- Join us in this exciting episode as we explore the Old Forge Inn in Inverie, Britain's most remote pub. Our voyage takes us from the charming Mallaig to the scenic Oban, filled with reunions and unforgettable sailing experiences.
In Mallaig, we have a heartwarming reunion with Mark & Asha from Altor of Down, our companions from the Faroe Islands. The crew expands as we welcome Manu and Marvin on board the good old Polaris for a couple of unforgettable days at sea. Autumnal vibes surround us as we navigate the calm Scottish waters.
Our route unfolds, leading us around Ardnamurchan Point, the most westerly point of mainland Britain. The picturesque town of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull beckons us with its charm, and we continue our journey to the protected anchorage of Loch Aline through the beautiful Sound of Mull.
We catch our first prawn with our pot, adding a delicious twist to our sailing escapade. However, challenges arise when we blow a fuse on our anchor windlass. Breaking out and lifting our 33kg Rocna anchor on 10mm chain by hand becomes a tough task.
In Oban, after a few delightful days of sailing, it's time to bid farewell to our friends, Manu and Marvin.

Von Herzen Danke für die großartige, bereichernde, interessante und herzliche Zeit, die wir bei euch verbringen durften. ❤️
Any time again, Manu! ❤️
Lovely episode 😎😎😎
Thanks for watching!
Lovely episode and a lovely prawn! Watching this has made me itch to go sailing again on the west coast of Scotland! 😎
Another great video and a reminder of how useful an electric anchor windlass is, it is easy to forget!
Thank you Anton - yes, one gets used to the technology. This was a good case of solving a problem without…
We anchored in more or less that spot in Loch Aline. We are a little confused that our Bavaria (an older model than yours) does come with an anchor trip rather than a fuse. Having said that, when we "blew" the trip it was two months before we found it 😄
That is because we thought we had wrecked the windlass and it took us that long to work ourselves up to replacing such an expensive component! When we found the trip and flicked it the other way and everything worked.... we went out and bought a bottle of wine to celebrate 😆
Well, they probably found another few quid to economise towards cheaper production with a fuse…
But then, we are still super happy with our Bavaria. And once you know the devil, it‘s usually an easy fix.
I bet you were super relieved when you flicked the trip…
Loved Tobermory on our visit. We had the same tour guide who was really good. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. It brings back many great memories.
Thanks for watching Craig!
That's such a beautiful part of Scotland. We loved Tobermory and are returning there next May. Good to see the Old Forge. It's still on our list. Great video. Cheers!
Thanks Craig!
The Old Forge is great and now after the refurbishment even better. The kitchen wasn't just open when we were there but that should be sorted now.
Lovely video as usual. I love Oban, especially the shack on the waterside. Lovely scenery and really informative re the blown fuse. Happy sailing.
Thanks David!
Thanks for sharing. Recently found your channel. I am enjoying catching up with past videos. Nice work on the video editing and production. Keep up the nice work.
Thanks for watching and for your nice words! It means a lot to us!
Another great one.Great music also.
Thanks for watching Douglas!
I love it up around there , Tobermory is famous for its sunken Galleon and also for its whirlpool with the story of the Norwegian prince.
Thanks for watching! I wasn’t aware of these stories. Will have to check them out.
Yes it is known as the Corrywreckan whirlpool.
Love your Scottish videos but, and I don't want to nitpick but the true most westerly point is actually a few hundred meters further west and goes by the name Corrachadh Mòr. This point is located on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula itself, just over a kilometer south of Ardnamurchan Point.
Thank you for watching and for your comment. Of course you are right. It’s more westerly by 0.04‘. And it’s even marked by a cairn. Every day is a school day…
Anchor windlass shouldvhave a rcd fuse so you can just flip it back on when it blows due to overloading
Would be great if all of them had. Sadly, on our Bavaria that‘s how it‘s wired from factory… I expected to find a thermo-magnetic breaker as suggested by the windlass manufacturer, but that‘s not fitted…
Another great video. It’s a pity you didn’t have more time to explore the bays near Ardnamurchan point. Spent many years sailing in this area with my late father.
Thank you Jo! Nice to bring back fond memories to you! There are so many places to visit here… not enough time…
Hello again Sailing Polaris. I was wondering what you would recommend for cruising guides/pilot books for sailing around Scotland. I thought I noticed a brief glimpse of the CCC guides. Did you like and would you recommend them? Did you buy the Cruising Scotland book, or all of the individual CCC sailing directions for western Scotland? Sorry for so many questions!
Hi @LifeFourPoinzZero, no worries.
We use the CCC sailing directions and we like them.
Didn‘t buy the Cruising Scotland book but then also we have a subscription for Explore.Imray which gives you the content of all Imray books online and further info from the Cruising Association and the Navily app. An extremely valuable tool for the west of Scotland are the Antares Charts (unofficial, so your own judgment is required) on the Memory Map for All app.
Quite a lot of sources but together they give a great picture.
Thank you very much@@sailingpolaris ! I have not heard of Imray's Explore tool and I will definitely check that out. Fair winds!
I would have just put a piece of wire across the fuse! And no manual option on the windlass? That's unfortunate.
No manual option on the windlass, no.
You‘ll need quite a wire to withstand 100A and proper terminals, albeit just for a short distance… again, not something we carry on board…
👍🦘
Where does water come from for anchor wash thanks
We t-ed it off from the inlet hose of the fwd heads. There‘s a video on that:
