    Thank you for this. Someone gave me a bag of okra and they were giant and when I cooked them, they were very woody and I thought I'd just thought maybe I baked it too long. Good to know they were just on the plant too long. ~Smile!

    Thank you so much! This is the first video that answers my question about me picking up okras that I grow and not liking them. I finally understand why.

    Ahhhhh I’ve been wondering about these bugs but too busy to try to figure out what they are. I didn’t like their keep away tactics. Thankfully I’ve had a lot of frogs on the okra hanging out so it’s rare now if I see one. Thank you so much for the video. Made another new sub today. God bless 👍🏻👍🏻

    Great video, thanks. What is the point of boiling them for 45 seconds? Is it just to soften them a little?

    • @CountryLivingExperience

      You’re welcome. Yes, to blanch them and warm them through to eat. Unless you like them raw and cold.

    I'm just starting my okra and didn't realize I was supposed to harvest it sooner. Another mistake I just made was the one that had fried out, I cut it already and put the seeds where the other stalk is. Do you think it'll grow next year? At least I know when to harvest and if I miss one just leave it until next year.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, okra really loves the heat of summer. The seeds may come up next year. Just put a layer of mulch over them and they should be fine.

      I planted a lot of okra on my garden this year. Because I only had few last year. I just harvested 4 pcs a while ago. I cooked my by steaming and nothing beat the fresh harvest okra. Thanks for the info on how to save the seeds for next year.

    So, my okra plants are MUCH smaller than these, they're still only maybe a foot and a half or 2 ft tall maybe? Not nearly as leafy either, yet. But they do have a couple okras popping up on them already that look almost big enough to pick - should I be leaving those alone? Or is it okay to pick them as it grows?
    The plants may be growing weird too, I'm not sure, because we got hit with a hurricane that destroyed the house and the garden, but somehow the okra plants are still kicking (and one pumpkin plant might produce a pumpkin or two still), all my squash and zucchini plants were trashed completely - but yeah, it's possible they're growing kind of weird as a result, I don't know.

    Thank you. Informative. Seed saving near the end of the growing season , right?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful. If you miss picking a few during the season and they are too tough to eat, just leave them to dry on the stalk. You should have plenty of seeds for the next season. Just one large pod has probably 60 seeds in it.

    I have okra that is the right size for picking but still has flower wrapped around tip. Should i clip or wait til flower is completely gone?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are they all like that? You may have a variety that just grows bigger if they are. If not, then just pick off the flower and enjoy.

    • @pinkorganichorse
      @pinkorganichorse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CountryLivingExperience thanks for replying! Many are like that. I picked bigger ones that looked more ready but keep hearing that it's better to pick them smaller. I'm thinking my variety may just be bigger.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pinkorganichorse Sorry, I have not had any experience with that variety. My best advice is to experiment. Wait for them to grow larger and the flowers to drop off, then test to see how tender they are when cooked. Try several different sizes.

    Interesting I have never eaten okra before. Do you grow enough food to cut down on your groceries?

    • @CountryLivingExperience

      Okra is good and good for you. We have seen a big impact on our grocery bill. I would say that we have had at least a 25% reduction for the past 2 months.

      Oh I could never do that, it would be too restrictive a diet to follow especially if you eat out occasionly or go to friend's house for dinner. xmas without the turkey would drive me crazy but if it works for you good.

    • @CountryLivingExperience

      You would be surprised at the variety of foods and things you can eat. I used to think as you do. I was a steak and potatoes guy and a real foodie. I had a real eye opening experience when the evidence of what meat and dairy do to your body was presented to me. Check out Walter Veith's Life At It's Best series and Barbara O'Neil here on TH-cam. Eye opening for sure!

    Can you tell me how the okra grows? I just started out growing it and I want to know does the flower grow into a okra or what’s the point of the flower ?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The okra is the bottom part of the flower. It develops mostly after the flower drops off.
