    Keitel truly is an exemplar of a study ... A rare case of an actor who not only inherently knows the _essence_ of raw acting ability - or sheer latent talent - but perhaps more so, possesses a highly-attuned (or even, uncanny) attributable understanding of that more commonly associated 'grey area' of characterization-study in his roles to a degree that most [leading] actors never quite acquire through years of [even] formal study and/or practice - a true 'character-actor's character actor ...
    _'Bravo!',_ Harvey, for giving us some truly great films of your many multi-faceted (and twisted) characters over the years!
    Thanks for posting!

    • @dkelly26666
      @dkelly26666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fun fact: The role was originally more of a womanizing cad who tries to explain. Instead, it was Keitel's idea to make him blow up and be a monster. Then, on "Taxi Driver", the character was written more menacing, and Keitel chose to play him more laid back and easy going, while he's pimping young girls. In both instances, Keitel's choice made the characters seem more evil. Keitel has said his girlfriend at the time saw "Alice" and got angry at him in real life, LOL. A real compliment to him as an actor.

    • @dkelly26666
      @dkelly26666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@siniaura No, he was originally in Kubrick's last film, "Eyes Wide Shut". He was involved from pre-production and rehearsals, and then for several weeks of filming in London. Then, he left mid-production and was replaced by Sydney Pollack. He didn't end up in the finished film. Keitel's take is that basically Kubrick was, obviously, a genius. But that they just didn't get along well. He says Kubrick 'disrespected' him. Legend has it Kubrick spent a week just shooting a brief scene with Keitel and Tom Cruise and then left Keitel in a hotel for weeks waiting around, while keitel had other projects and offers waiting. He stayed as long as he'd originally signed up for, and then left. Kubrick learned he'd left, and he and Warner Bros. released Keitel from his contract. Jennifer Jason-Leigh also shot a cameo scene. Over a year later, Kubrick wanted her to come back and re-shoot it. She couldn't, as she was in Canada, shooting a lead role in David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ". So, Kubrick cut her from the film, and recast and reshot the scene with another actress. John Malkovich was originally cast, as well, but he had a falling out with Kubrick early in pre-production and dropped out and was recast. Only the Cruises, Tom and Nicole, stuck around for nearly two years working on the film.

    My personal favorite performance of his is in Bad Lieutenant. It’s a rough flick, not for everybody but he is scorchingly good in the role. One of the vilest characters ever committed to film. Also, he was incredible in a lesser-known flick called The Grey Zone as a truly terrifying SS officer. Helped produce that film too and worked for scale along with a bunch of other actors who did the same. It’s a gritty examination of the Auschwitz uprising of Jews in 1944.
