A few days ago I had to put down my American Eskimo Gaia. I had her from 8 weeks old and she died one week shy of her 11th birthday. I was a first time dog owner in 2011 when I got her. The breed was actually a compromise with my ex wife. She wanted a Bichon Frees, and I wanted an Alaskan Malamute. We found Eskimo dogs in the local classifieds and decided to go take a look. When we got there we met the dad who had such a great personality in a dog. He was active and playing with the kids at the house, listened well, and was a people pleaser. Narrator: Cavalier’s shed less then other breeds. Remember people do your research before getting any type of pet.
I guess you've never had anything except for cavalier?? Because clearly you don't know what you're talking about with the hair situation compared to other breeds. Ever seen a husky, collie, sheltie, GSD get groomed?

i recommend a *Japanese Chin* if you already owned a dog or maybe as a first time too!! very social and "royal" my *Japanese Chin* named "Bangee" barks only rarely (barks when VERY excited) .he's a rescue, but he loves belly rubs BUT dislikes grooming because the previous owner didn't groom. Pug, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle.... Awww. I love little-bit Guard dogs also..... BTW if it's any dog breeds, I love all dog breeds.
Cross breeds such as labxcollie are really the best, they are intelligent, extremely loyal, playful yet happy to sleep most of the day, and rarely have any health issues
A good first time big/medium sized dog is definitely a bassethound. Those dogs are a blast to have around the house. Though in their older years they tend to pick up some health issues. But unfortunately thats the world we live in. They are very friendly and aren't to energetic except for food. They do tent to shed but it isn't anything ridiculous. Plus with a big dog that should be expected. Also no matter how big they get they always think they're lapdogs.
i have a Papillion right now, and I must say... I never would dare to think my tiny dog could jump up to 1,2 meters. Coda is like the most chill dog ever xd, he loves snacks, sleep, playing, licking and most of all he LOVES his toys, it's funny how papillons are good at finding entertainment for themselves xD. I've had 2 Papillions now, both great dogs and do not require a lot of dog knowledge (if u like bigger dogs, i would go for the Golden Retriever, also had two, they are the best cuddle buddies on the planet)
Pugs and cavaliers are severely inbred and lazy and lovable but what you’ll save in effort in training you’ll make up for in really expensive vet bills. Pugs often have soft pallet issues and require surgery and cavaliers are susceptible to so many heart problems and syringomyelia. Get a different breed from this list that isn’t so messed up!

Any small to medium sized dog can be good for first time owners and especially for apartments as long as the owner knows how much work any dog needs and patience they will need
Definitely not all. Throw in small-medium working or herding breeds and you’ll be in for a challenge, ESPECIALLY for apartments. In fact, some of the most energetic breeds are small-medium sized! A fenced in yard with plenty of room to run is almost required for small-medium working/herding breeds, and not necessarily great for apartment life unless you have a place they can go to every day for a few hours to channel their energy.
Tina Love no, I’m saying that not ALL small/medium sized breeds. There are certainly many small or medium sized breeds that work well, but something like a border collie isn’t suited well for apartments at all. They are smart, medium sized herding dogs that need to work with a large open area. Definitely not apartment or first time owner material.
Tina Love a cavapoo isn’t a breed, and is very unpredictable in terms of temperament. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a generally laid back dog. They don’t need a lot of physical or mental stimulation. A poodle on the other hand, is a very intelligent and hard working breed. Not sure if a cavapoo is crossed with a standard, mini, or toy. Regardless, poodles need a firm but gentle trainer and will provide extensive socializing. Poodles were originally water retrievers. It’s impossible to tell if a cavapoo is a good apartment dog, because there is no breed standard.
We got our first puppy 7 months ago he is a maltipoo a mix between Maltese and poodle, he is easy tempered, amazing with my sister, negative, and very smart.
One of the best ones on the list is greyhounds, they are super loud and funny. I own a greyhound saluki mix and they are quite tall and loud, extremely good with kids. Yes,they may attack cats and small animals but they can be trained not to.if you live in the countryside or own large spaces with a bunch of grass, you’ll have a good laugh watching them run around! It’s funny recording them in slow motion with their tongues going everywhere.

@@ol8174 I don't know how expensive it is in your place. About the diet,we got our Shih Tzu when he was only 4 weeks, and the the vet suggested royal canin upto three months, which isn't too expensive and the we would go for a raw diet, anyway, Shih tzus eat very very less, about half of breeds such as labs and golden retrievers. The only issue with them is grooming, you have to comb them everyday, or their hair gets matted, you have to cut their hair around once a month, but taking it to a groomer might be expensive, so I suggest you self groom him cause he might not let you do it once you've taken him to the groomer more than twice, but fortunately the y don't shed at all! Shih tzus have varied personalities, contrary to what the internet says about them, (calm, don't bark etc) some are actually very super active and not really calm! Are Dobermen a good breed for first time owners? Dobermen are my absolutely favourite breed of dogs and im looking to buy one. But is it a good idea if i have never owned a dog before? Please let me know
Me who got a catahoula/Australian Shepherd dog, he’s a great SD in training, I can handle this dog so now I know what my limit is 😂 but definitely gives me a thinker on what small breed of dog to get to lay back with
Mitzus Maltese/Shih-tzus are pretty easy to look after. They only need grooming once every few months and don’t shed. Their teeth can be an issue however as my girl Molly had too many teeth and had some removed. My boy Merlin was a happy & healthy boy until a liver tumour got him. 😢 They’re very affectionate, sooky and playful. Great for kids and families with other smaller pets such as cats or other small-medium dogs.
I am looking to get a puppy within the next year or two and I am struggling to decide which breed to get. I would like a dog that can adapt to my lifestyle (I have limited mobility) and can get along with my 3 cats. Which breed would you recommend?
I always had German Sheppards and now for the first time living alone, I would love a Buddy by my side. Biggest problem being my Apartment. I have seen smaller, but I certainly worry in doing a sheppard a big disservice in having him live in that small space for some Years. I plan on getting something bigger, but you got to start somewhere.
I would like to spill my 2cents of information about Pugs being a good breed for first time dog owners. I have had a pug for seven and half years and I lost her last week. In her lifespan she did develop a lot of health issues and it was really difficult to solve most of them. We changed numerous vets and last week she left us due to a heart attack at the vets clinic post her pyometra surgery. It’s true that no dog can love you and care for you as much as pugs but it’s also true that these poor souls do go through a lot of health issues. So I would say pugs are not for first time dog owners. They definitely need someone who can understand dog language and behaviour to keep their health in check.
Don’t worry I have experience, actually when I have two dogs rn German shepherd and a Rhodesian Ridgeback bit when I grow up, move out, etc. I want a border collie and Australian shepherd!!!
What about german shepherds? I had a lab named toby when I was 6 and my family never knew when to train him so we ended up training him at 2 years. He became aggressive so we ended up giving him away to one of our relatives. Now were gonna get german shepherd and I have no experience in keeping a dog. But I love shepherds for their loyalty, bravness and cuteness :3 so am I making a right decision or should I stick to a breed from this list? Pleaseee help....
German shepherds are really good and mainly protective breeds and also they like kids and if you socialize fast they will like and respect cats. My uncle has Sheprador ( german shepherd mix between labrador) and he has really calm and sweet and mainly cuddly personality but he needs lots of care and your time.
I have a friend who got a german shepherd recently. They are pretty tough for first time owners since they need lots and lots of training. My friend decided to attend a dog school with her shepherd and it has been going good, but I believe it will be difficult on your own.
Everyone, PLEASE REMEMBER: you can train a dog anyway. I’ve seen Pit bulls (known for their aggression) cuddle up on the couch and give kisses. You get whatever dog you want and with time and patience, you can train it however. It doesn’t matter the breed, it’s the personality of the dog.
Golden retriever the best, I remember I met one in front of a church that has a field, it jumped on me and wanted to play, best playfull dog energetic and friendly.
Single female living in an apartment. I'm looking for a dog that won't shred that much, protective and would exercise with me. When I go to work, hopefully they can be by himself.
A poodle. The don’t shed a lot. But need lots of grooming. And the being left at home all comes down to how much you train the dog. My biggest tip is to start training as soon as you get the dog. Having structure in a puppies day will help it when you leave it at home!
Okay so i live in a rented 3 bhk apartment with a balcony on the top most floor and i want to get a dog for the first time can u please suggest one to me?.. Im very confused because of the breed..and i will walk it everyday.
Australian shepherds shed quite a lot and they are an active breed. It might be a good chose but I don’t know how active u are. Border collies are also great if u are active. I have one. They will be able to keep up with ur activities for longer then an Aussie would. They are also much smarter so training is quick, fun, and easy. They are loyal, loving, outgoing, and great watch dogs. However, they sound great and all but if you live in an apartment or small home will small yard it’s not a good option (same with aussies) my border collie needs a 3 mile walk in the morning and a 3 mile walk in the evening along with about 5 hours of playtime and training sessions in the mid day. And he’s only a puppy! Same goes with Australian Shepherds. So if u are willing to provide that, it’s a great choice for you. I don’t know much about Shiba Inus, sorry.
I have one, but it doesn’t count, he acts like a husky :| one of the only dog breeds I DONT LIKE. But I’m not gonna be a jerk cuz of that, I love him, but he’s a dummy and reckless, and vocal -~-

i think overall for first time owners the labs and golden retrievers, since (im 100% NOT saying all, just SOME) some german shepereds can be a bit aggresive, but depeneds how you train them
I got a german shepard as my first dog and ended up having to rehome her. German shepards are extremely protective and while they are smart they are stubborn and high energy. They also can have problems with other dogs if not introduced early enough. For my german shepard it could have been that we got her when she was already 6 months old. We trained her nonstop and even had a friend who was a military dog trainer help us with the process. In the end it was the dog fights that made us rehome her. My dad, despite being told by our friend to not intervene with the dog fights kept doing so anyway and eventually got hurt. However she was a great dog, she was good on a leash and learned quickly however her high energy, agressiveness, and stubborness were nearly impossible to deal with as a first time pet owner.
I own 1 chihuahua and 1 shih-poo (shih tzu+ poodle) And they need 2 walks a day lots of training and playtime so that they will be at least a LITTLE calm and not super active throughout the day, but they are super loyal and loving but 1 very important thing is that you commit to owning a dog for 15+ years and training as well because that is very important or else you will have a very bad behaved dog
My first dog is an Icelandic Sheepdog, I got her when she was a few weeks old and she just turned 10 years old in March. I couldn’t have picked a better dog breed to start with! ☺️

Narrator: Cavalier’s shed less then other breeds.
Me a person who has had a Cavalier for more then 10 years and who’s family has kept them for more then 30 some years: Let me tell you they shred way more then most breeds so much so that by the end of the week if you haven’t vacuumed there are dog hair rhinoceroses flouting across your floor. Also while yes the breed is very well natured and very lovable and affectionate I would not recommend them to first time dog owners because they need daily grooming especially their ears which get dragged through everything and knot up very easily, Also they have quite a few health issues such as heart murmurs and hip and back problems. Remember people do your research before getting any type of pet.
I guess you've never had anything except for cavalier?? Because clearly you don't know what you're talking about with the hair situation compared to other breeds. Ever seen a husky, collie, sheltie, GSD get groomed?
So many other breeds have health issues way worse than the ones you listed.

Most crossbreeds are very healthy, its a shame that in many places cross breeding is banned.
Not to be funny but there consistently called the least intelligent of alll breeds lol
So it can be difficult to train well cuz there dumb
i have a Papillion right now, and I must say...

@@avae3894 ?? So are u saying that no dog can fit apartments??
Tina Love no, I’m saying that not ALL small/medium sized breeds. There are certainly many small or medium sized breeds that work well, but something like a border collie isn’t suited well for apartments at all. They are smart, medium sized herding dogs that need to work with a large open area. Definitely not apartment or first time owner material.
@@avae3894 What about a Cavapoo?
Surprised the basset hound wasn’t on the list. Super chill. Super lazy. Easy to love.

You'd have to deal with their personality, but I guess that only lasts till they complete one year of age!
Hope this helps!

RIP sorry for your loss

Oh okay, thank you both so much for your advice 🙂
Everyone,
PLEASE REMEMBER: you can train a dog anyway.
Labrador are number 1 on my list!
And next would be a Pitbull!

@@Tw1nter well they’re big shedders but theyre protective and active😂 im sure she can live with it
A poodle. The don’t shed a lot. But need lots of grooming. And the being left at home all comes down to how much you train the dog. My biggest tip is to start training as soon as you get the dog. Having structure in a puppies day will help it when you leave it at home!

I needed this video because in some weeks my mom will let me and my brothers each get our own dogs and I want the best dog possible
So I‘m looking for a dog and think about getting a Shiba Inu or a australien Shepherd anyone got feedback or tipps?
My neice has big yard but this puippy is bullying older dog GSD

Labs, German Shepards, and Golden Retrievers are all great first time dogs for beginners.
I totally agree with you
My 3 favourite breeds though I love all dogs...
i think overall for first time owners the labs and golden retrievers, since (im 100% NOT saying all, just SOME) some german shepereds can be a bit aggresive, but depeneds how you train them
I got a german shepard as my first dog and ended up having to rehome her.
Hi thank you so much 😊
But pls help me choose Pomeranian or golden retriever
I own 1 chihuahua and 1 shih-poo (shih tzu+ poodle)
And they need 2 walks a day lots of training and playtime so that they will be at least a LITTLE calm and not super active throughout the day, but they are super loyal and loving but 1 very important thing is that you commit to owning a dog for 15+ years and training as well because that is very important or else you will have a very bad behaved dog
