  • Michael Pollan's new book "How To Change Your Mind" surveys the highly controversial terrain of the renaissance of both the science and popular usage of psychedelic substances. As one of our most brilliant and clear-eyed explorers of such topics as plant intelligence and how we feed ourselves, Michael will share his luminous insights from what began as investigative reportage and became a very personal interior journey into the mystery of consciousness and the nature of spirituality.
Read an excerpt from Michael Pollan's book, How To Change Your Mind, at bioneers.org/how-to-change-yo...
This keynote talk was delivered at the 2018 National Bioneers Conference.
Introduction by Kenny Ausubel, Bioneers Co-Founder and CEO.
Bio: Michael Pollan, a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine since 1987, Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and Director of the Knight Program in Science and Environmental Journalism, is one of the nation's most influential writers and scientific and environmental investigative journalists. His many award-winning, best-selling books include: The Botany of Desire; The Omnivore's Dilemma; In Defense of Food; and, most recently, How to Change Your Mind.

I have been depressed for a long time, but after taking shrooms few months ago, l feel much happier and highly motivated and my ADHD gone , lost a ton of anxiousness and had a few epiphanies about how I should live my life. I decided to buy an ounce for backup, but haven’t yet felt the need to take any more since then.

I could remember several years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD. Also suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my mom recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. I hate that psilocybin gets grouped with drugs like cocaine and heroin. Mushrooms are a remedy, not a vice! I went on a microdose treatment for a couple of months and within the first week, every sight of a cigarette got me questioning why I was doing all that to myself. It really works.

childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

Psychedelics in general have done what hundreds of hours of PTSD therapy couldn't. I went from being on 31 pill daily for mental states to 0 over the course of 13 weeks. Like everything in the world.
It's not for everyone and experiences will certainly vary. Me and my friends approached it from a lens of healing and learning and it's exactly what we got out of it.

The one time I had a bad trip, ended up being a great learning experience. I took some shrooms, called ALL of my friends. They sounded excited when I told them I was on shrooms. Inevitably they would ask if they came over they could have some. I didn't have any extra, then they would say, "Oh I can't trip sit with you I'm busy". This hit me deep in the feels, causing a bad trip. So I asked myself why I had sooooo many shitty "friends". The answer? "You're a druggy and so are they. You're pretty shitty too.
You're a loser. Move away from your toxic home town and stop doing drugs". Felt excited and happy after getting this answer. I moved that same week. Best decision of my life.

People with depression proceed with caution.
I suffered from extreme depression and ptsd from a accident that left me burned and disfigured.
I struggled with depression for years but never suicidal.
I tried a mushroom trip as a last resort to cure my depression and what happened scared me!
The trip made me comfortable with the thought of death. Almost made me think that suicide wouldn’t be so bad, it’s ok to die.
These thoughts scared me to no end!
I didn’t have these thoughts before the trip.
Luckily I spoke with my wife throughout this process and together we worked it out.
Later on a tried micro dosing which ultimately I believed truly helped me.
The micro dosing made me more open and I was able to lay it all out and work thru things with my wife to help guide me.
So just a word of caution.
And please let your loved ones know what you are doing so they can offer help if needed.

I was once worried that I might be a psychopath. I told this to my counselor and she said, "I definitely know you're not a psychopath." I asked her how she knew. "A psychopath wouldn't be worried about it. A psychopath wouldn't care." I dont know if that conveys what I'm trying to say, but what I'm getting at is perhaps being scared of being ok with suicide is a good thing... depression is like a living death and a lot of our thoughts while depressed are like being ok with dying like that. So perhaps that is the lesson. Well...I think I really shit the bed on that one and i dont think what I said makes any sense, but I hope you know what I mean. Being scared of beingnok with death is like being afraid of death which, for a person with a wonderful wife etc is a good thing. Kicks your ass into appreciating life.

I've only smoked herbs and drank beer in moderation. Now at 70 I look back and see my growth as a human who wants to be kind as I would enjoy others kindness. I tried psychedelics in the form of shrooms also with some really strong weed and alcohol together. And needless to say the trip itself did not go well. However I think it was the catalyst to coming out a changed man. Afterwards i realized I was a very unhappy individual and there was a lot of dark shit buried deep within my sub-conscience. Things ive always thought if i said or expressed out loud people would hate me. My one friend who was with me while i was tripping out stood by me and to this day is probably my closest friend. Needless to say, ive come out a changed man. In 3 months I’ve eliminated all of my people-pleasing tendencies, ive sought professional help for something that happened to me in my childhood, started a new career, I even started dating. I probably won’t go out of my way to try it again but that experience has made a lot of things that i thought were impossible, VERY easy today.

Mushrooms are meant to be taken with respect. Mixing a dirty addictive drug with it like alcohol defeats the entire purpose. Making your experience not as beneficial. Psilocybin demands respect or else it will not respect you.

I can relate because my first microdose did not go well. I, too, attribute it likely to be the result of having too much "stuff" in my past that I lug around every day. Ego is what generates fear. Once ego is dissolved there's no fear anymore.

About 10 minutes later a carpet of all black inscts, spider like, entered the room and crawled towards me. Terrifying. I knew it was a hallucination but could do nothing to stop it. I could not utter any sound.Paralised with fear.

I don't believe a trip can clinically 'cure' anything to be honest. When you have scientific evidence besides some random fMRI scan of the same single brain on acid.
BTW feeling sad isn't the same as depression, if you didn't know that already. If you go to a psychiatrist or doctor and he gives you a diagnosis, you can call tell me you suffered from a major depressive disorder.
Depression is a lifelong illness, if you've had 3 depressive episodes, the chance of having a next one in the near or further future is almost certain.

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself.
This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.

I think these tools are amazing. When I first tripped on mushrooms I was very anxious and started to get the sweats as you do. Then all of a sudden I felt powerful jolts of joy and love running through me all throughout my body, I then felt guilty that I felt soooo good and wished the same for everyone. After this I cried with happiness for a while, as if my body needed to release built up tension through crying which then put me at massive ease. Later when things were starting to wear off I had this urge to text my friends and family and connect with people to share the love. Such a fascinating substance, and I believe the mushrooms give you what you need not what you want. I feel it left me a stronger person mentally.

I have bi polar disorder, and I've been mircodosing mushrooms for the last month. 1 day on 2 days off. My life has never been better. It all seems possible. I was kinda sketched out taking it the first time, but it was just a mood enhancer. Psychedelics are literally life-saving, and it's sad that we haven't studied this enough for people with mood disorders.

Some truffles came through the post a few months ago. Shared half with a friend so it was a small dose but still felt something. No intense visuals but I felt some mystical awareness and noticing the way the guitars were propped up at an angle making me think of pyramids from ancient times. My friend said He felt stoned although we were smoking a bit of weed too. Can't wait for the next trip hopefully, it will make lockdown thought as if everything is just fine and humanity's future is gonna be just fine.❤

Love the story so much, first time i got the balls to try it i turned into a blue macaw made of ginger bread and flew through an endless palace made of clear crystal and flew through the refracting rainbow light rays. All while being bundled in a blanket. Keep in mind im claustrophobic to the point where i cant hug for more than 5 seconds. I woke up the next day and could function in small spaces. Not perfectly, still get freaked out but i dont panic instantly. Much happy 😊
