this is a cover of a 1972 song written by Bobby Russel and sung by none other than Vickie Lawrence...that's right Momma from Momma's Family. Returning home from a two-week trip to a place called Candletop, a man, identified only as "Brother", stops for a drink at Webb's Bar before going home to his wife. While there, he encounters his friend Andy, who informs him that Brother's wife has had affairs with both Andy and another man, "that Amos boy, Seth." Brother, angry and scared, goes home to find his gun, presuming his wife's continued absence was because she had left town, and quietly makes his way through the woods to Andy's house. On the way there he finds a set of footprints leading up to and back from the house, but they look too small to have been made by Andy. Arriving at Andy's back door, Brother looks through the screen and, to his horror, finds Andy's dead body. To get the attention of the Georgia State Patrol, Brother fires a shot in the air; the sheriff on patrol mistakenly assumes that the gunshot was the one that killed Andy and arrests Brother for murder. In a show trial, the judge wastes little time declaring Brother guilty of Andy's murder and then sentencing him to death by hanging, which is carried out in short order. The story wraps up as the narrator, revealing herself as Brother's younger sister, confesses that it was she who had left the footprints that her brother had encountered on his way to Andy's house, and that she had not only shot and killed Andy with her own gun, but the adulterous wife as well, in her case disposing of the body in a way that no one would ever find it. In the song's chorus, Little Sister blames the Georgia criminal justice system for Brother's death, warning the listener "Don't trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer, 'cause the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands."

I’ve been a Reba fan my whole life, literally, and this is a great song, but she didn’t write it. She didn’t even sing it first. Vicki Lawrence sang it back in the day.
I still have difficulty wrapping my head around the fact the first version of this was recorded by the woman who played Eunice's Mama on the Carol Burnett Show (as others mentioned, Vicki Lawrence).
I was a radio announcer in Country radio starting in the late 90s when parents were freaking out because their kids were listening to "Gangsta" Rap at the time. It was actually kind of a big deal during that era. I used to make fun of what I referred to as "Violent Gangsta Country" when I played this song, as well as several Johnny Cash tunes and going all the way back to Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell! I would say to my listeners, "Yeah, Rap tries, but we have the market CORNERED where it comes to sex and violence!" It didn't always make me popular, but it sure made people think! To this day, I challenge you to show me the poetic difference between Merle Haggard and Dr. Dre! It's the stories of people who have seen some serious shit! That simple.
In middle school we all leard square dancing, and one of the first songs we learned how to dance to was Copperhead Road, re-listend to it a while back and realized it's a song about generational moonshiners running and killing government men and their grandson growing weed instead of making moonshine fighting off the DEA with guerrilla tactics he learned while in vietnam and violent ptsd lmao
Lol excellent! Kinda like when they called the white Hurricane Katrina survivors rummaging through stores “foraging” but the black survivors were “looting”. When are we gonna grow up as a nation?
I've also noticed several requests for Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley & Allison Krauss. That is on of the greatest & saddest country songs ever written but it would be a great reaction video. If you're gonna do country, that song definitely needs to be on the list!
"The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" is a Southern Gothic song, written in 1972 by songwriter Bobby Russell and sung by (his then wife) Vicki Lawrence, an American pop music singer, actress, author and comedian (co-star on The Carol Burnett Show). Lawrence's version, from her 1973 Bell Records album of the same name, was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. In addition to several other renditions, the song was again a hit in 1991 when Reba McEntire recorded it for her album For My Broken Heart. McEntire's version was a single, as well, reaching number 12 on Hot Country Songs. Released as a single in June 1972, the song would ultimately become a number-one success for Lawrence, topping the Hot 100 chart in early 1973. Lawrence was, at the time, a regular performer on the ensemble variety comedy television show The Carol Burnett Show; on the final episode of the sixth season (March 24, 1973), Burnett surprised Lawrence by presenting her with an RIAA gold record for over a million copies sold. The song also scored number six on the Easy Listening chart, and it peaked at number 36 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart. It was number one for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and was finally topped by Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree". Billboard ranked it as the No. 11 song for 1973. In Canada, the single version scored number one, as well, topping the RPM 100 national singles chart on May 5 of the same year.On the RPM Country Singles chart, it reached #25.
Vicki Lawrence is the original singer singer of this song. If you don't know who she is watch The Carol Barnett show or Mama's Family. She plays Thelma Harper.
Yes this is a cover of Vicki Lawrence's song from the 1970's. Yes the same Vicki Lawrence who plays Mama in Mama's Family! This song is brilliantly written...
I like that Reba had done a cover of the song and more folks can appreciate it, but I think the original done by Vicki is more haunting. Beautiful and yet eerie and sad.
This song has a pretty cool history. Vicki Lawrence, of The Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family, first made it famous. Her first husband, Bobby Russell, was the songwriter. Vicki Lawrence took the song to number 1 in 1973 and received a gold record. Surprisingly, as popular as it is among fans, Reba's version peaked at number 12 on the Billboard charts. I personally love Reba and am grateful to you for noticing the lyrics above the music. She has always been one to want to tell a great story through her songs so that she may connect with her audience and is very selective in that category.

Love watching you guys discover each of these songs because I had almost the exact same reactions to every country song you've featured. It's reminding me a lot of my journey into country music. I moved to Georgia from Long Island, NY when I was 14 and became immersed in pop-country of the time, but as I've gotten older I've really gravitated more toward the classic stuff and I love it. Your videos are great. I just found you guys today (2 years after you made this video) and I'm looking forward to learning about other genres other than country by watching your videos.

When people say country lyrics are bland, formulaic, or "simplistic" songwriting i play them this. Its the perfect example of the "storytelling" vibe you only get from country.
Huge fans of what you guys do, I’ve been a loyal free thinker ever since the Stapleton video went big. My biggest recommendation for you guys would be to check out Zac Brown Band, they are considered a country band but they can play just about any genre. I would recommend Colder Weather or Goodbye In Here Eyes, two very great very emotional songs.
Man, you guys need to listen to _"When I Call Your Name"_ by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless. So many good songs to recommend, it's hard to choose just one.
Glad you guys did this song. It's one of the best narrative songs of all time and even though it was a cover, Reba just killed it. This THE exact song that got me listening to Country music.
YALL. Great reaction as always! You’ve got to check out “The Highwayman” by outlaw country supergroup The Highwaymen. Also, you still need to give Amon Amarth another chance! “Twilight of the Thunder God!”
If you're going to listen to Fancy, you should really listen to the original version by Bobbie Gentry. She wrote it and performed it. If you've never heard Bobbie Gentry before, well let's just say you have to hear her for yourself.
Actually, originally a hit for Vicki Lawrence (from the Carol Burnett show) back in 1972, and written by songwriter Bobby Russell. Reba did it justice, but it will always be Vicki's voice I hear. Good job guys. :)
Just discovered your channel (thanks algorithm) and somehow it's two hours later and I should be asleep. Love your takes on these songs, I've gained a greater appreciation for some of my favorite songs because of you guys. I would be curious as hell to hear your thoughts on Jolene by Dolly Parton. Just thought I'd throw it out there.
Would like to see what you guys think of Craig Morgan. His song "Almost Home", to me, is one of the saddest songs, especially as I get a little older, and very visual. He has many good country songs but that is one of my favorites.
bflandragon90 Yeh, Kelly said this is why she is on the Voice vs. American Idol. Being on the Voice just made sense. She met her hubby after a duet with Reba, kinda neat they met that way.
LOL :D OMG just for fun I'd like to see you react to a Dolly Parton song. I mean seriously who doesn't know who Dolly is? That Working 9 to 5 movie. When I was growing up she was very popular. Country isn't really my genre, but she's so cute. :)
I love that half way through this became two FBI agents trying to solve a cold case. I died.

Al Grabar -- I was having a demonic possession of a human. Who repossessed me? Repro but never recreated. Good luck with that. Ha. Ha.
Al Grabar -- I just commented that! YEAH!!!
I suggested it a while ago. Cause you know they gonna like the devils funk groove. I always thought the devil won. 👍
VIM EXT yes 😁😁😁
He was in bind because he was way behind, he was willing to make a deal
When people say country lyrics are bland, formulaic, or "simplistic" songwriting i play them this. Its the perfect example of the "storytelling" vibe you only get from country.
Sitting here watching their reactions because I knew what was coming. This is a great song and I love your reactions!
Jamey Johnson, In color! You will dig it!
They saw ya buddy! Great song choice
Thanks fellas! Keep free thinking alive!
They have done this one
Nice one! Do some Stevie Ray Vaughan! Live version of Little Wing!
She lived in my town for years. She is a genuine person. Seriously love this lady.
Huge fans of what you guys do, I’ve been a loyal free thinker ever since the Stapleton video went big. My biggest recommendation for you guys would be to check out Zac Brown Band, they are considered a country band but they can play just about any genre. I would recommend Colder Weather or Goodbye In Here Eyes, two very great very emotional songs.
phillyphan11266 Colder Weather is so gorgeous! I’d click on that review so fast!
David Alan Coe - The Ride
all time classic
DAC. You never even call me by my name
Yes, do the ride
Great song
Hell yes.
The devil went down to georgia! *Charlie Daniels*
This has to be one of my all-time favorite Reba songs along with "Fancy" and "Why Haven't I Heard From You".
YES REBA!!!! Great choice guys.
I love watching you twos reactions to listening to songs for maybe your first time, or putting the face with the singer, etc..
one of my favorite songs since I was a kid.
Man, you guys need to listen to _"When I Call Your Name"_ by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless.
So many good songs to recommend, it's hard to choose just one.
Yes its a great song
Glad you guys did this song. It's one of the best narrative songs of all time and even though it was a cover, Reba just killed it. This THE exact song that got me listening to Country music.
You should react to Brad Paisley, Whiskey Lullaby
YALL. Great reaction as always! You’ve got to check out “The Highwayman” by outlaw country supergroup The Highwaymen.
Also, you still need to give Amon Amarth another chance! “Twilight of the Thunder God!”
How have yall not don Fancy by Reba? Your comments on that should be priceless
If you're going to listen to Fancy, you should really listen to the original version by Bobbie Gentry. She wrote it and performed it. If you've never heard Bobbie Gentry before, well let's just say you have to hear her for yourself.
Solid reaction guys!! Been a fan for about 7 months now!! I absolutely love this song. And Im glad you did too.
Marty Robbins, El Paso... he’s one of the best lyricists I’ve ever heard
I love that song
I've heard this song a hundred times but never got as much out of it as I did watching your reaction - Please keep doing what you do - I loved it!
PLEEEEASE react to Garth Brooks- The Thunder Rolls. Preferably the live version as it has an extra verse!!
Absolutely!! His song The Storm also gets to me hard!! 😢
Yes, please!
It does! It's AMAZING!
Yes! Please do this!
Tool - The Pot
Independence Day - Martina McBride
You guys should take a listen to Tim McGraw's "Don't Take The Girl" it is a heartbreaking story
Christopher Word I think they did
Guys, do Tool - The Pot, been a while since the last Tool video. Greetings from Brazil. Keep up the good work.
Rafael Latini yes please
Actually, originally a hit for Vicki Lawrence (from the Carol Burnett show) back in 1972, and written by songwriter Bobby Russell. Reba did it justice, but it will always be Vicki's voice I hear. Good job guys. :)
Man, I love this freakin' cchannel and open minds to listen to all kinds of music!!
You caught my attention with the Golden Knights hat! (FLEURY FAN HERE!) Now I can't stop watching, you're just so entertaining.
You want a good country music story song, you should react to Coward Of The County by Kenny Rodgers.
AshLee Warner You mean Kenny Rogers
Sheriff Israel?
One of my all-time favorites!
Oh my goodness! I just Love this song! Such a good one! I hope they take ur recommendation!
AshLee Warner great story!
I am SO HAPPPYYYYYY!!!!! To see this. Thank You!!!!! OMG this is the dream.
I probably haven't listened to this song in twenty years, and now I'm going have to listen to this song again. Thanks for that.
Since yall are doing Reba, listen to Fancy
Would like to see what you guys think of Craig Morgan. His song "Almost Home", to me, is one of the saddest songs, especially as I get a little older, and very visual. He has many good country songs but that is one of my favorites.
You might also try Jeanne C Riley’s Harper Valley PTA
YEESSS !!!
Love watching you guys break down songs. Gotta keep requesting "The Pot" by Tool. You're gonna love that bass line
George and Ryan:
Reba is Kelly Clarkson's step mom-in-law.
Missi Reason Kelly Clarkson's husband is Blake Shelton's manager
bflandragon90
Yeh, Kelly said this is why she is on the Voice vs. American Idol. Being on the Voice just made sense. She met her hubby after a duet with Reba, kinda neat they met that way.
I just love both yall and love your open minds!! Enjoy your reactions
LOL :D OMG just for fun I'd like to see you react to a Dolly Parton song. I mean seriously who doesn't know who Dolly is? That Working 9 to 5 movie. When I was growing up she was very popular. Country isn't really my genre, but she's so cute. :)
Love when you guys do country!
Just watch the music video. It lays it all out. One of the best ❤️
Blake Shelton Ol' Red
Or any Toby Keith song!!!
Ol' Red would be AWESOME! lol
They’ve already done one George Jones cover with Stapleton. If they do ol red it needs to be the original from George.
I love the wit of Ol' Red!
