  • Scrambled eggs philosophy of building a fun small 54cc saw from a pile of left over parts. Popup piston, Cut cylinder base; muffler mod, new bearings and seals. Also in this video /saw build had to use an Oxy/Acetylene torch, an Atlas Lathe, Epoxy, and Helicoils to finish salvaging this saw.....basic shop skills.
    The point of this video to me is more than just going through and talking about 254's. This is about running into obstacles that many shops would just stop at and tell you to trash the saw...or if many would run into as they play with hobby saws builds, would give up and throw away that saw away. To me working though these issue proves a few things. First is that even with things like chips and broken parts, if they are compromised in areas that don't severely effect function....for a hobby saw?? Use them. Save the wear and tear on your new expensive iron. Second going this "next" level into shop skill really isn't rocket science and is actually fun. A lot of these skills USED to be commonplace with farm folks, motorsports folks, and just the naturally mechanically inclined. The tools are readily available....why not learn them and expand the capability to enhance the saw hobby? Or any other mechanical type interest BTW

    Just what we needed. It's been a while for a video like this. No one else that I've found makes videos like this. Walt, I'd love to see a video buildoff between you and Bob, souping up cheap plastic poulans. I'd love to see what you guys could come up with!

      My main firewood saw (mainly spruce, and fir) is a 359 w/24" bar. You ever do much work or rebuilds on them? Been a great saw for me!

    Love the videos Walt, great to see these old saws live again ,just a one there the ridged washer that goes on directly after the oil pump is it normal for it to be slightly proud of the surface of the oil pump even after its been hit home that's the way mine seems to be after I rebuilt the oil pump and replaced the brass gear ,I've only just done it there now ,more work to do so I've not tried it running yet 👍

    my little 136 runs 13,200 but says it can run 13,500. Looks similar to yours but not as pretty and covered with JB weld. Been going now for over 20 tanks now an only cost me 30 dollars plus the bar and chain an under a hour of time. Compression 155 even. Now it needs a couple rubber av pieces tho which is no biggy. Just waiting on the parts now.

    What is the gap between the ignition magneto and the flywheel must be of a saw Husqvarna 254xp?

    Why did you modify the exhust / muffler ? does it give extra performance ? I enjoyed the video

      It does help on that saw with that particular build.

    Hi there - greetings from Denmark!
    I have a 254 SG - it is super hard to pull when the spark plug is in - is there no decompression valve (cant find any hehe) - what can I do, any advice? =)
    Kind regards

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just run it . It does turn over free with the plug out right? We aren't dealing with a blown up top end is my assumption. I guess I would take off the muffler and check to make sure the top end is good. Assuming it is, run it. Once a little gas/oil mix gets in there things usually loosen up, IF a saw has been sitting for a couple of years, the oil left can almost be like a grease. So running it is the solution.

      @@afleetcommand Thank you for answering! Cool, I will try fueling it up and see how it goes - it has been sitting in a shed for 3-4 years and was given to me by my father in law, he bought it in '88 and he has used it alot. The ignition timing went off a bit and it pulled hard back wich is why he bought a new saw=) Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it!

      @@afleetcommand The piston has like 3 vertical stripes on it, and the cylinder has a few marks, but not alot - do you think I new to replace? =)

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  ปีที่แล้ว

      Might, tough to tell from an online text :) Depends on it if it's a superficial scratch or gouges then also damaged the cylinder as well. Often when they are wore out, removing the aluminum transfer on the cylinder walls & a new piston get them going again. There are aftermarket 254 top ends available I guess as a last resort.

    i seen you and bob talk about the 555 but never the 545. i was wondering if a 555 p/c would fit on a 545.😂

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No because the 555 is in the 562 60cc class chassis and the 545 is in the 550 class chassis.

      Got ya.so i could make it a 550xp?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think so . I have a "dead 550" I plan to do a similar video on when I can get the time. They are analogous to the 555/562 family and similar things apply. I did the 555 vs.562 video going over differences between those two. Or, maybe buried it in one those 562 vids....can't remember.

    • @bradruch9066
      @bradruch9066 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did watch it.i think ya said only difference was the cylinder.maybe thats how its getting the higher rpms?is there any other way i can contact you?thanks

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not certain about stuffers in the crank & ignition/carb differences as with the 555 (No stuffers & different carb/ignition ) than the 562
      And over a forestryforum.com has a PM mechanism that is where I communicate with folks . Better by far than eMail

    I don't see you ever center cranks when you install in the cases?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have done that over and over on the video's when needed. The puller tools I build work to tap on. Some of the saws need tapping almost every time. Others almost never. So I guess if you watch more of the video's, especially 372's lots of crank centering happens. 660's as well but not every time.

    • @TheReal1953
      @TheReal1953 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afleetcommand I just watched your 372 crank install. You're just feeling and eyeballing the crank to center. You say, "You can use feeler gauges if you want to, but....." I would think you want to. Some say the cranks floats anyway in heavy use.....I dunno.

    • @afleetcommand
