Harvey Keitel: A most durable and "really lucky" actor

  • Hollywood hasn't always considered Harvey Keitel, as he puts it, "bankable." But he's always memorable, in such films as Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver" and "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Thelma & Louise," "Bugsy" (for which he earned an Academy Award nomination), "Pulp Fiction," and his latest, a reunion with Scorsese in "The Irishman." Keitel talked with "CBS This Morning" co-host Anthony Mason about his journey from Brooklyn and the Marines to being a "really lucky" actor who is not, he contends, a star.

Saw Harvey in a small role in a recent challenging film called The Painted Bird. Was pleased to see him still working , especially in important work like that film.

The older he gets the more he reminds me of the great Charlie Ruggles. Aside from that, he's the only one from that generation who I'm not entirely sick of.

We are all lucky to have had a chance to see Harvey Keitel's interpretation of characters. REAL characters, lasting in the memory, no matter how big the role.
One very memorable role this clip somehow doesn't mention was his part as George Baines in "The Piano."

*Bad Lieutenant* is one of the greatest films ever made. City of Industry, Blue Collar, The Border, The Young Americans, Copland, the list goes on. He's in Top 10 Greats. He's a man's man.
