Take it from me, a 3 time dog owner who currently has a 1 yr old border collie:
DO NOT get this breed unless you are prepared to keep it entertained ALL DAY!! They need constant attention and are not good with/for other dogs/elderly people/small kids. For example took mime hiking for 4 hours the other day and when we got home he still wanted to play ball (and did) until dinner time!!

I am ready to own this breed

    • @isabellac4901
      @isabellac4901 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@fixyourmind exactly, people adopt border collies because they're the cute dogs from Milkbone commercials. Or, conversely, because they're labeled as a high energy breed and they think high energy means wanting to play just slightly longer than their lapdog that sleeps all day and only plays for 20 minutes😂 Which is fine we love our lapdogs, but you can't expect a bigger lapdog from this breed. It thrives on activity and pleasing its owner, whether that seems to be fethcing a ball 1000 times or actually herding some sheep. And people just don't understand what they're getting when they adopt one.

American Akitas don't shed too much, that is just not true. They shed twice a year very much, but that's it. Also they are very intelligent dogs and learn really fast. If you are consistent in training them (mentally and physically) there are nearly no problems. Also I hate when people say, that there are breeds not suiting for beginners. If you are willing to learn what a dog needs, what they are thinking and what the individual breed stands for, you are willing to visit a dog school etc., it nearly won't matter what kind of dog you pick as your first one. I own an American Akita as my first dog and I am handleing him pretty good I would say.

And it is definitely a shame on you to have a dog gor a long time in an apartment because maybe they are calm but that does NOT mean they are happy!! the 1st thing i tell anyone looking to add a canine family member is to look at them self. if you are lazy get a lazy dog. dont matter if you have 100 acres if you sit inside watching TV all day. doesnt matter if you live in an apartment if you are active and can include your new family member.

Honstley it dosent matter that you have one of these dogs as a first owner, as long as you have the heart any dog is possible for you, I have a beagle right now and that is my first time as a dog owner, it was difficult at first but now? Now it's way easier so all I'm telling is don't listen to people who say "no this dog is not good for you since your going to be a dog owner for the first time" just follow the dog you love and you think it's suitable for you and in the end of the day you will not think this is hard :)

Hello, akita owner here! Experience doesn't matter if you're 100% willing to research and put time into the dog. As soon as the akita gets all his/her vaccines get it socialised asap! Puppy socialising courses are a must to reduce chances of the akita becoming aggressive later on. However, sometimes even with extensive training they can still be dog/stranger aggressive, so take note of that. If you acknowledge and willing to deal with that, then go ahead in getting an akita. Positive reinforcement works best with them and they can co-exist with other dogs/animals if you use the method correctly.
Btw If you're a kid I wouldn't get a shelter akita at all, get a pup so it'll bond with your family.

Decent list, partially. I am a trainer in southeast Texas. I work with shelters and I see every one of these breeds. Mainly chow, husky, Akita, corso, and sharpay. But the most is German Shepard's and malinois. Omg...its not because the breeds are bad, but the owners are. Many people turn their cute puppy back in at 9 months to 18 months for destruction, leash pulling, reactive on leash, or misinterpreted aggression.
Good breeders won't even sell some of these breeds to first time owners. Some have bred for temperament and will pick a pup with a better demeanor, but the owner has to be willing to put in the time and training. Not 5 minutes a day, but hours. I now have 4 corsi. Love my pack and they are my example of pups that get thrown away from lack of training. Shelters are not just full of strays, but pure bred dogs that people didnt realize how much work, training, and leadership they need.

My first ever dog was a border collie, they are a lot and you have to be active with a large yard but otherwise, your ok. I now own a Australian Shepherd and they are a better breed than a border collie, my reasoning:
      1) they look slightly similar (ears, body type, and facial structure)
      2) they are smaller
      3) they have a similar temperament ( are ok with people so they don't bark much, cunning, and very smart )
If ur looking for a border collie but can't keep up with one, an Australian Shepherd is a great alternative breed

I have a border collie and I disagree. She gets possession aggression pretty bad, has had me hostage in one spot for awhile at times, at times I thought she was going to seriously hurt someone and I have kids so that was scary. . I looked into rehoming her and in that process found out that the aggression very common in this breed when they experience big changes or bored (moved into apartment after my divorce, no longer had fenced in yard that I used to have so both those were true). I fortunately was able to get it under control and it’s a rare occurrence now but I have to stick to a strict routine, make sure we are clear of triggers (can’t let her eat out of food bowl without me holding it, can’t leave a blanket laying around off a bed, can’t approach her when she’s laying in certain places, etc etc etc) and make sure she gets exercise (walks and playing ball) and more car rides (her happy place). I think what I go thru would be extremely overwhelming for some people.

Huskies can be good family dogs, but they need lots of exercise and training, since they are stubborn. I would also be careful if you have young children as a husky may knock them over while playing. Huskies also have a strong prey drive so if you have a cat or another small animal I would not recommend a husky. As long as you are willing to put in the time and effort to train and exercise a husky they can be great family pets. A large fenced in yard is also highly recommended as Huskies are known escape artists from yards.
      Hope this helps!

Krishna Manohar you just have to train them right 🤷🏻‍♀️If they’re trained right, they’re the most loving and loyal dogs

I agree with this list except I'd like to add another dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer. I knew a couple who got one of these dogs primarily because they liked the looks of the dog. Big Mistake! They didn't have the yard size and didn't exercise the dog as they should have. The dog couldn't be left alone for more than an hour or so without tearing up the house. They finally gave the dog away to a family in a rural area where they could accommodate the dog's energy. They should have done their homework.

I have two cane corso mastiffs! My biggest one is 160 pounds and if very tall! The breeders were amazed at her size! And she isn’t fat. She has a lot of muscle and is very tall!

I got a belgian malinois recently and it is probably one of the best dogs besides being overly energetic and they like to make messes
