As a college student in Milwaukee some years ago, I ended up working jobs that were in the area that is referred to as the ghetto. Milwaukee has always been a city in which ethnic groups have their own areas. Polish are on the south side along with a small Mexican American community. Irish, French and Italian have their dominant ethnic areas on the lower east side of town, with Jewish persons often on the upper east side. Germans were the dominant ethnicity in farming which was just on the outskirts of the city. Majority of black residents lived in the inner city. Working in a neighborhood that was poor, black, culturally and economically cut off from the other parts of the city, was an eye opening experience. Residents were as nice as they could be to me. Tommy. Your assessment of the situation in the US and the media/social media spewing so much divisiveness is on the money. I’m originally from Kenya, of Indian descent, but married my lovely American wife from Wisconsin and raised a family with her in California over the 35 years, but now more than ever I have the urge to go back to Africa. There’s just something special about the place and the people that’s hard to describe to the average person here in the US. Your videos have been awesome and I look forward to following you in your adventures
@@tuforu4 You are always in the comment section of any video about Africa, spewing nonsense. If you have such a problem with Africa and Africans, why don't you just stop watching these videos. You are beginning to sound like a broken record.
I have to think that a big part of the reason you enjoy yourself in Africa is because of the great energy you bring to the table. You don't judge these people and simply treat them like the decent human beings they are. That kind of energy is sure to be reciprocated.
I felt sad seeing you and Josey on the Moto knowing it may be awhile before you see each other again (assuming you're both wanting to continue a relationship). She seems like a true African Queen and I hope you guys can end up getting married :D

At age 55, I moved to the Philippines and lived there for 12 years with my Filipina wife, until her death on 03/01/18. I returned to to the Philippines in 2019 and stayed about 6 months. Everyone should travel and live outside the U.S. for a few months, perhaps a year. I guarantee, their perspective on life would change.
I serve in the military and seen the best and worst of mankind. Trust me I never take my life for granted. But I also learned to love this country more than I used to as a child.

Tommy, this is the most beautiful video I’ve watched from you! You’re showing the world a truth that they have a really hard time seeing with just words that somebody tells them. You’re showing with your videos, your interactions with people around the world, that we’re truly all brothers and sisters, we all share the blood. This is the reality that people can’t see in America, because of the reasons you mentioned in this video. Thank you! I hope that more Americans and people in all countries watch this.
I lived and got married in Nigeria humble experience I love it's my home and u right in USA I struggle here paycheck to paycheck it's horrible the people are not nice anymore like africa.your so right brother.tbh I hate living in America it's depressing
Sabbatical makes a great point at 4:10 about spending at least once in your life extended time abroad. Unfortunately too many Americans never venture outside their surrounding states and have thus a narrow viewpoint of the world.
Well done Tommy, I'm glad that you decided to go to Africa and find out for yourself how African countries and people are really like. Too bad that people are not living in trees in the jungle and all the children are not sick and dying from malnutrition and all have to walk five miles to get some dirty water. This is what the western media has portrayed about Africa to the world. I'm glad that you got the chance to make these videos and show the world what Africa is really like. I hope more people will watch your videos. God bless you!
Min 4: "If you can, spend and extended period of time abroad" as an American that has lived abroad for more than 20 years, 100% agree. That is what 90% of Americans need to open their eyes to what life is really about!
It goes for all countries, not just Americans. When people start taking on an identity based on their skin or nationality, ignorance has already won, and peace is lost.
Are you suggesting that our white people skincolor makes us somehow automatically ignorant, and we shouldn't have any national pride!? That sounded more than borderline rasism to me!?
Brilliant and informative and heart felt. Years ago I worked in Algeria and spent time in both Sidi Bel Abbes and Oran with some weeks into the Sahara and up into the Ajax mountains toward Morocco. Funny but I always thought those places were a bit corrupted by the Mediterranean and European influences. Don't get me wrong they were beautiful with incredible food and scenery that were quite jarring for the American from a small Massachusetts farm town but they were not the Africa I was hoping to see. Perhaps I had the same misconceptions that I had learned about what my time there would be as you describe about your early expectations for your travel in Africa. For me then your videos and narration and simple interaction with the people and the streets and in some cases narrow little places I do not know I could handle, have been eye opening and intriguing. I look forward to your every post and hope to see many more and wish you Godspeed and health as you act as our eyes and ears there. Thank you Tommy. All the best.
True, I'm also a white guy from NY state. I also went to Uganda this past year during the pandemic. I had the same mindset as you about wanting to break free from this toxic environment and experience a more visceral life. Uganda is such a special place that it changed my life for the better. The people there have a different vibe, a generally way more positive one than the people in NY that I've met in my life. Just like you said, at least I can walk down the street in Uganda and i have a smile on my face and other people are smiling too. Here in NY it's really not like that at all. It's a rarity to see that here.
Thats the point. Africa seems to be cool place unless you earn money in other country, in rich country. Its not that cool if you are born in Africa or other poor country becouse you dont have that choise where to live in. For example im jealous for americans just becouse you can earn money for visit other countries. Be glad you are born in america.
@@nutka2618, hey I changed my original comment a bit. But anyways I love Uganda and I want to come back soon. You should feel grateful that there are such genuine and friendly people with good morals there in Africa because it's very rare to find that here in america. As for making money to survive there. Maybe start a business of exporting goods to other countries to earn the higher valued currencies of other countries.
@@nutka2618, there are successful people from every country in the world who started off as poor and from a poor country. Of course I'm grateful for what I have, but you should be grateful for what you have too. Wealth is subjective to the interpreter. As a simple outdoorsman, wealth for me is to live a simple life in an area with a good climate and friendly people. New York state is the exact opposite. Unpredictable and generally cold weather and unpredictable and generally cold people.
You indeed had gr8 parents raising you as you are a disciplined person with... humility.... God bless you... I am grateful you have talked well about my beautiful country 🇹🇿 Tanzania ... and Africa..as well

Glad to see “ a White guy” who portrays the African continent as it really is. Not everyone is dying from hunger or war in Africa. Next time you visit Uganda just swing by Burundi before heading to Congo. You’ll love it without a doubt. Please come with Miss Josey we love your collaboration.

Having lived outside of the UK for 17 years and raised my family in different jurisdictions, different cultures I fully agree with you. Those people living in the home bubbles just need to experience life outside ! Keep the content flowing Tommy !

As African who has lived in Europe and visited other African countries ! Your summary about Africa bring joy to my heart ! Because here in Europe most people think Africa is just a jungle I was amazed one day a lady ask me if people wear clothes in Africa!I can’t imagine how those media like BBC CNN has portrayed Africa to the rest of the world ! Making people to think Africa is just a jungle with all the population uncivilized
In which European country MOST people think Africa is just one big jungle!?
You have received a gift in life. Many. A gift of your wholesomeness. Humility. Acceptance. Need for exploration. A kind soul and particularly, the wanting of sharing all this with the world. You hold no ego and show us without showboating anything. It is what it is. Envious love here from this 58 y/o man living vicariously with you. Much respect.
@Aziz Karim
Please try to go back, even if only for a visit.

You are always in the comment section of any video about Africa, spewing nonsense. If you have such a problem with Africa and Africans, why don't you just stop watching these videos. You are beginning to sound like a broken record.
Hope you follow Wode maya as well.
I have to think that a big part of the reason you enjoy yourself in Africa is because of the great energy you bring to the table. You don't judge these people and simply treat them like the decent human beings they are. That kind of energy is sure to be reciprocated.
Of course. Good energy you bring anywhere will usually reciprocate. Unless you’re in New York. Haha.
I felt sad seeing you and Josey on the Moto knowing it may be awhile before you see each other again (assuming you're both wanting to continue a relationship). She seems like a true African Queen and I hope you guys can end up getting married :D

Safety in your travels, Tommy! And thanks again for the regular reminders of what real humanity looks like...
Dude, you are bang on about social media turning people insane. Calling it an experiment was perfect. Happy for your experience, you seem very at ease and happy about it. Enjoy life my friend. I would love cross paths somewhere on this planet with you one day. All the best.
At age 55, I moved to the Philippines and lived there for 12 years with my Filipina wife, until her death on 03/01/18. I returned to to the Philippines in 2019 and stayed about 6 months. I was scheduled to return there on 04/08/20, but the pandemic shut everything down. I'm still waiting to return. All in all, living there changed my perspective on life. Everyone should travel and live outside the U.S. for a few months, perhaps a year. I guarantee, their perspective on life would change.
I serve in the military and seen the best and worst of mankind. Trust me I never take my life for granted. But I also learned to love this country more than I used to as a child.
My condolences to loss of your wife.
Travelling empties the biggy bank but broadens the mond, goes the saying. My condolences for the death of your beloved wife.
Visit africa and experience the difference
@@natewilliams3211 Don’t you think travelling in a military setting is vastly different from visiting in a tourist setting.
Keep making these videos Tommy. You’re doing very important work in dispelling the miseducation most westerners receive about Africa. I appreciate how open and humble you are regarding cultures different from your own. I look forward to visiting some of the places you’ve been. I would have never known I would want to visit there if it weren’t for you.
I only gravitate to authentic people that's why I follow this channel.
I'm with you on this journey sabbatical. You're the first vlogger I follow "bumper to bumper". Your candid nature, your openness and realness are unparalleled. Keep being real. Keep showing the many stories of Africa. You have avoided what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie would call the Single Story. Well done and good luck.
Amen to this !!
So happy I discovered this channel. I love the way that woman said how African you are . She was totally indifferent to your skin colour and just seen a kindred spirit and a kind soul …. Eagerly awaiting your adventures and thank you 🙏🏼

I don't know why TH-cam decided to recommend this channel to me today but I'm glad it did. Your videos are fascinating. Thanks.

@@Humble-Daniel im not from Africa :p there is a lot of poor countries in the world ;)
@@nutka2618, there are successful people from every country in the world who started off as poor and from a poor country.
@@Humble-Daniel Imagine that I live in place with cold climate, cold people but in addition its poor place xD soo still New York seems better.
