It's a combination of our acquired association of the particular aesthetic with the spacious, grandiose houses of days long gone and the fact that texture adds depth. Depth is important because it does two things: first, it aids the illusion of space, e.g. you perceive the shelving as space because you can the flat rear surface of them, the wall -- if the shelving had flat cabinet doors everywhere you'd feel claustrophobic in this room and, second, the large, flat, monochrome surfaces of the previous state of the room made it look smaller than it really is, particularly on camera because our brains use visual cues from various objects around us to estimate distances and sizes (and also velocity but that's irrelevant here) and cameras are generally not stereoscopic losing even more 3D information in filming/photographing.

There's a couple of things you could do to make the fireplace more realistic - a light dry-brushing of pewter paint on the 'metal' parts of the fire helps a lot, but the best thing is remove the clear plastic 'glass' of the fire and paint the inside of the glass. A dusting of matt lacquer to make the glass foggy helps to hide the fake plastic fuel and makes the flickering flame effect more realistic, then some brown-black paint around the outside edges to simulate soot build up really seals the deal. I did this with a fake fire years ago and it fooled everyone who saw it.

One thing everyone always forgets is that you can always improve inexpensive assemble-it-yourself furniture through the application of real wood veneer and real wood trim on the exposed front edges. Then you can stain it like it were solid wood. So before you assemble the bookshelves, you just cover the top and bottom of each of the panels with veneer, trim the edges, redrill the mounting holes, then trim and glue the wood facing trim to the edges of their respective panels before staining, finishing, and final assembly. Finish the built-ins with more trim molding to make them look integrated into the space. I say this solely because I disdain painted bookshelves when stained wood bookshelves are an option. It's one of those few traditional prejudices that I have with interior decor.

I love everything about this, especially the dentil crown up-lit by the LEDs in the dropped picture moulding. I can’t. The TRIM! Trim is the key to all things ornate, finished, classic, and beautiful! You really nailed this one.
I love this! It looks fantastic already, but have you thought about swapping out the painted trim for wood stained to match the fireplace or the rich brown in the floor tiles? It could really tie the room together beautifully. Maybe even extend that to the wainscoting trim for a cohesive, polished look!
Not sure if anybody has already said this because I don’t want to go through all the comments, but it really makes the space look much bigger than it really is. Great job.
A blank slate like Hansi's white void room is great you can add anything and not have to intergate anything that was in the room already. The floors are my favorite part of the whole room it really looks beautiful.

Love the overall effect and admire Martina's ability to make her crazy/lovely ideas become reality. Having recently upgraded to a Sit-Stand desk, I do hope that you kept that feature of the desk. I can't tell from the shots if this shots. Also great job editing a month's worth of work into a quick < 30 min video.

What an amazing find!!
Yeah - they used the trim really well. Even if it took 7 days 🤗😉 I also liked it on the desk. Was at first skeptical that the IKEA Alex combination would look good - but the results convinced me. The airflow covering 😍😇. Not sure how expensive the wood trim is though (together with the time invested) - but yes really beautiful.
@@sebastianjost The question though, is where? Looks really nice! My only wish is that you would've gotten a Samsung The Frame TV to hang above the fireplace and made a custom frame for it. It would've really taken the room to the next level!
@Nerdforge definitely makes sense! Well, it can always be a future video - "I made a TV into an actual painting", and maybe even add some stuff to the screen to make it look more legit (if you've ever seen the moving portraits at Hogwarts castle at the Universal Theme Parks, you'll know what I mean!)
@Nerdforge If you ever upgrade to a Samsung Frame. There is a company called "Deco Tv Frame" that makes real frames for the Samsung frame, they are much better than the cheap looking one Samsung makes.
This room is amazing!!! We painted our living room green last year, and we love it! We also have built-in shelves by our (real) fireplace and a TV above, a brown leather sofa and a tapestry floral loveseat. My desk (which goes up to the ceiling) is in a corner by a window. I shopped for old frames too. Your room makes me feel at home. ❤ I love your book collection!
Absolutely perfect mix of aesthetic and useful. I love that you customise each rooms of your house it's own style, always doing it completly, not just a small touch. That's great. And yes, we all tend to underestimate the time these projects need. We're slowly renovating our own house... With work schedule, with money issue,...some things are still on stand by. But we try to follow a 1year/ 1project planning. It just feel magical to make your home your own one step at a time.
Love the energy and style you guys bring, top tier! And the picture you found in the first second hand store with the two kids bring me so much childhood memories as we used to have the same picture in the old house I grew up in. Such a nice estetique of a gaming room. Only nitpicky gripe from my side is that the shelves needs MORE BOOKS. Mom and dad used to fill their shelves with old lexicons just to make the shelves look used. We never read the lexicons tho haha.
The Fireplace needs some copper accents. copper leaf maybe. would be great, and the patina will match the walls eventually. or brass to tie into the fixtures.
I love how you have that image of The long Library in Trinity college on the screen in the big reveal. I spend a lot of time sitting in that library with a cup of coffee reading in a corner.
Martina, i gotta ask... how many level upgrade points did you spend on your skill tree? Your character oughtta be maxxed out by now lol. Hansi has gotta be the luckiest man alive to have someone who shares in his passions and even invest their own time and money into his passion. Its truly a wonderful thing to see!

Decanter is the perfect word. It's very old fashioned, but, then, so are the silhouettes of the decanters. There may be a new name for them these days, but, in bygone eras, like the ones depicted in every Dark Academia furnished room: decanters (because, one decants a beverage into them, from which to fill people's drinking vessels of choice, usually glasses) Anyway, I love your videos & enthusiasm & details Congratulations on the engagement 🎉 (Regardless of how long ago it happened, congratulations, nonetheless) Also, thank you for sharing your life and projects with us
Such a great build! It surprises me that the room seems bigger after the build even though the bookcases take up some of the floor space. Only thing I would have done different is to do black instead of the dark green. Also, I was surprised to see the cord running down from the TV to the top of the fireplace. It would have been easy to put that in the wall while you were doing all of that remodeling.
Billy, the unsung hero! I love that bookshelf so much, it's so versatile! I used to love Kallax a lot, but man, Billy's are just perfect for display items and books. It is also MUCH cheaper than other bookshelves. Just under 700kr if you want one of the short long fellas.
Whoa!?!?!? The way Martina's ideas are realized is crazy. Additionally, she gave her a present of stock furnishings and a different aesthetic. Not to mention how good Martina and Hans are together as a pair. Love you guys,
Despite myself not really being into creative and crafty things I always enjoy seeing it in your videos! Also: I've already ordered the stealth hoodie and now I've seen that all the pieces have Tengwar line on it. Well, I guess I just have to submit to my inner LotR nerd and buy them all.
My father did something like that a few years ago. He was drilling through a stone wall, though. The drill bit overheated, and when he took the drill out of the wall, it was still slightly rotating. The softened metal became a nice 90 degree bend and gave him a good whack in the forehead. Had to get stitches, but otherwise was okay.
So here's the cool thing As you started adding your Billy's the acoustics in the room changed and it's really cool to hear that evolution of the change. Because when you're describing the plan for the fireplace I could hear a slight difference in the acoustics.
You are so freaking talented. This has got to be one of your most beautiful projects since you built your studio. Congratulations on a build well done.
I just LOVE this transformation, this might just be my new favorite projects that you've ever done! The vibe is immaculate and now I can't help but dream to have a space like this for myself one day, the coziness is over the top

This is a fever dream, I love it all. The colors, the trim details, the nook, the fireplace, ahhh y’all have out done yourselves. 😍 My only note is to make all of the lighting the same warm tone, it can be head ache inducing to have cool and warm tones in one space. Or just put all the warm tones on one switch and all the cool tones one the other depending on the task at hand.

You both did such a great job with this!!
Ahhh loved this!!! Nice work guys 🤘😄
Thank you guys!! 🥹🙏
That room is goals but also your relationship is goals! The amount of fun and also teamwork you guys have together is honestly the stuff of dreams
Some things I really love and hope never change: authentic Martina and the green screen insert of Martina when she does "voice overs". Their creativity and humor lift my mood every time they post ❤️
Martina could design and execute anything. Her creativity knows no bounds. Amazing
It´s always a good sign if I check multiple times during the video if I have already liked it, just to find that I indeed already liked it :) So fun to watch you two work on these amazing projects.
totally 😂
I love everything about this, especially the dentil crown up-lit by the LEDs in the dropped picture moulding. I can’t. The TRIM! Trim is the key to all things ornate, finished, classic, and beautiful! You really nailed this one.
Martina has arm goals. Can you share your workout routine?? How do you stay strong and good posture with all the work you do?
I love this! It looks fantastic already, but have you thought about swapping out the painted trim for wood stained to match the fireplace or the rich brown in the floor tiles? It could really tie the room together beautifully. Maybe even extend that to the wainscoting trim for a cohesive, polished look!
Not sure if anybody has already said this because I don’t want to go through all the comments, but it really makes the space look much bigger than it really is. Great job.
They already said it but that’s ok 😂
A blank slate like Hansi's white void room is great you can add anything and not have to intergate anything that was in the room already. The floors are my favorite part of the whole room it really looks beautiful.
Nori is so absolutely Mama's boy and feels so safe to even sleep where you are working and drilling and clearly making alot of noise. You are his hooman and he is your child. Love it. Love Nori. More Nori content!!!!
Nori's such a sweet boy!
My daughter and I want to do Dark Academia in our whole house. This is so inspiring. Thank you. It turned out gorgeous
this project was insane, its like you enter another house through that on door. i have a little vintage corner in my house, nothing special but i felt like giving a little space to my love for ancient, and you given me so much ideas on how to evolve it in the future
I definitely hope we get to see you guys renovate every room in your new house at some point -like someone else said, the idea that each room (or a set of rooms, like dining/kitchen or dining/living, depending on how it's laid out) is a different aesthetic is so cool and fun
Cottagecore parlor/sitting area, steampunk kitchen (to match the workshop kitchen), victorian wizard living room... the possibilities are endless for a house of your own
yes yes, Robin Hobb definitely deserves a place of pride on THOSE shelves. incredible work!
10:18 Ugh yeah, it's impossible to get nice details and trims that are 1) actually the thickness and detail you want, and 2) actually not just styrofoam that breaks the moment you breathe on it. I tried looking for some nice trim so I WOULDN'T need to rip off all my wallpaper on one side, but alas, no dice. But those trims you got? Absolutely amazing, gosh, they're gorgeous. What an amazing find!!
Yeah - they used the trim really well. Even if it took 7 days 🤗😉
I also liked it on the desk.
Was at first skeptical that the IKEA Alex combination would look good - but the results convinced me.
The airflow covering 😍😇.
Not sure how expensive the wood trim is though (together with the time invested) - but yes really beautiful.
I guess you could find a place with a CNC or 3D printer and make your own trims?
@@sebastianjost The question though, is where? Maybe I'm just a little silly, but I have no idea if anyone/anywhere in my area has that, and doesn't charge way out of my budget :/ I live in a somewhat smaller town in Norway, so I dunno where to even start looking haha
I do know some people with a 3D printer, but I honestly think trying to just carve it myself would end up being cheaper and easier XD Filament is expensive (and I know; I sell them at work)
@irisbaggins Is "Fablab" something in your area? It's a shared workplace with fancy machines and equipment, usually with someone watching over newbies. Maybe there is some form of communal workshop where you could make your own decorations
@@ReginaRegenbogn Does not seem like it, no. It's either in Oslo, in Moss, or by NTNU, none of which are accessible to me :( But those look really fun, though!
My room is actually 100% what you were after, all dark antiques, most modern tech hidden or old itself.
So I truly relate.
Also I too love beautiful picture frames.
Love that colour on your walls.
Ps the gaming chair in Chesterfield style exists, it's called a captains chair.
Martina, I am never not amazed by the transformation in your projects. It’s a very classy, impressive, painstaking attention to detail! I love it all! You and Hans really complement each other!
Congratulations on your engagement Martina. Hansi room got incredible change and I love it so much to have one styled room like this. Just the perfect way to get ideas to live. I love wood working.
used the space really well! it doesn't look cramped at all considering the amount of stuff you managed to fit in such a small space. amazing work!!
I know, right? I magically looks bigger than before.
27:47 Hansi has a sick Pokemon video game collection… A man of culture haha.
I love the mix of old and modern, like that art piece in the old frame and the pokemon games in the cabinet and the books and LED and all the tech stuff with the lights... so awesome.
The final room is gorgeous, I loved seeing all the details coming together. I'm so excited about the Cryptic merch sets; pre-ordering the black set (the white is beautiful, but I'm always around animals and white clothes inevitably don't stay white for very long)
Looks really nice! My only wish is that you would've gotten a Samsung The Frame TV to hang above the fireplace and made a custom frame for it. It would've really taken the room to the next level!
seems samsung did not want to sponser the video.😉 But indeed would be a nice touch!
Something like that was plan... we just couldn't sink more time into the build for our own sanity 😅
@@Nerdforgeyou could just add trim pieces to the tv with mounting strips tmeporarily to try it !
0:32 fiancé? Congratulations you two!
They have been together a long while
They've been engaged for over a year, lol. They posted on their Instagram when Hansi proposed.
13:12 preserving this blessed sound bite for future generations
I 100% agree with that
This room is amazing!!! ❤
I love your book collection!
Просто поражаюсь вашему бесстрашию.
Жаль что это видео всего 28 минут, а не 2 часа. Столько деталей, все их хочется рассмотреть.
Вы молодцы 💞
Absolutely perfect mix of aesthetic and useful.
I love that you customise each rooms of your house it's own style, always doing it completly, not just a small touch. That's great.
And yes, we all tend to underestimate the time these projects need.
We're slowly renovating our own house... With work schedule, with money issue,...some things are still on stand by. But we try to follow a 1year/ 1project planning. It just feel magical to make your home your own one step at a time.
Lovelovelove Hansi's BRIGHT pink kitty ear headphones ICON
Love the energy and style you guys bring, top tier! And the picture you found in the first second hand store with the two kids bring me so much childhood memories as we used to have the same picture in the old house I grew up in. Such a nice estetique of a gaming room. Only nitpicky gripe from my side is that the shelves needs MORE BOOKS. Mom and dad used to fill their shelves with old lexicons just to make the shelves look used. We never read the lexicons tho haha.
Caffeinated Martina (like in the intro) is the best 😅
*sits quietly doing unrelated work an hour later* 'Billy billy billy billy. Billy billy billy billy. Billy billy billy billy'. Dammit!
Silly Billy.
The Fireplace needs some copper accents. copper leaf maybe. would be great, and the patina will match the walls eventually. or brass to tie into the fixtures.
Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings series is such a good series and this room really captures the vibe. Awesome job!
I love how you have that image of The long Library in Trinity college on the screen in the big reveal. I spend a lot of time sitting in that library with a cup of coffee reading in a corner.
i love how you worded that ❤
but bro had that peak male living style room. THE GREATEST AESTHETIC MAN CAN LIVE IN
Whatever doesn't improve FPS is just not necessary. Ha ha. Slab of wood on some bricks style. Minimalistic.
you know what they say, happy wife happy life.
Something I will never understand lol it feels so cold and institutional. A room with absolutely nothing it it is torture to me
@@slav-monke he will be less happy when it comes to time when he has to de-dust everything.
@@darkestpassenger. wdym nothing in it? There is literally everything you need
I think you just invented Dark IKEAcademia.... :-) The room looks great!
13:34 Undress me like one of your French shelves.
you are probably one of my favorite yt channels that i dont watch often because i enjoy the content but also become kinda sad that i cant do these things cause of no time, money and space.... i wish i could have found this passion of mine about building things sooner. also the new merch looks amazing probably gonna order a set! keep up the good work and live the dream for us also.
Decanter is the perfect word.
It's very old fashioned, but, then, so are the silhouettes of the decanters.
There may be a new name for them these days, but, in bygone eras, like the ones depicted in every Dark Academia furnished room: decanters (because, one decants a beverage into them, from which to fill people's drinking vessels of choice, usually glasses)
Anyway, I love your videos & enthusiasm & details
Congratulations on the engagement 🎉
(Regardless of how long ago it happened, congratulations, nonetheless)
Also, thank you for sharing your life and projects with us
Such a great build!
Anyone else paused at 27:22 to check what books do they have there?
Paused and zoomed in 😅
That green is so incredibly pretty, I am obsessed with the green!
Billy, the unsung hero! I love that bookshelf so much, it's so versatile! I used to love Kallax a lot, but man, Billy's are just perfect for display items and books.
It is also MUCH cheaper than other bookshelves. Just under 700kr if you want one of the short long fellas.
Martina has such next level chaotic goblin energy in this video, and I am totally here for it. Absolutely loved it, and the room looks fantastic!
Also:
I've already ordered the stealth hoodie and now I've seen that all the pieces have Tengwar line on it.
Well, I guess I just have to submit to my inner LotR nerd and buy them all.
Okay you have to do a short on how that drill bit ended up like that
This!! As a hobby woodworker, I had to pause when I saw that at 7:58 and come down here to find an answer for "HOW?!?!?"
It has to have over heated, and presumably be not the highest quality.
So here's the cool thing As you started adding your Billy's the acoustics in the room changed and it's really cool to hear that evolution of the change. Because when you're describing the plan for the fireplace I could hear a slight difference in the acoustics.
I'm expecting this will go hard as hell, the wizard room was so beautifully done
Your house will be a museum in 100 years. Mark my words. During the apocalypse people will tour it as a reminder of the world's past.
7:23 "Billy is just a bookshelf" I'd say Billy is is THE bookshelf
You do absolutely AMAZING things in pulling that all together into a cohesive and welcoming room. You inspire me to do the same with my office!
26:51 so sweet 🥹🥰
They are perfect soulmates
Your house is going to have a different theme in every room and that's very fun!
It's so beautiful, whimsical and cozy that it's actually dangerous, because I wouldn't want to leave this room ever
I agree, it's fabulous! But those curtains not only need steaming, they feel way too flimsy and a bit out of place in this room. Maybe thick velvet or something else that matches the overall vibe.
It looks magnificent, glad your love totally LOVES it.
2:50 As an electrician, hearing you call a chandelier/light fixture a “ceiling lamp” made me chuckle.
This girl has something called personality, which I have never been accused of. I think we all can learn about doing what you love and you will never work. Or, you can love what you do. Thanks for sharing!
7:59 wat?! why?! how?! Huh?! 🤯
Love the skull in the beginning lol 💀
It’s talking!!!!!!
