sheen that looks nice
lol i'm a polar bear. i get hot really easily. i was in montreal a couple of weeks ago. it was snowing at one point. i was sweating with a mock neck and a medium weight coat. the boots thing though...i get concerned about falling. i was in sneakers in montreal and was fine but there were some icy spots i was a bit concerned about. might have to break in the pair i have and see how they go. really entertaining and helpful video!
hahah I think I might be a polar bear too. I overheat SO quickly, especially when transitioning from outside to inside. I feel like I'm trapped in a sauna lol. Having thinner layers definitely helps with this. And yesss slippy ice is the worst. That's why I always wear boots with good grip, even when they're heavy. Definitely better safe than sorry!
Travelling to London in February with my infant and toddler and your videos make me a lot less anxious. Especially considering how much I tend to overpack with kids. Love your content! Thanks! ❤
As I live in the UK I’ve taken winter breaks in cold European cities many times. The other things to consider are if you don’t want to look like you are on a hiking trip in waterproofs and walking boots. Plus you are best, in my opinion, combining your insulation and outer layers in one coat so you can easily remove it indoors when you go into a warm cafe. I wear: merino long johns (leggings) under jeans or trousers. Thermal socks under lace up leather boots. Merino/thermal long sleeve top. Roll neck chunky jumper/sweater. Ginormous, insulated and water-resistant parka which looks like a sleeping bag with a hood. Scarf, warm gloves, hat. Put 1 or 2 USB charged hand warmers in your pockets. Cross body bag that will do day to night, packed in hand luggage with small rucksack as personal item. Good to go.
Great that you recommended Merino 👌. In future, could you let your viewers know Merino is a breed of Sheep! The BEST Merino Wool is from Australia (Tasmania in particular) and New Zealand. Thank you 😊😊😊❤
I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH!! I was searching everywhere for a video that showed how to pack for winter effectively without checking in a bag. The last time I traveled somewhere cold, I stuffed my bag with sweaters and I didn't love that at all since I was only traveling with a carry on. I went with the Uniqlo heattech for my upcoming trip because I'm allergic to wool--I know so sad 😭 but it's perfect!!! thanks for the suggestion 💗
Thanks for all this info! I have had experience with silk thermal layers and they are honestly amazing. Super thin, comfortable in any weather, lightweight. Just my 2 cents!
Such amazing advice! I wish this came out 2 weeks ago as I was super overwhelmed with this exact topic!! LOL. My next winter to Europe will be a snap. Cheers!
one feedback -- ur video is very knowledgeable and personally i feel the best one. only negative part is the light, whatever u were showing was not visible and also not giving a good feeling about the darkness around.
Great video!!! I am about to travel Europe in December for 3 weeks. Can't wait to use the list and your other tips. Your train traveling video is great but still confused 😅. All packed and ready to see Xmas Market places another great video 🎉. Do you have one on hotels??
Hi thanks for the comment!! I hope you have an amazing trip 🫶 here’s my video showing the process I use to book hotels. Hope it helps! th-cam.com/video/RdXDwoq11Kk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k6qlYIi0G5MLOXXR
Flying to Germany this month (January) and found your video extremely helpful. Problem is I live on a Caribbean island where it's rarely cool enough for closed shoes. Not sure how I'm going to get my boots to Germany and can't buy merino wool here, but will buy merino wool for the future, before moving to Europe. Glad to see you re-edited because I couldn't see any clothes before the jacket.
Thanks for making this great video, appreciate that you considered both ends of the budget! Just a suggestion, could you use a brighter background in future so we can see the products more clearly? Cos a couple of items were dark and didn’t show up as clearly, which is a shame. Hopefully it’s not because my eyes are ageing! Thanks again for all the effort!

This video was helpful on the clothing side of things, but it would’ve been nice to show packing makeup and lotions (both and face) etc with everything. Is there a link where you show what you travel with?
This sounded like a really great video with lots of good advice. Unfortunately it was so dark I could make out very little of what you were showing: black items against a dark sofa in a poorly lit room with lots of shadows. I like Uniqlo as well but I found their packable puffer had too many areas with no down in them so not warm enough for me, I traded up to a Land's End puffer jacket.
I agree with 2 bottoms but I do pleather pants + leggings (or possibly jeggings). Then I like a sweater dress, a shirt dress, and a long jumper (basically I want to at least cover my hips + butt). And of course the thermals + outerwear you suggest (although I take a puffer jacket, not just vest). Accessorise with scarves + hats (this is where I lash out a bit - I have an infinity scarf with a hidden pocket that comes on most of my trips + a blanket scarf + a merino Buff + a beanie [cos I like to wear this for sleeping] and a dressier hat)
Great video. Much needed info. However, dark couch , dark products , dark lighting made me unable to see most of the products . I hope you will consider these in your future videos. I loved your energy ,the vibe , the info , the interaction . Good going . Big hugs
This is a great video but it seems like your room is very dark so the lighting isn’t that great. Perhaps so the video during the day or turn on some lights?

Thanks for sharing. I am confused you didn't pack any additional shoes so I am assuming you only brought the shoes you were wearing? I am trying to master packing for 18 days to Europe in the winter going all over including a Christmas Market River Cruise. Also I workout so I need to pack my workout clothes and gym shoes too. Trying to figure out how to compress a winter jacket. This is Ed's wife Alisha.
I think the key is to be realistic. Are you going to need to work out if you're out sightseeing on foot throughout the day, then doing Christmas markets in the evening? I recently did Canada in the winter and did heaps of walking, hiking, snow-shoeing. I took a pair of snowboots and some foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions or wandering in hotels. It was plenty. (And despite Christmas treats I lost weight on the trip). Although I did take resistance bands and did mini workouts here and there in hotel room. Edit: ah, just read your post again. You're doing a river cruise. Not nearly so active as backpacking 🤔 Have you considered barefoot runners? Or maybe you could do weight training on board instead of treadmill?

Winter summer is my problem. Went to India hot in day freezing at night. They say wear thickest clothes on plane bus train etc but you cant do that in hot climate.❤
@@lbunnygordon1133 You are welcome. If you think the sweater is difficult to get off, a merino cardigan works better and perfect to throw on over your t-shirts. At least it would be something I would do. And on top of that, a light puffer or vest which are also compact and warm
Ugh yeah! I’m so sorry about that. I didn’t notice until it was fully uploaded but the final export came out a lot darker than the preview this time around. Maybe it's the angle of the camera but your suitcase looks much bigger than carry-on luggage, it looks like it should be checked-in luggage ????? Buy regardless, I have enjoyed your video !
Clothing is pretty light and if you're wearing your heaviest items (ie boots) I'm sure you'll be fine. I did 7 weeks in Canada over winter and carryon + personal item
Very useful information, but the lighting is terrible, I couldn't see a thing. Also, the transition thingy where you snap your fingers is kinda silly tbh.
That’s awesome!! This is definitely a generous amount for a week haha (and I would basically do this for 2, 3+ weeks too except with laundry breaks), but I know some people hate rewearing things too much or feel like they need options. I’m glad you’ve found a minimalist strategy that works for you though! :)
I usually just travel with the one pair of boots I show in the video if I’m packing light but there’s definitely room to bring a second lighter pair if you pack efficiently! :)

Great info however, did I miss you packing additional footwear, as I only noticed the heavy boots shown which you were wearing to the Airport? Also, your lighting and furniture is far too dark for videos for viewers - extremely difficult to see you or items being discussed!illustrated!
Extra pair of shoes not necessary. I did 7 weeks in Canada last winter and took snow boots + a pair of foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions, wandering hotels, but mostly cos I was staying with family over Xmas and knew I'd want some indoor shoes. But if I was doing a week-10 days I'd just stick to the boots (unless I knew I'd have to dress up for something) and add in some bed socks

Great that you recommended Merino 👌. In future, could you let your viewers know Merino is a breed of Sheep! The BEST Merino Wool is from Australia (Tasmania in particular) and New Zealand.
Thank you 😊😊😊❤
Thank you very much for the packing tips 🙏
I love 💕 all your videos 👏✨👍
I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH!! I was searching everywhere for a video that showed how to pack for winter effectively without checking in a bag. The last time I traveled somewhere cold, I stuffed my bag with sweaters and I didn't love that at all since I was only traveling with a carry on. I went with the Uniqlo heattech for my upcoming trip because I'm allergic to wool--I know so sad 😭 but it's perfect!!! thanks for the suggestion 💗
I'm gonna breakdown and get some merino wool I keep hearing about it being good 😊
start with some socks (they're the most affordable) and you'll be converted haha. I was honestly shocked the first time I wore them!
Just bear in mind that not all merino fabrics are created equal. Quality can vary widely
I LOVE your channel!!
Thanks for all this info! I have had experience with silk thermal layers and they are honestly amazing. Super thin, comfortable in any weather, lightweight. Just my 2 cents!
Ooh I’d definitely love to try them out!! Do you have a brand you’d recommend?
Also, I really love how you don't over pack. Somehow I always pack like 11 shirts then only wear 3.
Yes, I’d love to know what brands of silk clothing you use as well.
Lived in far colder places than northern Europe. Silk is the way to go. Wearing dirty socks is disgusting, no matter if they smell yet. Not healthy.
I agree but don't find them as warm as merino in extreme cold. But everyone feels the cold differently I find
Your info is always great, thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks so much for watching 🫶
Thanks for watching!! and I totally agree with you. The video wasn't meant to be this dark - it ended up looking a lot darker once I exported it, but I didn't notice until it was too late haha. My apologies!! For those who'd prefer a brighter version, I uploaded one here (unlisted) since TH-cam doesn't take kindly to deleting/reuploading. This version will stay up for now since it's getting recommended by TH-cam at the moment, but the lighter version is here if you need it: th-cam.com/video/UqW8iUJNqRU/w-d-xo.html

@@HappytoWander Thanks you so much for the extra effort!
I can now see many more details in the revised video, and can appreciate how pretty the prints are on your dress!
You’ve made me so much less anxious about travelling for a week with only a carryon suitcase and backpack. Thanks for another excellent video!
Aw yay I’m so glad! That’s how I always travel so I know it’s doable. Safe travels!! 🫶
Such a helpful video! Thank you!
Excellent video! I'm a bit overwhelmed with packing as I'm going to spend 2 weeks in Malaysia (summer) and right after I'm going to London arnd around. So I'll have to pack summer and winter clothes. 😢
Great tips, thank you ❤
When I went to Europe during the winter season all I had other than my outer jacket is all Uniqlo 😅 it works
Good video, but agree with the dim light against a dark background. Also, do you not pack a laptop or iPad?
That’s totally fair! I appreciate the feedback haha. Honestly the video wasn’t meant to be this dark - I added a filter to make the colours look better but it somehow exported a LOT darker than it looked in the preview and I didn’t notice until it was uploaded and too late 😩 as I mentioned in another comment, if there’s enough interest I may upload a lighter version on my website. It’s just TH-cam hates reuploads so I’m leaving this version up for now. Hope it was helpful to you otherwise though!!
And yes I do bring a laptop. It goes in my backpack. I feel like I show it in the video briefly but it might have been easy to miss. I definitely don’t go anywhere without my MacBook haha

This video was helpful on the clothing side of things, but it would’ve been nice to show packing makeup and lotions (both and face) etc with everything. Is there a link where you show what you travel with?
Just remember that winter can be very drying in severe cold so you may need heavier duty moisturisers than you're used to
Very helpful! But you didnt pack a hairbrush, or any makeup or skincare products? Also, no hairdryer?
This sounded like a really great video with lots of good advice. Unfortunately it was so dark I could make out very little of what you were showing: black items against a dark sofa in a poorly lit room with lots of shadows. I like Uniqlo as well but I found their packable puffer had too many areas with no down in them so not warm enough for me, I traded up to a Land's End puffer jacket.
oops, just saw the pinned comment about the brighter version which is definitely better.
Use captions
Hi Christina! Could you please send the link to merino wool socks
Some of us are allergic to wool and/or polyester, so the two options you mentioned are out. 🙁
So i went buying merino wool socks:)
Great video. Much needed info. However, dark couch , dark products , dark lighting made me unable to see most of the products . I hope you will consider these in your future videos.
I loved your energy ,the vibe , the info , the interaction . Good going .
Big hugs
I agree. Would be great if she re-did this video as a try-on, showing outfit options (and we'd actually get to see the items)
I’ll be in Rome in 2 weeks 🙌🏽
Amazing! hope you have a great time :)
how do you do the cute transition? love the name "happy to wander"
Thanks!
This is a great video but it seems like your room is very dark so the lighting isn’t that great. Perhaps so the video during the day or turn on some lights?

Sorrels - Canadian
Not nearly so active as backpacking 🤔
Have you considered barefoot runners? Or maybe you could do weight training on board instead of treadmill?
More lights to see you better

Winter summer is my problem. Went to India hot in day freezing at night. They say wear thickest clothes on plane bus train etc but you cant do that in hot climate.❤
Always pack thin merino in this case. Keeps you warm and packs well without the bulk
@@aspaantonop93 thank you.
@@lbunnygordon1133 You are welcome. If you think the sweater is difficult to get off, a merino cardigan works better and perfect to throw on over your t-shirts. At least it would be something I would do. And on top of that, a light puffer or vest which are also compact and warm
Great info, but your video is a bit dark.
Ugh yeah! I’m so sorry about that. I didn’t notice until it was fully uploaded but the final export came out a lot darker than the preview this time around. Shows me for trying a different set up haha 🙈 if there’s enough interest I can upload a lighter version on my website! TH-cam doesn’t like reuploads much so I’ll be leaving this version up for now. That suitcase would not be accepted as a carry on bag on most international airlines.
Could not t see products. Blacck items against a b lack couch.

Whats the weight of the suitcase fully packed?
Maybe it's the angle of the camera but your suitcase looks much bigger than carry-on luggage, it looks like it should be checked-in luggage ????? Buy regardless, I have enjoyed your video !
How much did all of this weigh? Wanting to know if this level of packing will pass the Ryans Air 20kg weight limit, thanks
Clothing is pretty light and if you're wearing your heaviest items (ie boots) I'm sure you'll be fine. I did 7 weeks in Canada over winter and carryon + personal item
thank u ^_^
Doesnt merino wool itch ???
Not at all! My fav
Very useful information, but the lighting is terrible, I couldn't see a thing. Also, the transition thingy where you snap your fingers is kinda silly tbh.
Your verbal information was great, but the room you filmed in was far too dark and I could hardly see what you were showing.
Do you love that carry on ?
That packing list is for one week?! Im going December-January for the whole 2 months and i'm taking half that amount of stuff 😂
That’s awesome!! This is definitely a generous amount for a week haha (and I would basically do this for 2, 3+ weeks too except with laundry breaks), but I know some people hate rewearing things too much or feel like they need options. I’m glad you’ve found a minimalist strategy that works for you though! :)
The room mood is so dark for a show & tell video. Great tips though, wish I could see the actual items.
Same thought
Merino socks are wool socks
Need shoes also
I usually just travel with the one pair of boots I show in the video if I’m packing light but there’s definitely room to bring a second lighter pair if you pack efficiently! :)
I couldn't see anything to dark backgrounds.
Please invest a couple of hundreds dollars into high-end walking boots (Wanderstiefel) - they'll maintain your feet warm and last for a liffetime. Europeans strictly follow the "onion principle" of wearing different layers of functional clothing to take off if needed I LOVE this channel, please subscribe!
Thanks so much for the input and kind words! 🫶 do you have a particular brand of Wanderstiefel you recommend?
My favorites are Panama Jack with Lammfell lining, which I got from Zalando Outlet for 70€!
@@HappytoWander Yes, I actually do. My most favorite brand to go for is the Swiss based company "Mammut". Currently, I'm owning two pairs of their boots, one of them having a guaranteed insulation until -20c. This is my fifth comment to your video, every one of of them got deleted for whatever reason....
Oh that’s so weird!! No idea why that would happen but I appreciate the persistence and recommendations haha. Thanks so much!
Wow great deal! Thanks so much for the recommendation!
Your background is too dark to see what you are showiny
Nice video, poor light, sorry.
Good video, but your room is so dark we can’t see what you’re holding up.
Dark room, black sofa, black clothes, no light.

Too dark. Black background low lighting and black clothes
