I thank you for the experience of the hard okra. Please thank your mom for me. Everything was very helpful. This is my 2nd year of growing okra. God said everything he made is goof and i believe Him. God bless you.
Thanks for the info! I love that you're so "down home," and just use stuff that 95% of folks have. I almost said everybody has, but my left brain wouldnt let me 😂.
OMG! You did just blow my mind! I have okra, first time grower. I have no idea what I'm doing but you've taught me quite a bit that I'm going to be a bit more dangerous! hahahaha...... Thanks!
My grandfather always told me to strive to learn something new every day. Today it was about okra!! Lord knows I love some okra. Can’t wait to try these recipes. Hopefully our pickled okra recipes are different so I can try it to. Welp headed to check the garden before some much needed rain. Thanks man!!!
Oh My Lord.. Yer a GENIUS.. IT WORKS!! I Tried Steaming My Oversized Okra On The Stove For 2hrs. But Didn't Work, It Was Still Stringy & Woody.. Threw It In The Garbage. Thanks Bunches To Yer Mama and For Yer AMAZING Vid I Can Now Eat My Oversized Garden Okra.
Thanks for that tip. We went away for a week now my okra is huge. I am going to add the seeds and the stock they were cooked in and make a okra tomato and corn stew.
You can also dehydrate oversized okra pods (cut the end off first and season w/ salt & pepper or garlic pepper. 135 degrees for 10+ hours. They’re a healthy, crunchy, tasty snack
Could you do this in a dehydrator, or is oven the best? If you don't know, no shame! I just "inherited" a dehydrator and thought about using it instead of the oven. Also, do you literally cut the ends off amd leave them long, or do you cut them in rounds, or is it just up to preference. Thanks!
I think the trick to okra is plant alot, in different places throughout the garden and sit back... all of mine are about done, they'll be coming out soon. Ready for Fall, thank you for the comment and for subscribing. 👍
I love okra, but didn't have anyone to ask about when to harvest and how to use it other than cut up and fried or in soup or stew. Finding out about the seeds makes my day. Now I'm going to harvest the seeds from the ones that "get away from me in the garden" and enjoy the flavor that I love even more.
This is my second year of growing okra. I'm getting a little bit more experienced as time goes by. This year I had an overabundance of okra. Okra is very healthy also! Thank you for sharing!. We have a local University that puts out a community garden every year. This year there was so much okra left over it it went to waste until now! I can't wait to try your little trick in the microwave!!
That's awesome, wish this area had a community garden. The microwave works, but they can't be too big, just to where they're too hard to cut up easily. The longer you microwave them, the softer they get, that's what I found. 👍👍 Thank you for the comment.
Thank you (and your mama!) for the tips. I had planned to put the larger ones in gumbo I’m making, but wasn’t aware of the microwave trick. 😊Subscribed
Woaaaa 😮 I've been eating okra since the fifties and you just blew my mind and they, my plants grow to 12 feet here in Texas.💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾 thank you very much
Had to drop a thumbs up on this one. I'm going to try the seeds. That sounds interesting. The New Orleans Gardener does a live on tue and sun even 8pm est and the topic this sunday is Okra. I'm definitely going to mention the seeds. I'm about to google how to prepare the seeds. Thanks. Come over and join the live gardening chat.
The best thing I have found as I have continued toying with the Okra seeds, nuking them for 30-60 seconds makes them softer, so when I have canned them, they have been a little softer when eating them after canning.
@@DownHomeBackyardGardening Great info. I let some of mine grow to about 10” to collect seeds. Now I have something the seeds can be used for besides replanting. I have seeds that look like small peas. Because of okras tolerance for heat it’s definitely on my summer garden list again.
Use a potato peeler on thise spines, then, I'll bet I can pressure cook it soft in my insta pot! Gonna try today cause I got a lot of big ones and, no microwave...!
I do not know for sure, but I personally wouldn't chance it. I would check with a master gardener's hotline or your local university extension office to be sure.
All I can find on okra relish is basically using pickled okra as a garnish to a meal or dish. 🤔🤔 Does anyone out there have an idea about this question?
@@jonnooney7102 try it when the Pods are 4-6 inches, anything over that the Pods are normally too woody. Plus, it also depends on the type of okra... I've grown this Alabama red variety this year, and the Pods, even at 4 inches, are super woody. 🤦♂️🤦♂️

@darrellmayo9066 🤣🤣🤣 I'm not a hero, my mom came up with this microwave trick... she deserves the credit. 💯💯💯
This is actually some awesome tips. Now my wife won't get on me for the missed pickings. Thanks ✌️
Oh my goodness! That worked so well!!! Thank you and thank your mom.
Had some big okra I didn't want to go to waste. Glad I found this video! I'm gonna do the microwave then air fry tonight.
How are you air frying.. milk bath/egg bath and flour/corn meal, spray w veggie oil?

Nothing wasted when you use the seeds in the larger, woody pods. And the remains can go into the compost. Microwave hack, brilliant!
