Wow! I am so grateful for this information and channel!! There is a lot of information on one or the other type of sports (strength vs endurance), but I am working on the best health possible (so I train for triathlon, doing regular gym workouts and yoga for mobility).
This is great!! Thank you! New subscriber here.

I totally agree with this approach and that is why next season I shall be putting together my own training program. The one I've had this year, from a well-respected coach, has never specified exertion levels and has always mixed strength and specific Hyrox conditioning in one workout and apart from a slight cutting back of volume in the week before a race it has had no periodisation. I am confident I can do better for myself. It's a shame, coaches- $100 a month should buy something that is both bespoke and incorporating the latest research.

Did you feel your progress was held back?

@@wod-science Yes, I think I could have held on to my running gains as I transferred from triathlon last year but I could have really done with more emphasis on strength training and less on doing loads of Hyrox sims.

Great video. Beside experience, you have not mentioned age. What is your take for improvements based on the age of the athlete ie do those techniques apply identically to older athletes, or are further adjustments necessary? At 47, I really don’t progress much, but do not know if it’s due to fatigue, age, programming…

Excellent question, age as well as simply training experience do slow down progression. There is no question.
I would say, the principles definitely apply to 'older' athletes (not saying you are old). To keep progressing, you will have to hammer your weaknesses and focus even more on recovery. The amount of volume in training you can still process will determine your long-term progress. If you cannot do the necessary volume due to injuries or fatigue, progress will stall.
      Hope that helps.

@@wod-science At 47, my daughter's crossfit coach called me a "double-master" ;-) I take it in stride, do not worry, and am Happy of what I'm doing. Thanks for the great points. As I'm the guy who wanted in your study program but can't perform all exercises to the max due to a weakened elbow, I hear you. I do find that swapping exercises really helps: lat pulldowns hurt a lot less than pullups in my case, for example. It doesn't help you as a researcher as it messes up with you data set, but helps me to keep training at fairly high volumes. Much higher than even 10 years ago to achieve the same result, actually. But that's just more time spent having fun!

Very interesting video and evidence-based info! Do you conduct research studies on performance outcomes in athletes? (I am a post-doc and an athlete and would love to connect if so!)
