There was actually a movie made out of this. The judge was also sleeping with the wife, which is why it was an open closed case. “ the judge had blood stains on his hands”. The little sister is the one who killed them both. “ came upon some tracks to small for andy to make” the brother was hung before she could even confess. Great song. Love this one!

Grew up on country music, and Reba was a big part of my life. Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia ranks up there with one of my all time favorite songs, and every SINGLE time Fancy comes on it straight up guts me and renders me to tears. It's not a happy song, her mom knows her fate and the baby's, too poor to live. Makes a hell of a sacrifice to scrape everything together to get her that dress. Imagine how absolutely desperate the situation must be to send your own daughter to prostitution because that's an upgrade with real income, not for you own gain, but as a last ditched effort for SOMEONE to come out alive of that situation. Fancy both despises what her mother chose to do, but will still defend her mother from naysayers. It's such an emotionally complex story, and it renders me gutted every time

"Fancy" was actually written and performed by Bobby Gentry back in 1969, probably one of the greatest female singer-songwriter-storytellers ever. I love Reba, but if you love story songs, you simply MUST look up Bobby Gentry and listen to some of her songs such as "Ode to Billy Joe".

Her brother took the wrap for her, she told her story late in life. It shows love for your siblings having your back, Fancy- back in very rough financial situations, and sadly this was something back in the day, could you imagine, but she was strong and did whatever to not live that life handed to her. Great tune

If you guys haven't seen it there's actually a TV movie call The Night the lights went out in Georgia. I don't know if it was in theaters or not. It actually stars Dennis Quaid and Kristy McNichol so it was done sometime in the 80s.and one of the police officers is played by none other than Mark Hamill from Star Wars. You have to see it it's really good. And somebody who put Kenny Rogers Coward of the county, they did a TV movie of that one too with Kenny Rogers in it

The main reason Reba has become the icon/legend she is is directly related to her ability to find songs that are perfect for her. She's a huge fan of story songs and empowerment songs. Her songwriter credits are a very small percentage of her catalogue, and are not included in the songs you heard here, but she can spot a good song from Jupiter. You might enjoy "Is There Life out There" and "She Thinks His Name Was John," which was a powerful message in the 90s. "What If" also amazing.

"That's ONE body that'll NEVER be found, cause you see little sister don't miss when she aims her gun." Lyrics video need some work. ;p . Basically the husband came back to town, was told by his b-friend Andy that his wife was having an affair that night, and that Andy had been with his wife too. Husband was understandable angry, went home, got his gun, and went off to Andy's house to kill him, as his wife had "skipped town"(When his sister had already killed her , the tracks to small to be Andy's, and hid the body), but when he got to Andy's house, he found him already dead, shot the gun to get the cop's attention, and the cops just blamed him, and didn't bother to explore anymore, (in the official video, the bro figured it out, but motioned to his sister to stay quiet) and got the electric chair. So the song is the sister's confession!

Reba is an amazing artist. Her song "I'm a Survivor" helped my mom during her struggle with cancer. She has a TV show that my mom and I would watch together.
Since you like the story within the songs, have you thought of looking into Bluegrass or cowboy poetry? I highly recommend "The Night Our Paw Got Hung in that Electric Fence" or "If My Nose was Running Money Honey" by The Moron Brothers. The Bar J Wranglers are a very talented group as well. They do a mix of Bluegrass, Cowboy Poetry, and Yodeling.
