    What a great tutorial! I thought it was thrilling to see the results you achieved, fascinating that you can achieve something so creative and unique without photography and using stems and flowers you just collect on a walk and adding colour and effects from things you might happen to have in the kitchen cupboard! Very inspiring and will aim to give this a try. Thank you!

    I only just found this today and have never thought of doing “wet” cyanotypes.
    I have the Jacquard cyanotype chemicals but have never used them. I’ve only used pre-prepared paper.
    I love your experimental approach to printing and I’ve been inspired to take the next step! I was particularly taken by the very first print featured in the gallery of images at the end of your TH-cam video.

      Hi Gill, thank you. I don't use my lamp for wet cyanotypes as they usually work better with a good blast of uv sunlight and need to stay out for at least an hour to get good results. The lamp wattage on mine is only 13w but I only use it for dry cyanotypes using transparency negatives, in this case I will do a test strip first to see what exposure is needed but it is never as long as an hour, usually between 10-20 minutes.

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The effects don't necessarily change in colour or become more pronounced, it tends to be the blue areas that are more concentrated with the chemical, as this is what the oxidation effects. But it is an unpredictable process, thus why I scan or photograph the images during the process to capture the changes.

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said the other colours don't necessarily change....it is a chemical process and the results are entirely dependent on the conditions, the amounts you are using, time outside etc. It will be different for everyone so I can't give a definitive answer.

Question: I've mixed and used the chemicals, but was under the impression that you have to let the paper "set" for at least 24 hours. From you video, it seems like you immediately started working on the paper. Since it's wet cyanotype, maybe it works better that way?

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry I missed your comment Kathy, just seen it. You can dry them but the effect is not the same. You get the reactions by using it wet and you don't have to worry too much about exposure times.

I am struggling to get soap bubbles to expose though, as they seem to pop soon after starting the exposure. Does anyone have any ideas where I am going wrong please?

    • @GlenysGarnett

      Thank you Mary glad you enjoyed it. I usually wet the cling film put plenty of suds on the it and then lay that over the top. I think because that crinkles all the cling film it keeps some of the bubbles contained and you also get some good texture from the crinkles. Hope that helps

      Hi thank you Dorota, no I don't dry the paper, I use it wet which means you can get a reaction from the products you apply. • @freetree9
    @freetree9 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dear Glenys, so cool and brilliant, detailed explanation. May i bother you with some questions.. We did our first steps on this technique with veeeery different results in colours.
    sometimes it is dark blue (just right), sometimes it is softer, and we also managed to have a blank sheet of paper after rinsing. The main problem we are facing is which colour should the paper have until it is finished?.. due to different strong sunlight, we cannot work with "time until finished".. so we thaught about "which colour should the paper have".. jaquard says, "overexposure tends to underexposure".. and we therefore where afraid to keep it in the sun tooo long.
    so the question, after seeing you exposing it to UV light for 15 minutes (!!) is, can we overexpose? furthermore, is it possible that due to us washing it (almost) immediately after exposing, that this might be our issue?.. .. would be great to have your thaughts on this.. Thanks a bunch, take care. best regards,

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay 👍 there is no given colour I can suggest to guide, mainly because you are using the wet process and the results can be unpredictable, and it can depend on how much other stuff you throw on like vinegar which can dilute the chemical. I think you may be underexposing because you need the chemicals to react with everything you are putting on the surface. I have found it hard to overexpose with wet cyanotype and have left them out on occasion for a couple of days.
      My minimum would be at least 1hour to give them a good exposure unless you have really strong sun, you are probably not leaving them long enough. Jacquard instructions will be referring to dry cyanotype and you can overexpose these.

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Francesca, no I just bring them inside and then stick them out again next day. It depends also on how much of the other bits you throw on them. I've found spraying diluted vinegar on them sometimes reduces the amount of dark blue but it is very hit and miss.

    Hello Glenys - thank you for the video - it is really interesting and we have ordered you book - looks challenging and very complete - a lot to learn : small concern : I have a drying problem - when I put the transparant on de sheet with the leaves (or other items : flowers: transparancy) - and after 24h I take the transparancy off but underneath it is not dry yet- I used glossy photograph paper because it is quite strong - I put vinager, salt and other things on the sheet and it gives great results but the print of the flower of leaves of the transparancy is disturbed because it did not dry...thank you for giving me a little advice - could it be that between the sheet and the plastic you leave a air-space for circulation to improve drying? -

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't need to be dry Rita, often it will get condensation on the glass or plastic. You can leave them as long as you want but I tend to leave mine for around 4 hours. You won't get a perfect outline because of the wetness and especially if you put a lot of other stuff on them, it is just the nature of the process. Also certain things will react differently with the chemical so it is often a lot of trial and error.

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Eric. It often depends on amount, baking powder will bleach it white and sprinkling salt gives a nice white mottling effect. Vinegar or acidic reactions will reduce the darkening of the blues but it can vary. Turmeric, paprika etc will be the same as the spice. It's a chemical reaction so it can vary each time. Hope that helps

    I have recently started the wet cyanotype process and love it! I learned a lot from your video and am so glad I came across it. I want to have the option of using a uv light, but I’m having a lot of trouble figuring out what I actually need. I’m in the US, and when I do a search online for uv light, the results are usually small sanitizing lights, nail polish drying lights or black lights. I Don’t think any of those are right for this application. Can you tell me more about the light you purchased? I went to the website you provided a link for, but there isn’t much information or any good images for me to work with to get clues about what I should be looking for. Sorry for the rambling message, but anything you can share to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated.

      Hi...The lamp I got from cyanotype.co.uk uses a UV exposure bulb, so I guess if you can get hold of some of these in the states you should be able to use them. I know some people use tanning lamps but you can leave cyanotypes out even when it is cloudy, though they take longer to expose.

      @@GlenysGarnett thanks Glenys. really enjoyed your video, very informative indeed. I’ve done regular cyanotypes on fabric and paper a few times now. I’ve got my first wet cyanotypes out in today’s sunshine, but have also ordered the UV lamp as this will become something I want to do regularly!
      Thank you

    Great video. On your clip frame does it have to be glass or can it be clear acrylic?

      Hi Juan, there is no problem using acrylic, mine are quite old, so that's why they are glass 👍

    Great informative video! What do you spray on the turmeric powder to get the desired yellow effect? I seem to have missed it in the video. Do you spray the turmeric powder with white vinegar and water or just water?

    Good morning, how much water did you add for both the solutions? I bought these products but it hasn't worked well. My solution remains a vivid yellow. Do you think that's because I added too Much water or because I didn't shake enough? Thanks for your guidance.

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jenn, you don't add any water at all to your chemical solution, just follow the instructions for mixing which is usually equal parts. Your solution when mixed will be a yellowy green and will look this colour when you apply it. Once under UV or sunlight it will go blue. Just paint a bit on a small test piece and put it outside, you will see it change immediately.

      @@GlenysGarnett I know but I bought the Jacquard cyanotype kit. And on the bottles it is said that I need to add water and shake the bottles. So I'm not sure now..

    • @GlenysGarnett
      @GlenysGarnett  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jennguillen6608 I see, I misunderstood you. As long you followed the instructions it should be okay. You then need to mix a small amount from each bottle to make the solution, about 30ml in total will cover about 6 sheets A4.

      @@jennguillen6608 You probably have it down pat by now, but fill each bottle of the Jaquard solutions with water. Shake well and leave for 24 hours. After that pour some ftom each bottle (equal amounts) into a separate container. A little goes a long way. Eg. 1 (one) tablespoon from each bottle.
