    Sitting on the shore of lake Ontario sits this incredible abandoned mansion. The property was purchased in 1967 and construction of the home began. At this time, Canada was having celebrations, activities, and events of all kinds across the country to mark the 100th anniversary of confederation. A totem pole was erected on the property as part of these celebrations. This resulted in a heritage impact assessment in 2022 on the totem pole. It was determined that as part of native tradition, once the pole was erected it was to never be repaired or repainted and left to fall to the elements. The home changed ownership on a few occasions, lastly being purchased in 2020 for 4.9 million dollars.
    Since then, the home has sat. The power and water are shut off, and the house is falling into a state of disrepair. With the neighborhood going through a large amount of redevelopment, it looks like this home will be demolished to make way for another modern mansion

    Spent most of my childhood in this home. Many good memories and sad to see its current state. My grandfather designed and had this home built. Norman Goodhead. He purchased that totem pole in British Columbia and had it sent by train to Toronto.

    That is a gorgeous home that should be repaired and lived in. A good architect designed it probably in the sixties or seventies. To destroy it would be a shame. It’s in pretty good shape except for the roof. Thanks for showing!❤

    I think the saddest part of this is the bulldozing instead of dismantling of these older beautiful homes. Think what people could do with all of the high quality materials in this home that are either no longer available or unaffordable for most people wishing to build their own homes. All of that perfectly good incredible woodwork beams masonry, rock work , hardware, tile, windows plumbing that the manufacture of, causes such a negative impact on our environment. It will be bulldozed underground or burned when the majority of it would be happily bought and lovingly used by people who would otherwise be unable to build. The house is beautiful but beautiful homes can be rebuilt, plans can be copied or redrawn. The real tragedy is the waste of the materials at the expense of our environment.

      There are companies that do recoveries before demolition of valuable timber and fittings and its very hard to recover undamaged. There is a glut of mid century stuff in the market. An old house might be charming but inefficient in heating, plumbing and wiring, in almost all cases its cheaper to rebuild than renovate. That house looks super cold and draughts. He mentioned you can hear the wind plus it's super mouldy. No one wants to spend holidays chopping wood for the fireplace...

    That stone wall and fireplace is Canadian Shield Granite split from boulders left behind when the last glaciers melted.
    I’m looking at the exact same stone on my fireplace here in Muskoka. Very common building material in central Ontario.

    Interesting find, as I know the area. Having grown up in the same city. From what I can piece together from the comments of @DawsonCurrie, this home was build in the late 70’s early 80’s, and was owned by a politician from Toronto. Outside of politics Norman Goodhead was a successful businessman and sold his waste disposal firm to a US company for $12.5 million in 1972. He also owned two landfill sites, one of which was the largest in Canada. The home changed hands shortly after his death in 1992. May need to drive by next time in the area.

    The reason that houses like that end up abandoned is there are so few who could afford the upkeep and if you could you probably have different ideas of what they want and where they want to live!

    Nice house but one major issue is in the beginning it looks like the left/right sides of the roof are "flat roof" which is bad! If this house was to be saved the entire roof should be replaced with some kind of sloped steel roof w/large gutters - all to get rain, snow, ice off the roof and away from the house. Otherwise stunning highly customized home w/gorgeous view.

  • @cjohnson4342
    @cjohnson4342 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Usually a flat roof will leak especially when exposed to the elements like the Great Lakes. Such a shame that it wasn't designed with a pitched roof because the house is timeless. I would kill for a kitchen like that

    • @tpolerex7282
      @tpolerex7282 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You only need 1/4”:1’-0” slope - effectively flat - on a low slope roof to get proper drainage but it HAS to be consistent, with no flat spots so it’s usually best to get to 1/2”:1’ slope to make sure. This roof was either improperly designed, constructed or maintained as it is not that difficult to have a flat looking roof that still yields effective drainage.

    I lived in a small mountain community about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles, The Pine Mountain Club. Big dreams and houses for a resort/vacation community that didn’t pan out. We rented up there for a couple of years, 4000 sq ft house for $1500/month. The house next door was 6000 sq ft, huge. The owner just let it go to the bank. It was nice living there, but anyone that had bought was realistically trapped with a money losing house that few would buy. I still have nightmares that I bought a house up there and I new it was a mistake. When I wake up I’m so relieved it was a dream.

I get the dreams you mentioned but mine is finding out years later that some of my university degrees aren't official because I missed modules and have to go back 'school' to finish the modules again with never ending essays and research. I always wake up in a cold sweat! 😅

    Ther is/was a house Very similar to this on Lakeshore Blvd in Oakville, near Coronation Park. I knew the builder, his wife and family. It has been extensively renovated over the years, The home was originally electrically heated, and when hydro went through the roof, the owner installed a woodburning furnace. Unfortunately, he economised on the wood deliveries, and burned pine for several years, resulting in an enormous chimney fire that nearly torched the place. This was back about 50 years ago.

    Wow! Nice find Noah. I had to watch it on the big screen. What a shame that it won’t be restored. Thank you. Stay safe. 💕

    Wonderful job with this house and video.👏👍 Absolutely loved all the stone and woodwork, (that fireplace is amazing), and the wooden spiral staircase.❤ The kitchen was light, bright and airy, and I liked the open concept, and every window was a picture frame🖼 for that awesome scenery. The pool, totem pole, and whatever that area was with the glass doors and heat lamps(?) were icing on the cake!🎂 I just really wish the house👹☻ hadn't tried to kill you guys!👨🏻‍🎤☠💀😱🤯 Thank you so much for this explore, I was positively enraptured! 👏👍❤🇺🇸

    This is an incredible home. I wish i could have something like this. I need more space hahaha. I love the layout. The backyard view is amazing. The lot is just something to die for. It saddens me that it is being left to rot. Another great explore Noah. Big Hugs. 😊😊

    WOAH! That was close. How crazy was that for the ceiling to drop like that. Glad no one was hurt. But yeah, that kitchen is awesome. I love how light it is, the colour of the cupboards/bench tops. Only thing is, I wouldn't have the stove top on the end of the bench like that. I'd prefer it out the way in a safer position. But apart from that, I love it. Love the big windows, all that natural light streaming in. I could almost feel the warmth of the sun on a cold day coming through! That view of the lake is amazing too! Makes me want to move to Canada and own that place haha. Oh, and that fire place... that's insane. So cool. Not a fan of the dark wood flooring, walls etc. I'd change that to a much lighter coloured wood. But over all, a very nice house. I could live there!

    Super cool. But Canada have flat roof? Sweet sorry to see that on go. Think what it cost to build it now.
