Yes I trim my okra plants in a similar fashion. This improves airflow between the plants and also makes it easier when harvesting the okras.

With them trimmed back you can see those copper heads, or what ever type snake you don't want to come across.

been doing this for years. also easier on your back when harvesting. when the plant gets taller than i can reach i cut the top out and nurture a side shoot as a new plant.

I'm in Aridzona, if it grows I just let it go. Older pods become seeds for next year. We get like 3 inches of rain per year. I'm on a well and can pump enough for my small garden.
Guess Im about as country as you. Grandma said okree I say Okree and you say okree.
I save the larger older pods for seeds!

@@gardeningwithhoss No, Thank YOU! 😄I'm in zone 7, last year I tried to grow Okra too late so no okree to eat, the frost killed the plants, this year I did too early, all those seeds are probably dead, but I still have more seeds so I just direct sowed some again yesterday, keeping my finger crossed, first time Okree grower. We love listening to your southern accent saying "okreee" 😆 and we love eating okree too.. lol.
I trim my Clemson Spineless the same way, works out great for me.
My clemson spineless didnt get that huge.....maybe i should till the soil
I do mine that way this yr. I've noticed more at one time at the top.i planted Clemson spineless also
Stressing the plants tends to make the plant produce more pods. Improvement in airflow has to be better.

Can okree plants be added to the compost pile or will it cause disease issues like with nightshades?
Okra plants really don't have any disease issues, besides nematodes in the soil. You can compost them. Just make sure your compost pile gets good and hot. Those okra stalks are tough and fibrous and can take a while to decompose.

For the past two years I will only plant okra on an outside row of my garden so that it's easier to pick and I itch less after.
Just watched a video where guy said u can roast the okra seeds and use as coffee substitute.. wondering if those big hard okra have seeds that could be used like this? Curious curious ♡ ☕️

I wonder if Clemson Spineless is really spineless? That's what we always plant and okra spines don't bother me too much- no long sleeves.

The pods are spineless, as most modern-day varieties are. Clemson Spineless is an old variety and many of the modern-day hybrids include that spineless trait. Never heard of an okra that had spineless leaves.
Hey Travis...My okra is getting dirt or ant feces or something all over the blooms and pods. Have you seen this before? I never have but this is the first time I've had a garden here in south Georgia only about an hour from you guys.
Ants will feed on aphid residue. You can spray them with spinosad and it should take care of the issue.

I prune mine back to single leader for efficiency sake on my farm. I grow Clemson spineless and transplant them. I tried Jambalaya about 3 years ago and the pods don't snap off, Is that normal for Jambalaya? Clemson Spineless snaps right off and I can pick 700' of row in 15-20 minutes.
Our Jambalaya always snaps. Longer pods can be more difficult, but Jambalaya is best picked at 3-4" long.
