Revealing the Mind: The Promise of Psychedelics

  • Nearly every culture throughout history has used chemicals that alter consciousness for spiritual exploration. In the 20th century these drugs caught the attention of scientists. Psychedelics, as they were named, proved effective at treating intractable illnesses like depression and addiction. And they became a tool for studying the mind, opening “the doors of perception,” as Aldous Huxley wrote. But those doors slammed shut when President Nixon declared psychedelics dangerous and medically useless. Join scientists and “psychonauts” who are now picking up where research left off 50 years ago, experimenting with LSD, psilocybin, DMT and other psychedelics to heal-and reveal-the mind.

    I was very depressed and angry at the world before I tried mushrooms. I cried while eating fruit, just seeing how beautiful it was and how it was nourishing me was amazing. I took acid and mushrooms at a festival that I went to by myself, I started to trip BAD and somehow made it back to my hotel safe and sound and I cried harder than I ever have. Something released in me that night. I was connected to myself. I needed that trip so badly. Since then, I haven’t been angry and I love so much deeper. I’m finally happy. I’m now growing my own mushrooms. Fuck the government, this shit is healing.

    Psychedelics tend to fix problems at their core, unlike modern medicine which tries to fix the symptoms.
    This is why psychedelics work great for depression, addiction etc..

    • @333rdAlchemist
      @333rdAlchemist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      S C couldn’t agree more, Ive use/used intermittent low doses of LSD & mushrooms to treat clinical depression, anxiety & substance abuse issues over the span of 3 years. The process of successfully overcoming deeply rooted psychological issues goes pretty much how you described, there is no sudden relief without deliberate unpacking, articulation & organization of why I was suffering from the issues I had/have. If I had only ever tripped once or even tripped as many times as I have without deliberate process I’m sure I’d still be suffering. I still occasionally battle with anxiety but that is usually the result of me doing things that are bad for my physical and mental health like binge eating junk food and not going to the gym. I took SSRIs for years & I only sunk deeper into my self created pool of shit. There is no “woo” but calculated intermittent psychedelic use coupled with exercise, a personalized diet plan and goals work wonders to change ones life

      @S C yea, I find it hard to believe that a little LSD cures boozers and ppl with depression...that makes no sense to me...maybe temporary on the depression...maybe.

    • @2CSST2
      @2CSST2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @S C You make some fair points but you should calm the fuck down with the arrogant attitude. Did you have some repressed frustration and need to call someone on speaking woo woo? Because that definitely seems to be the best explanation to me. Especially that, the guy HASN'T spoken any "woo woo". Do you actually know what the term means? Exactly what new age words or expressions has he used? There's none, litterally fucking none. Treating symptoms rather than the cause, medicine, depression, addiciton, none of those terms have ANY new age connotation whatsoever, NONE.
      So that's one thing, another thing is the actual disagreement with the statement you have (which has nothing to do with any woo woo) is by itself not warranted. You say no one understands fully depression, yet you act like you yourself understands fully how modern medicine works. Are you REALLY, seriously, claiming that no doctor has ever prescribed something that only lowers the symptoms but doesn't correct the core of a problem? And at the same time, act like you're the rational scientific minded person? That's just mind boggling to me.
      Yes, "WHEN" a cause is understood and a demonstrably effective technique or medicine is available that's what is done, but the keyword is WHEN. A lot of doctors AREN'T always bothered to investigate for the root of the problem. Health isn't as fucking simple as either the cause is "known" or "unknown". Most of the time you have to look for it, connect dots, etc. But it's way more simple to just prescribe a drug that lowers the symptoms, which is why this happens often.
      Now in the case of psylocibin, the very nature of the experiences it gives DOES bring to focus closer to the actual cause rather than the symptoms. That doesn't fucking mean you just have t take it and boom magically everything works out, but the thing is... NO ONE EVEN SAID THAT... IDIOT.

      And this is why they are indeed for everyone. Everyone who believes to be free of childhood trauma will be surprised what 3-7 lsd-ketamine trips will uncover. Without exception. Never an irresponsible amount. People that do too much and have their knowledge base cemented around some religious insanity will just come out of it with an even more rediculous theory. They are a lot happier and more calm afterwards, but its still stilly to hear what "their type" has to say. I took it for a month to binge learn artificial intelligence, and it helped get through it with just a couple hitches, but overall I got through all the info better off than I would have without it. Yes, it helps with depression and existentiality in a way that I cannot begin to explain. Especially if you turn on Cosmos, or load up some "trippy youtube videos" or some funny stuff. Never take more than you are comfortable with at the time, always do it in a comfortable environment and not around retarded ass parents, etc. If someone tries to convince you of something weird or crazy while on it you can just think about it logically and provide counter-arguments, if your mind works that way normally. If you are highly suggestible and gullible as a person, I don't recommend you take a full dose or higher.

    I entered college in a major I grew to hate, tip-toed on the borderline of expulsion/academic probation, and rapidly developed an unhealthy lifestyle filled with drugs (and the dealing of them), alcohol, and careless behavior. Naturally I soon found myself in a deep state of depression. Decided to take 2 tabs of LSD and hike a nearby mountainous trail in the Appalachia. I sat up on the mountain while peaking and watched an entire thunderstorm pass through the valley while I sat in the sun. Tears burst out of my eyes and I remained staring out contemplating my entire life and who I truly was. I realized how much time I had wasted looking at the world through other's expectations and feeling forced to fit a cookie-cutter template of a human-being. Realized how many facets of my life I had sacrificed all for the sake of "what It might look like" or "how cool with these people think I am?".
    The next day I quit cigarettes, quit my involvement with drugs, switched majors to something I found remotely interesting (biology apparently). Fast-forward 6 years. I'll be graduating medical school in

    In the United States, we need to start establishing spiritual centers that people can go to safely take psychedelics like Ayahuasca or Psilocybin. Eventually, it should become something similar to a rite of passage for people graduating from high school or college to be able to take it before entering the workforce or government if they wish to. (for people with psychosis in their family, perhaps they could have their own separate protocols) If done right, such as with side-support programs and a focus on improving harmony, this could really help us become more empathetic as a population and reshape society in a positive way.

    Psychedelics changed my life. I had been trying to get clean for years. I was addicted to fentanyl and on a 9 year run. I tripped towards the end of my final detox. It wAs intentional because I had a feeling it would open my mind to what I am truly capable of, if I could release and change the wiring of my brain. It worked. I had a profound experience where my angels told me I could get through the sickness and that if I did, I would have an incredible life. I currently take mushrooms and have never been more productive, happier or healthier. Not just because of the mushrooms, obviously, but tripping was the finalization in changing my mindset forever. I absolutely love this talk and the conversations it opens. I’m currently studying neuroscience as a degree and it’s psychedelics that really triggered my interest. Taking LSD was such a profound experience, the hyperconnectivity allowed me to view myself and my relationship to myself and others in a way I had never imagined possible. Beautiful and intense, though I must say irreversible effects. Which I mention because those kind of realisations should not be taken lightly, changing perception of yourself drastically fundamentally changes your personality at a neural level.
    I was young, 16 when I took LSD which maybe explains why it affected me so much but the power of psychedelics is undoubtable in my mind.
    I was also a firm atheist but my trip really questioned my beliefs. To this day, the supreme love and oneness i felt leads me to believe in something akin to god.
    This is just my story but wow I loved this. Hopefully I can study it further and in my lifetime see these substances decriminalised/ used as treatment.
    Am keen to try them again but I want to wait until my brain is fully developed.

    Carl Jung talks about becoming a child again while in adult form. Not in a going backwards sense, but to renew the mind in a way to see the world in a more fulfilling way. Psilocybin opened up my mind and instantly made me feel like a 5 year old (literally I was in the forest), running around enjoying nature and the world for the first time with new eyes so to speak. I felt so at peace with the world around me and it was truly eye opening. They say that a psychedelic experience has been known to be one of the most profound moments in ones life. Akin to a birth of your child, wedding day, etc. I fully believe this. I will close with my opinion that in order to truly experience psilocybin, don’t sit and watch tv, but get out in nature. Watch a sunset or lay in the grass and watch the clouds roll by. It’s an amazing experience but needs your respect.

What I experienced forced me to face demons, God revealed himself to me, and I healed deep seated traumas that counseling and meds couldn't touch. @Mr Phillips Great question. The simple answer is that we don't know. I have a background in the hard sciences, and the skeptic in me rejects the notion that any of this is real. However, what is real? Your own perception? Your subjective experience of an event? I do not know if you actually meet someone, and it's definitely not unicorns and bigfoot haha. Although, that's a common misconception so I don't blame you. What you meet in the realm of DMT gives you a glimpse in to a conceivable infinite. I am an atheist, even after having tripped on all of the classical psychedelics numerous times. Despite this, what I experience tripping on DMT makes my every day life feel like a poor imitation of reality. This is an unshakable feeling that I will never be able to get over. What I am trying to say in a round about way, is that if it's in line with your personal world view, you will likely believe that these entities are real, and not the physical manifestations of your subconscious. This is not a position I will ever mock or judge because I 100% understand why one would think so. Apologies if I'm doing a poor job of trying to explain this to you. Trying to describe psychedelics to someone who has never done them is as hard as describing colour to a blind person. If you want to understand this for yourself, and you want an answer you will be able to comprehend, do some DMT. It isn't dangerous, and you definitely can't be addicted to it. You may just find it changes your life in ways that you could never otherwise comprehend.

    • @Adam-tp8py
      @Adam-tp8py 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Mr Phillips It's currently suspected that NDEs are fuelled by DMT...Try searching the deep web to find some. Reddit should help. I won't say more.

      @@Adam-tp8py after 20 years i see this perceived reality , the 5 sense feedbackloop as cross section through infinity. After seeing the hologram change and seeing both sides of the plane that divides this reality from all there is ... i agree , this reality feels absurd. The whole idea of reality seems preposterous .... yet there is nothing which could feel more real and more profound than life itself. I no longer believe in a seperation of realities.
      I once rode the mechanical worm through hyperspace on ketamine. I realized this worm is me. Its not a worm ofcourse. It appears to be an existence bubble casting into past towards the future and the now we construct with our 5 senses is the crossection of our limited perception. Literally and figuratively.
      We are the universe finding out what it this and who we are. We are not humans in this universe, we are the universe in human form.

He said how all humans are looking for "closure" in life, music, activities, love, friends, art, sleep, waking, every moment is built around this sense of need for closure or need to know more. Not sure why this response popped into my head but the way you are explaining it here, saying how the brain lights up in different areas when we are thinking of certain things, or completing certain tasks; it reminded me of the brain looking for essential CLOSURE in all those regions of the brain. Just a thought :)

    It would make sense that there would be an almost chemical disabling of your fight or flight response, and a breaking through that to the core of things. Humans are excellent at building emotional walls. Sometimes they’re protective, but ultimately destructive when you shift into a denial. It is really like learning to master your mind instead of just compartmentalization, and the appearance of control. I think this may be more essential now than ever before. Our brains are being monopolized by all of this external input.

    Mushrooms changed the way I look at everything . I haven't done any in 3 decades but they left a lasting impression on me. I wish everybody on earth could do psilocybin at the same time. I believe it would change the course of humanity. In a good way.

      @@lisacowell9193 from what I’ve gathered over time, so called ‘bad trips’ happen when you try to take control in a trip and failing at it. If you don’t have major trauma or anxiety the chances for a bad trip are small. But if you feel like you’re getting scared during a trip, try to remember to let go, your mind is trying to tell something important. Just ride the wave and you will be ok.

    In 2017 I departed Christianity as a Senior Pastor largely due to the results shared by Dr. Roland Griffiths from John’s Hopkins University. Why? Because I realized the healing power I was seeking in organized Christianity is being accessed through these allies. I’m so grateful for this work and conversations like this.

    This is amazing. I'm a huge fan of psychedelics, as psilocybin has cured me of my ptsd. If we don't learn all we can from the Amazonian native ppl and shaman's then soon all that knowledge will be lost. This is very important that we gain all knowledge we can from studying psychedelics as they truly have the ability to not only heal many areas of the brain but also to re-wire the brain to think more effectively. I've also noticed this in myself. There are many uses, i also no longer have my life long depression and anxiety due to micro-dosing psychedelics as well as macro doses. But i have a fuller awareness and appreciation for nature, animals and others. Referring to magic/medicinal mushrooms, Paul Stamets (mycologist) says, mushrooms can save the World. He is right, we just have to listen.

Psilocybin has saved my life honestly I microdose and macro lol as Well . I see so many benefits it can have and just how many people it can help. I love to hear stories of how it's helped others thanls

      Psychedelics are the reason why i didn’t take my life when i was at my end. I was stripped of my ego and saw the beauty of life and interconnectivity and even though i still battle anxiety and depression, I’m doing better everyday and will never think in such a self destructive way again.

      LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself
      This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."

    👽I don't know about it teaching me much, but I was always very curious from the day I was born. But what it did teach me was, to be more tolerant of others opinions. You believe that your right, but it's really just the path you chose. You have to trip to realize that you have always been tripping. The only way to do anything is to do the work. But that doesn't mean sometimes medicine doesn't do the work. Anyone who is watching this channel, should know that the mind works on association. That's how you remember most of what you hear or see. (Mnemonic device, Peg system and Loci) I loved Brian's story about his high fever and every other story of his.👽

    Remember that you don’t attract what you want, you attract who you are. So focus on love. Focus on happiness. Focus on feeling fulfilled and like you already have everything you’ve ever wanted. Focus on gratitude. You are a powerful source of energy. When you do this, you will get what you want because you are in alignment and focusing on all you have instead of a lack. Just know you have everything you have ever wanted. It’s already yours . Be joyful! Sending loving energy to you all. ❤️
