- There are voices that talk about the end of the good old .308 Winchester. However, this round still has a lot going for it as it was, is, and always will be the best all around hunting cartridge out there, and as such, it is very popular.
Now, to talk about the end of this or that cartridge is not new. Whenever there is one new ueber cartridge, others who are in a similar performance range are seen as on the way out. One example is the 6.5 Creedmoor, the so-called .308 killer. Look at it today, and what do you see? The 6.5 Creedmoor is still around but so is the .308 Winchester. Yes, the Creedmoor even has grown immensely in its popularity, but that does not change that the .308 Winchester is very popular and remains so. In fact, globally, it is one of the mot popular cartridges you can find. You do not have to take my word for it, just look at what is happening on the shooting market.

The 308 will never die, I have my other calibers and keep turning to the 308
Easy to reload with umpteen brass and other components readily available. Also economical to reload, being an extremely efficient cartridge design means more power with less powder compared to others.

The 308 will never die because all the others from 243 to 358 caliber bullets used in the same case.
Some day the swords will be beaten into plow shares, but until then....
Will the 3006 ever die?
No because the .308 is at the limits of powder capacity, the 3006 isn't. Its more versatile not to mention all the folks that have M1 garands. Also it's like the .45 somethings will never die 😊

Did you know the 308, is a caliber, invented and approved by a government committee.
For all Nato partners, to agree on a common cartridge for nato nations.
The Europeans would not accept the 30-06.
The Americans would not accept the 8 MM.
The 308, would fit a short action rifle, and was accepted.
3006 makes 308 obsolete.
300 WSM makes 30-06 obsolete.
300 RUM makes 300 WSM obsolete, and so on....
