    I've packed using a carry on and personal bag dozens of times for my European trips anywhere from 4-6 weeks. Most of my wardrobe consists of denim bottoms and poly tops. You need to wash tops in a sink and dry overnite. Denim holds up very well with a steam press between wearings. Of course a trip to the laundry once or twice helps.

    Thank you for the packing tips! I’m a big fan of packing cubes, but had been using the rollling method for putting clothes in the cubes. We are planning a 4 week trip to Italy and I’m ONLY taking a regular sized back pack. I am determined! The compressing cube methods for the clothes took me from 2 medium cubes to 2 small cubes with the same amount of clothes. It’s a game changer! So glad I was directed to your video. 🎉

    I'm flying Swissair to Italy next week and requirements are stricter: 15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9" for personal items and 21.5 x 15.7 x 9" (including wheels) for carry-ons. Weight for each cannot exceed 17.63 lbs - half of what you said your bag weighed. Vacuum bags are not ideal if you have to limit your bag's weight.

    I pack in a 24 inch suitcase (check bag) and a suitcase style carry-on backpack…in my backpack I pack all the clothes I don’t want to loose (like my favorite denim, skirts and tops) and everything else goes in my suitcase. Through the years I’ve come to realize 80% of the close I wear are in my backpack and the 20% in my suitcase are the just in case….each country is different…even the cruise lines are different. I thought hard and long if I should continue to carry the extra 20% and I got my answer when visiting Japan and it rained and rained and no matter how waterproof my shoes and coat were they did not always have time to completely dry! The extra pair of shoes, jeans and jacket came in handy!

    I went to the UK for 10 days with 2x shirts, 1x jumper, 1x leggings, 3x underwear, 3x socks (plus what I had on me). I just kept washing by hand and it turns out that I could have gone with even less stuff since the next day everything was dry. If you take solid toiletries (shampoo/soap bar, conditioner, toothpaste tabs), cream deodorant and a couple more things, 16 L is more than enough. So it should be all right for 3 weeks too.

    I use the compression packing cubes when traveling. I still can pack as much as you did in your cubes but with reducing down the space, you probably could have put some of the other stuff from the backpack in as well or know you’ll have some space for souvenirs. Even if you don’t want to compress your clothes in the cube, it would still be like the cubes you used. I also try to fill the voids where the luggage handle is with my shoes, like you I fill them with small items. Depending on what I bring as my personal item, I put my liquids’ bag at the top when the carry on is upright should I need to pull it out especially if traveling internationally as each country may have different rules on how to handle them.

    The airline let you count the large expanded backpack as a personal item? Did it actually fit under the seat? I’m flying to Israel on Lufthansa in October and according to their website your carryon has to weigh about 17.5 pounds and the personal item dimensions are only about the size of a larger purse!! I have travelled a lot with carryon only but USA flights don’t weigh your bags! Great tips!

    • @JoannaWeaver
      @JoannaWeaver  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was allowed and fit under my seat when it was necessary. The Lufthansa limits seem really extreme for an oversea flight. Are you sure it isn’t kilos vs pounds? You might check some Lufthansa travel forums and ask about it there.

    I'm not understanding your video -you said carry on but then said the bag weighed about 35 lbs ( 16 kgs) !!! Did the airline have a weight limit for carry on ?? We are flying Australia to Europe and Singapore airlines only give you a 7 kgs and 1 bag limit for carry on in economy. And that second bag is a definate NO from Sinpore airlines. Are you flying business class ?

    • @JoannaWeaver
      @JoannaWeaver  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You make several good points. Flying within Europe and Asia, the limits are definitely more stringent. Plus, I gave the incorrect weight on my carry-on - it was under 15 kg which is 32 lbs, I believe. When we flew from Athens to Venice, we bought an Italia flight that allowed us one checked bag. But because our Delta premium (not business) flight originated in the US, we were allowed one 15 kg carry-on and a personal bag. We flew They didn’t weigh the personal bag, but it fit under the seat so it wasn’t an issue. And to meet Italia’s 7kg carry-on limit, we shifted heavier items to the checked bag. The carry-on only approach I suggest wouldn’t have been possible had we not flown from the US.

    • @gazrazgazraz4292
      @gazrazgazraz4292 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JoannaWeaver your allowances are more generous than ours. We flew Delta from the US so there weren’t any weight restrictions just the measurements. I misspoke on the weight…it was under 15kg or 32 lbs. Had no issues flying over or back. When we flew athens to Venice, we checked our bags with no issues as the carry-on limit was around 8kg.

    • @JoannaWeaver

      If you are traveling outside of the US, the weight restrictions are much tighter. We had to check our carryon between Athens and Venice for instance. But flying Delta from US to Europe, we were allowed 15 kg for carryons, which is approximately 32 lbs. You definitely want to check your airline baggage limits before you go.
