In 1980 I had a friend who dropped out of college to follow the Dead full time. His name was Fred so naturally we called him Grateful Fred. The Dead were planning 3 set shows with an acoustic opening set at the Warfield Theater and Radio City Music Hall to celebrate their 15th year together. Owsley made a big batch of liquid acid for the occasion and somehow my friend Fred wound up with 25 bottles, a hundred drops per bottle, each drop around 80 micrograms, totally clean, no speed. I got 5 bottles from Fred for a hundred bucks a bottle. I sold off 300 hits at $5 a piece and kept two bottles for myself. During the Dead's fall tour in the northeast that year I would walk the parking lot before the shows and dose people for barter, weed, food, rides, whatever. Two drops under your tongue and 5 minutes later you were on a clean, colorful trip, lasted 5 or 6 hours, with a soft landing. Don't know where Fred is today, but I'm still grateful he shared that batch with me.
If anyone is feeling encouraged to use psychedelics today, dont. The time of expanding ones consciousness is over it today's world. Enjoy you , and your family without blowing your mind from here to there !

The dude was mellow & humble right to the end. I helped assemble the wall of sound at Roosevelt Stadium back in 70s. He managed it like the precision of the Navy on a battleship or aircraft carrier.. The only 2 ppl who made album mixes that will never be duplicated were Owsley and Hendrix on Electric Ladyland and Axis Bold as Love.. Even with ALL the current modern hardware & software there is NOW, Nothing being produced can even come NEAR to those genius mixes and phase transition configurations done in REAL TIME.

The 60s "movement" gave us herpes not "love" and ultimately Reagan and the me generation. These guys are interesting but they really just wanted to fuck girls and get high. Psychoactive drugs have great value but they need to be used only for those purposes and extremely judiciously. The reality is Stanley and the other "enlightened" fuckers of that time period were just into getting high and were able to get away with being completely irresponsible and lazy due to the economic health of the country during that time. You do that shit now and you're in jail for 20 years or living under a bridge.

He wrote about a terrible gang sexual assualt that was going on at one of the acid parties. He said it was sick and all these fucked up people started joining in.

This man /iconic figure/true legend is by far one of the most important individuals most folks have never heard!!! What he did by taking the initiative and proper steps to make his own batch of LSD, and the influence it had on the 60s generation - I'm having a difficult time to describe just so important it was!! He was one of the few handful of seeds that helped usher in the counterculture. Then he later became the Grateful Dead's manager and created the Wall of Sound for the band!!! Bear should have freaking streets named after him as well as at least 1 statue erected for this great man!!!!!!

Vietnam was on TV everynight from 64-65 to 1973 when a cease fire was agreed upon the USA and North- Vietnam; early Jan. 1973. Then the Vietnam conflict totaly ended when NVA forces completely overan South-Vietnam by May, 1975!
One night we were standing out I the parking lot of a large rock concert smoking a joint and chatting and this guy came running out of the park, across the street, and right up to me. He was just wearing a pair of shorts. The guy puled out a piece of paper from his shorts and handed it to me and said "Here, man, the Narcs are after me and I have to get rid of this. Will you take it?" I said "Sure, okay!" And he ran out onto the beach and disappeared from sight. Well, it turns out it was a sheet of 100 white lightning blotter acid hits. For the next week I turned on a lot of friends for free. That night, and the following week...well, let's just say it was quite the experience! I made a lot of very good new friends that week.
Haji al Kidya - I met some folks from Japan at a show, they had a vial of liquid acid and after dosing themselves (heavy doses) they handed me the bottle so my friend and I dosed. I go to give the bottle back and the guy just smiles and says _”we have more, (looks around), make sure _*_everyone_*_ has a good time”._ I was on another planet for the next few days as I’d dose hundreds of women (I asked of course) and had dosed myself along with each of them ;)

And around 20 minutes into this talk, he starts reflecting on subverting the economy - first the importance of killing the "Black Market" and then he looks at the nature of the surrounding economy - unemployment and Mafia's connection to world's economies - in a way you have probably never heard before ...
I agree. This is a super monologue. I didn't know he was such a mellow, easy-going, modest person. And I really like that he had bigger visions of just making society work better, and making it a better place to have a human life, and that he didn't feel any of the things he had managed to do had lived up to achieving any of those goals. Really nice, and easy to sense what kind of a nice person he was. And as he said, making the psychedelics weren't a goal of his, just a tool to work with and open his mind. He seemed like a nice guy, a bit like Nick Sand.

Well, Bear certainly did have a rough life as he was growing-up and I feel sorry for him. The GD and the Kesey group were his "family." Probably the only "family" he had. He "had his moments," but, genuinely, he was a good soul. May he Rest in Peace. He could be verbally abusive, but, then again, he had a rough life. He will always be a legend. I hope he has finally found peace in his life.
I understand where you're coming from, but he was definitely closer to GD side of things. He wasn't quite a prankster. I always saw him is being in his own little world closer to the Grateful Dead - but not quite fully on with the crew in the later days. And I love that about him, even if it made him a bit lonely. He still always had his family in them, but it says a lot about him that he didn't just go along with whatever just to stick around in the crew after the hiatus. He never backed down from what he thought was right, even for the smallest thing. But he definitely found more fulfillment when he met his wife. And he was at least close with the children born closer to the scene. If anyone hasn't read the interviews in David Gan's book "conversations with the Dead", I highly recommend it. You can also search the ol' archive for a 2 hour excerpt of the audio for that interview. I'm sure it's on here as well. That leaves a remaining 4 hours of audio still unheard. I asked David about releasing it and he said it's up to Bear's family to decide if that gets released.
Have you listened to David Gan's audio interview with him? He talks about the band quite a bit there. There's two hours of it available on youtube right now, some overlap and a bit more in David's book, and then there's about four more hours still unreleased. I would love to hear the rest of it.
And after all that - he died in a car crash a year later.... unbelievable. when you times up. its up. We are all born into this amazing world with an hour glass... and when its done ts done.. There are very few things one can do to add more sand.
Nice to hear Bear's thoughts on things. I took Owsley several times; first LSD I ever had. And he's right, more than one hit was a ride! However, I also had pure LSD which was quite different and quite wondrous and really what the drug is all about. BUT- in the end, it has limited value after the lessons and experiences have been learned. I quit when there was nothing more to gain from it. What I experienced became irrelevant to what I needed in Life. There is much more to learn and experience in Life than what getting/being high can show you. Drugs are an interesting way to open one's points of view but not something one can live on. But thanks for the opportunity to find this out, Bear- I loved your work!

Psychedelics such as LSD serve as eye openers, once the eyes are open then the catalyst becomes moot, redundant and of no further beneficial use. I went on to ayahuasca. After several trips I arrived at the same conclusion about it too.

Even the individual exposed to the largest single overdose of LSD in history, a particular clandestine chemist who had a lab accident thousands of times the scale of Bear’s tale herein of getting splashed in the mouth with liquid crystal, noted that the “lesson” of the entire ordeal was a reminder of the beauty and perfection of the “natural mind”, and how ultimately the farther one travels down the path of illumination through chemical enhancement, the more it becomes an ouroboros, the snake eating its tail, arriving back where we started, where the muse points us back to our natural state being “the way”.
Bear referenced a concept from conversation I once had with him. "...maybe it's just high level craft..." he said. Memories from 1989-1990, New years, his assessment of beadwork I made as "craft, but not art" really stung! But as I see his meaning clearer in this conversation, not a jab, a self-reflection! i think he did make a positive contribution to human life. lsd was a pretty large catalyst to a lot of change. changes that are still relevant and changes that are still happening.

he was a true son of the great creator, he believes he made over 500 grams and started making it before the summer of love. that is a butt load of tripping that was not illegal, and Owsley said it would trip heavy millions of people. Mr. Stanley, I believe, made the widow pane we had in the summer of 1970 on 100 hit cards. one-quarter of one hit was too much for most of mine and my best bud (R.I.P.) Norman's neighborhood friends. John Stonecipher took a quarter hit and ended up outside in the fetal position on the lawn, crying for his mother. Waaaaaa! Typically, it was a 12-hour trip with a fairly quick peak that was so intense you didn't want to be around people. However, my little sister would usually wake up at 3:00 o clock - we always took it at midnight and hung out with us. Since those 100 hits in 1970, I have taken several things that were sold to me as acid. It may be acid, but it is not LSD-25. It is complete crap. Smoke some liquid DM T the other day. It was loco crazy. And fungicide in cattle and livestock feed, and no mushrooms.
I bumped into him once at a Dead show. I was in the taper's section squatting down talking to taper Dan Kirschner at the set break (hey now, Dan!) when I stood up and took a half step back - I had bumped into someone who was swiftly passing by. As I looked over my shoulder at him, I saw a little balding guy bounce off of me and spin 360 degrees perfectly keeping his balance all the while still perfectly moving swiftly in the direction he was going and he never looked back at me as he headed towards the stage (I've read that Bear had years of training in ballet). Dan, who had quickly looked up to see the collision, said: "you know who that is?" I said "no". He said "Bear" and I've been in awe ever since.

Mak Muk That's true. From what I understand, he was on a level of proficiency that was comparable to a professional. Maybe that's just hype they put in the books, I don't know. It is interesting though. I also find it interesting that he was involved with the military's rocket science program. I'm curious if he ever spent any time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in California, as well as if he was acquainted with a man named Jack Parsons. There's no doubt that Owsley was most definitely involved with the MK-Ultra program, and to the extent of being a manufacturer of LSD. The fact that he found himself in prison is testament to how he was double crossed by the CIA, and wound up in trouble with "drug enforcement". I don't think there was any DEA at that time.

It highly doubt it was the meat that caused his throat problem, it was more likely all the dairy he consumed. Many carnivores don´t include dairy for many sound reasons, but to each their own. I´ve been a vegan and a carnivore, and it was the carnivore diet that finally healed every ailment I had: type 2 diabetes, dangerously high blood pressure, plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, skin issues galore, ibs-d and heart problems. My labs have been excellent for the past 6 years as a carnivore (I sometimes have a little cucumber or wild berries in the summer, but my main diet is meat, poultry, fish, eggs and I couldn´t be more grateful to have found the carnivore community.

I did not know the man on any personal level. I would say he was highly intelligent and had a very open mind as far as art, Music and so on. He did help create the wall of sound for the band and was in his words not a chemist but a sound man. I just took some time to look at some of his art work and it was all very cool to me. He apparently made a ll those brass belt buckles you see and the one he is wearing. All I know is that if not for him LSD would have more them likely stopped at Albert Hoffmans door. And if not illegalized in what 1968 or so it would be one of the best medications that people could take without Overdosing like all these kids and people are today with heroin laced with fentanyl and other drugs like Meth and cocaine. We all know the government is still using LSD for mind control and other applications. Now when of if you can find it you have to test it to see what your getting. What a shame. Rest In Peace Bear.

Man he was just taking heroic dosages like it was nothing. When he talked about mixing then all and said it took 4 days to get right it sent shivers down my back, I couldn't even imagine. 12 hrs and I'm ready to take some xanax and sleep
No kidding. I did some good blotters in about 1986 and I could barely handle those. An acid trip was a very powerful thing not to be taken lightly. But at my peak I did take several hits of good acid right from the family, we would take 3 or 4 or the course of a night as we tripped under the jersey boardwalk at night and clear into the next day. I tripped for over 30 hours before and it took 2 days to recover.
Yep. Wall of sound for the "Dead", and another for Bill Graham at his Fillmore West, and a damn good killer system for Ken Kesey's bus. He built me an amp for my guitar that I still have today.
A true pioneer and a real American in the best sense. But let it be just the start. We need to demand access to these substances on a legal and safe grounds. We know so much more about this then before. Let people be informed on how to get into the right set of mind before taking and be in a safe setting to explore what may come. I actually owned a couple of bass cabinets that were featured in the wall of sound back in the 80s. The JBL’s have been pulled out of them, and someone had put a EVM 15B’s in them. They were beautiful, sounded wonderful, but we’re so heavy that I had to sell them off. Didn’t realize what I had… But, made some great memories with them.
Owsley only lived a few Kilometres from me but I never got to meet him.I was invited to a party at his house but I never went as I had to work that night,that is a regret that I have as it would have been a pleasure to meet him.Sadly he died in a car accident on the 12 March 2011.R.I.P

You are 100% right. I healed up from everything the 1st time I took Bears substance at 14 in 1972. Then when I got the Blue cones/pyramids in 1974 I found cosmic consciousness. Haven't got that high to many times but even once but once you 'grok' "I am the I am' it changes lives forever.

@@PostPatriot absolutely incorrect. I love taking 1p-lsd which is almost indiscernible from lsd and I'll be the first to admit even that isnt as good as real acid. There is no trip like true lsd. The only reason these analogues exist is because their superior versions exist already.
I know Bear designed the Grateful Dead's massive speaker monster known as "the wall of sound", but I would not say he invented "the wall of sound" because the wall of sound is a recording production technique pioneered by recording engineer Phil Spector, as I am sure you are aware of. I realize that Bear's monster speaker that the Dead toured with was also called the wall of sound, but it's not the same thing. I don't even know if it matters, after all.
The Wall of Sound sound system was a huge speaker set up which acted as a monitoring system for the band and offered clarity for the projection of the sound by offering sections of the wall to each instrument. Which in turn allowed the band to go LOUD without it being a painful thing. They had extreme clarity. When you've not got every single instrument fighting to make a speaker move, then it can do more. Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" was to record an acoustic guitar track maybe 4 times... 8 times.... And layer the absolute living hell out of everything. That can sound cool, but also it becomes very muddy. So Phil Spector I would say is known for some pretty bad recording techniques. If you check out George Harrison's All Things Must Pass original 1970's mix of the album that's classically the Wall of Sound.... Too many musicians, too much echo. That sound has been undone on a 2020 remix of the album and there's clarity during the entire thing now. Check the two against each other. Phil Spector I think maybe receives too much credit than what he deserves. Phil Spector's Wall of Sound is possibly quite the opposite philosophy to Bear's Wall of Sound as his ideas was to chuck so much at it you'd lose clarity. I think in modern times you can use Phil Spector's ideas and kind of tame them more with modern technology. There's only so much double/quadruple layering that's worth it until you're not creating much of a difference at all. Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood used to do this technique on the early Electric Light Orchestra recordings. But they realised that recording 4 drum kits was the same as one. So why record 4 when one does the job? :)

I got the basic idea, but not the details. I know a little more about Phil Spector and his productions. He was given a lot of credit for basically recording talented people. I think his early work with the Ronette's and the Cyrstal's were a good use of the layering and echo. After a while he just overused the technique and basically ruined the Let it Be album and Harrison's All things must Pass.....not only that but he killed Lana Jean Clarkson.
I've read on the web that the woman he teamed up with was the real brains behind the chemistry operation and that Owsley would pose with chemistry books when people would visit making it look like he knew what he was doing. lol He didn't count on the internet exposing his game! They hired other women to make more and more as it was selling like hotcakes. Owsley was a prolific salesman though and he is fun to listen to.
Yea I've never been a huge fan of him. He's not a traditionally trained chemist and thus doesn't have a great level of knowledge of real chemistry. He knew a couple recipes, that's about it

nice, my first time was in a room with 60 other people all of took it at same time. 25 min on we all spontaneously stood up and had a 60 person hug fest. was crazy looking into peoples open eyes/mind and feeling them in heart instead of mind.
In 1980 I had a friend who dropped out of college to follow the Dead full time. His name was Fred so naturally we called him Grateful Fred. The Dead were planning 3 set shows with an acoustic opening set at the Warfield Theater and Radio City Music Hall to celebrate their 15th year together. Owsley made a big batch of liquid acid for the occasion and somehow my friend Fred wound up with 25 bottles, a hundred drops per bottle, each drop around 80 micrograms, totally clean, no speed. I got 5 bottles from Fred for a hundred bucks a bottle. I sold off 300 hits at $5 a piece and kept two bottles for myself. During the Dead's fall tour in the northeast that year I would walk the parking lot before the shows and dose people for barter, weed, food, rides, whatever. Two drops under your tongue and 5 minutes later you were on a clean, colorful trip, lasted 5 or 6 hours, with a soft landing. Don't know where Fred is today, but I'm still grateful he shared that batch with me.
If anyone is feeling encouraged to use psychedelics today, dont. The time of expanding ones consciousness is over it today's world. Enjoy you , and your family without blowing your mind from here to there !

Psychoactive drugs have great value but they need to be used only for those purposes and extremely judiciously. The reality is Stanley and the other "enlightened" fuckers of that time period were just into getting high and were able to get away with being completely irresponsible and lazy due to the economic health of the country during that time. One night we were standing out I the parking lot of a large rock concert smoking a joint and chatting and this guy came running out of the park, across the street, and right up to me. He was just wearing a pair of shorts. The guy puled out a piece of paper from his shorts and handed it to me and said "Here, man, the Narcs are after me and I have to get rid of this. Will you take it?" I said "Sure, okay!" And he ran out onto the beach and disappeared from sight. Well, it turns out it was a sheet of 100 white lightning blotter acid hits. For the next week I turned on a lot of friends for free. That night, and the following week...well, let's just say it was quite the experience! I made a lot of very good new friends that week.
Haji al Kidya - I met some folks from Japan at a show, they had a vial of liquid acid and after dosing themselves (heavy doses) they handed me the bottle so my friend and I dosed. I go to give the bottle back and the guy just smiles and says _”we have more, (looks around), make sure _*_everyone_*_ has a good time”._ I was on another planet for the next few days as I’d dose hundreds of women (I asked of course) and had dosed myself along with each of them ;)

This is a truly remarkable monologue. There is quite a bit of history unrolled and a whole lot of wisdom presented, both very very clearly. And around 20 minutes into this talk, he starts reflecting on subverting the economy - first the importance of killing the "Black Market" and then he looks at the nature of the surrounding economy - unemployment and Mafia's connection to world's economies - in a way you have probably never heard before ...

I agree. This is a super monologue. I didn't know he was such a mellow, easy-going, modest person. And I really like that he had bigger visions of just making society work better, and making it a better place to have a human life, and that he didn't feel any of the things he had managed to do had lived up to achieving any of those goals. Really nice, and easy to sense what kind of a nice person he was. And as he said, making the psychedelics weren't a goal of his, just a tool to work with and open his mind. He seemed like a nice guy, a bit like Nick Sand.

Well, Bear certainly did have a rough life as he was growing-up and I feel sorry for him. The GD and the Kesey group were his "family." Probably the only "family" he had. He "had his moments," but, genuinely, he was a good soul. May he Rest in Peace. He could be verbally abusive, but, then again, he had a rough life. He will always be a legend. I hope he has finally found peace in his life.

I understand where you're coming from, but he was definitely closer to GD side of things. He wasn't quite a prankster. I always saw him is being in his own little world closer to the Grateful Dead - but not quite fully on with the crew in the later days. And I love that about him, even if it made him a bit lonely. He still always had his family in them, but it says a lot about him that he didn't just go along with whatever just to stick around in the crew after the hiatus. He never backed down from what he thought was right, even for the smallest thing. But he definitely found more fulfillment when he met his wife. And he was at least close with the children born closer to the scene. If anyone hasn't read the interviews in David Gan's book "conversations with the Dead", I highly recommend it. You can also search the ol' archive for a 2 hour excerpt of the audio for that interview. I'm sure it's on here as well. That leaves a remaining 4 hours of audio still unheard. I asked David about releasing it and he said it's up to Bear's family to decide if that gets released.

Have you listened to David Gan's audio interview with him? He talks about the band quite a bit there. There's two hours of it available on youtube right now, some overlap and a bit more in David's book, and then there's about four more hours still unreleased. I would love to hear the rest of it.

Nice to hear Bear's thoughts on things. I took Owsley several times; first LSD I ever had. And he's right, more than one hit was a ride! However, I also had pure LSD which was quite different and quite wondrous and really what the drug is all about. BUT- in the end, it has limited value after the lessons and experiences have been learned. I quit when there was nothing more to gain from it. What I experienced became irrelevant to what I needed in Life. There is much more to learn and experience in Life than what getting/being high can show you. Drugs are an interesting way to open one's points of view but not something one can live on. But thanks for the opportunity to find this out, Bear- I loved your work!

Psychedelics such as LSD serve as eye openers, once the eyes are open then the catalyst becomes moot, redundant and of no further beneficial use. I went on to ayahuasca. After several trips I arrived at the same conclusion about it too.

Even the individual exposed to the largest single overdose of LSD in history, a particular clandestine chemist who had a lab accident thousands of times the scale of Bear’s tale herein of getting splashed in the mouth with liquid crystal, noted that the “lesson” of the entire ordeal was a reminder of the beauty and perfection of the “natural mind”, and how ultimately the farther one travels down the path of illumination through chemical enhancement, the more it becomes an ouroboros, the snake eating its tail, arriving back where we started, where the muse points us back to our natural state being “the way”.

i think he did make a positive contribution to human life. lsd was a pretty large catalyst to a lot of change. changes that are still relevant and changes that are still happening.

he was a true son of the great creator, he believes he made over 500 grams and started making it before the summer of love. that is a butt load of tripping that was not illegal, and Owsley said it would trip heavy millions of people. Mr. Stanley, I believe, made the widow pane we had in the summer of 1970 on 100 hit cards. one-quarter of one hit was too much for most of mine and my best bud (R.I.P.) Norman's
neighborhood friends. John Stonecipher took a quarter hit and ended up outside in the fetal position on the lawn, crying for his mother. Waaaaaa! Typically, it was a 12-hour trip with a fairly quick peak that was so intense you didn't want to be around people. However, my little sister would usually wake up at 3:00 o clock - we always took it at midnight and hung out with us.
Since those 100 hits in 1970, I have taken several things that were sold to me as acid. It may be acid, but it is not LSD-25. It is complete crap. Smoke some liquid DM T the other day. It was loco crazy. And fungicide in cattle and livestock feed, and no mushrooms.
I bumped into him once at a Dead show. I was in the taper's section squatting down talking to taper Dan Kirschner at the set break (hey now, Dan!) when I stood up and took a half step back - I had bumped into someone who was swiftly passing by. As I looked over my shoulder at him, I saw a little balding guy bounce off of me and spin 360 degrees perfectly keeping his balance all the while still perfectly moving swiftly in the direction he was going and he never looked back at me as he headed towards the stage (I've read that Bear had years of training in ballet). Dan, who had quickly looked up to see the collision, said: "you know who that is?" I said "no". He said "Bear" and I've been in awe ever since.

That's true. From what I understand, he was on a level of proficiency that was comparable to a professional. Maybe that's just hype they put in the books, I don't know. It is interesting though.
I also find it interesting that he was involved with the military's rocket science program. I'm curious if he ever spent any time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in California, as well as if he was acquainted with a man named Jack Parsons.
There's no doubt that Owsley was most definitely involved with the MK-Ultra program, and to the extent of being a manufacturer of LSD. The fact that he found himself in prison is testament to how he was double crossed by the CIA, and wound up in trouble with "drug enforcement". I don't think there was any DEA at that time.

It highly doubt it was the meat that caused his throat problem, it was more likely all the dairy he consumed. Many carnivores don´t include dairy for many sound reasons, but to each their own. I´ve been a vegan and a carnivore, and it was the carnivore diet that finally healed every ailment I had: type 2 diabetes, dangerously high blood pressure, plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, skin issues galore, ibs-d and heart problems. My labs have been excellent for the past 6 years as a carnivore (I sometimes have a little cucumber or wild berries in the summer, but my main diet is meat, poultry, fish, eggs and I couldn´t be more grateful to have found the carnivore community.

I did not know the man on any personal level. I would say he was highly intelligent and had a very open mind as far as art, Music and so on. He did help create the wall of sound for the band and was in his words not a chemist but a sound man.
I just took some time to look at some of his art work and it was all very cool to me. He apparently made a ll those brass belt buckles you see and the one he is wearing.
All I know is that if not for him LSD would have more them likely stopped at Albert Hoffmans door. And if not illegalized in what 1968 or so it would be one of the best medications that people could take without Overdosing like all these kids and people are today with heroin laced with fentanyl and other drugs like Meth and cocaine.
We all know the government is still using LSD for mind control and other applications.
Now when of if you can find it you have to test it to see what your getting.

Man he was just taking heroic dosages like it was nothing. When he talked about mixing then all and said it took 4 days to get right it sent shivers down my back, I couldn't even imagine. 12 hrs and I'm ready to take some xanax and sleep
No kidding. I did some good blotters in about 1986 and I could barely handle those. An acid trip was a very powerful thing not to be taken lightly. But at my peak I did take several hits of good acid right from the family, we would take 3 or 4 or the course of a night as we tripped under the jersey boardwalk at night and clear into the next day. I tripped for over 30 hours before and it took 2 days to recover.

I actually owned a couple of bass cabinets that were featured in the wall of sound back in the 80s. The JBL’s have been pulled out of them, and someone had put a EVM 15B’s in them. They were beautiful, sounded wonderful, but we’re so heavy that I had to sell them off. Didn’t realize what I had… But, made some great memories with them.

You are 100% right. I healed up from everything the 1st time I took Bears substance at 14 in 1972. Then when I got the Blue cones/pyramids in 1974 I found cosmic consciousness.

@@PostPatriot absolutely incorrect. I love taking 1p-lsd which is almost indiscernible from lsd and I'll be the first to admit even that isnt as good as real acid. There is no trip like true lsd. The only reason these analogues exist is because their superior versions exist already.
I know Bear designed the Grateful Dead's massive speaker monster known as "the wall of sound", but I would not say he invented "the wall of sound" because the wall of sound is a recording production technique pioneered by recording engineer Phil Spector, as I am sure you are aware of. I realize that Bear's monster speaker that the Dead toured with was also called the wall of sound, but it's not the same thing. I don't even know if it matters, after all.
The Wall of Sound sound system was a huge speaker set up which acted as a monitoring system for the band and offered clarity for the projection of the sound by offering sections of the wall to each instrument. Which in turn allowed the band to go LOUD without it being a painful thing. They had extreme clarity. When you've not got every single instrument fighting to make a speaker move, then it can do more.
Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" was to record an acoustic guitar track maybe 4 times... 8 times.... And layer the absolute living hell out of everything. That can sound cool, but also it becomes very muddy. So Phil Spector I would say is known for some pretty bad recording techniques. If you check out George Harrison's All Things Must Pass original 1970's mix of the album that's classically the Wall of Sound.... Too many musicians, too much echo. That sound has been undone on a 2020 remix of the album and there's clarity during the entire thing now. Check the two against each other. Phil Spector I think maybe receives too much credit than what he deserves. Phil Spector's Wall of Sound is possibly quite the opposite philosophy to Bear's Wall of Sound as his ideas was to chuck so much at it you'd lose clarity.
I think in modern times you can use Phil Spector's ideas and kind of tame them more with modern technology. There's only so much double/quadruple layering that's worth it until you're not creating much of a difference at all. Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood used to do this technique on the early Electric Light Orchestra recordings. But they realised that recording 4 drum kits was the same as one. So why record 4 when one does the job? :)

I know a little more about Phil Spector and his productions. He was given a lot of credit for basically recording talented people. I think his early work with the Ronette's and the Cyrstal's were a good use of the layering and echo. After a while he just overused the technique and basically ruined the Let it Be album and Harrison's All things must Pass.....not only that but he killed Lana Jean Clarkson.

I've read on the web that the woman he teamed up with was the real brains behind the chemistry operation and that Owsley would pose with chemistry books when people would visit making it look like he knew what he was doing. lol He didn't count on the internet exposing his game! They hired other women to make more and more as it was selling like hotcakes.
Owsley was a prolific salesman though and he is fun to listen to.
Yea I've never been a huge fan of him. He's not a traditionally trained chemist and thus doesn't have a great level of knowledge of real chemistry. He knew a couple recipes, that's about it
