    Why do you need a false bottom in one of those coolers? I thought a false bottom was to stop the grains it bag (biab) from touching the hot base or electric element?

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      False bottom is to filter out the grains from the wort when not using a BIAB. If your doing BIAB in a cooler (can't add heat) you don't need one. If your adding heat to a kettle and doing BIAB you want a taller false bottom, almost like a small shelf for the reason you stated.

    Theese coolers seems very popular to convert to mashtuns. Cheers

      I love using these coolers, Keep temperatures consistent without additional insulation like a kettle would need.

    So how did that false bottom work out for you? Does and grain get around it?

      Works well, haven't had issues with it. Just make sure you don't hit to too much when stiring.

    I just built one of these and cannot get a perfect seal on my ball valve. Can anyone who's built once recently give any pointers?

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did the original come with a rubber for the original spigot?

    • @Ryan_Mooney
      @Ryan_Mooney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MoskiHomebrew yes, that's on the inside where it was originally, I have a metal washer and nut snugged against it very tight

    • @Ryan_Mooney
      @Ryan_Mooney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I think nothing is sealing the outside of the metal fitting that leads to the ball valve, not very well at least. The part that goes through the center of the stock rubber washer

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      TH-cam doesn't make it easy to send photos but we have another washer on the outside along with the jamb nut to compress it a bit.

    • @Ryan_Mooney
      @Ryan_Mooney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MoskiHomebrew yeah I have one on the outside too, so it's sandwiched super tight. May try loading up with teflon and see what happens. Though, I am probably losing only less than a teaspoon of wort over a 60 minute interval, but I'd like it sealed

  • @StagArmslower
    @StagArmslower 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually silicone the channel for the drain before installing original seal so insulation is not being soaked with worth

    I bought the same cooler kit for the Rubbermaid cooler from Brewhardware. After install It looked watertight BUT water was leaking between the cooler walls. I drilled a small "Weep" hole under the valve just through the outer wall making sure not to damage the inner wall and sure enough, water started draining out ....not good. It seems the hole size of the cooler was too big and even with the smaller guide washer it would not make a good seal. Brewhardware recommended the weep hole and I'm glad because having mash sugars between the cooler walls would not have been good. I ended up drilling a 1" hole with a stainless bulkhead from Amazon and I used the BH kit on my small 5g igloo.

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Through our install and testing, the BH kit says to remove the Rubbermaid gasket, but we have had the best results using the white gasket that the cooler originally came with. The BH kit tries to replace it but each time we tried it would leak.

      @@MoskiHomebrew I did notice you guys built this bulkhead system two different ways on two videos. What procedure/materials do you like better?
      Thanks for the fast response. Cheers

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the Brew Hardware setup because the "bulkhead/nipple" is all threaded. Just needed to make sure to use the white gasket to seal up the inside and we were good. The false bottom i have mixed feelings about, we previously used a ss mesh screen from a faucet, and never had any issues no matter how many times you hit it with the spoon doughing-in or what-not. Now we have to make sure we dont hit the false bottom because it could lift up a little, allowing grain to get under and cause a major stuck sparge (its happened before).

    Are you from Indiana? I see the 3 Floyds bomber on the bottom shelf, but it looks like there is a 450 North can on the top shelf.
    Edit: Nvm, just saw the intro video on your channel. Awesome stuff! I'm going to start streaming my brew days on Twitch and uploading to TH-cam after I get my system set back up. (been in an apartment for 2 years so I haven't been able to brew)

      @MoskiHomebrew  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! Nice let us know when you get that started! I know what it's like to live in a apartment, and not be able to easily brew. Up until about a year ago we didn't brew in Indy, now we can! Cheers!

      Moski Homebrew I’m still in an apartment so I’m going to weigh out of the differences of doing 1 gallon or 5 gallon partial boils. I do have a question for you, what kind of video equipment do you use to shoot your videos?

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also consider 2.5 or 3 gallon partial boils.. same work just a bit more beer in the end. We use a lot of equipment What specifically are you looking for?

    • @DrunkCookies
      @DrunkCookies 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moski Homebrew specifically, the type of camera you use. I’m going to have to start just by using my phone to stream/record, but I eventually want to get a nice camera to do that for me

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We both have cannon 80D cameras. What you'll probably find out is that the on board dslr audio amps are horrible, so you will either need and amplifier or recorder. We've been doing the TH-cam channel for 4-5 years now, and the camera stuff is as much of a rabbit hole as the brewing equipment 😂

    What was the total price of the building this setup vs buying a pre-built system

    • @MoskiHomebrew
      @MoskiHomebrew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check out the links in the description.. The prebuilt mashtun costs about $230, and it just depends on what parts you use. The final cost of the one we built was about $180-200 but we also have a better ball valve, thermometer, and false bottom than you would get in a kit. Jut depends on how handy you are and what your willing to spend! cheers.

    you should have bought some spray foam to spray around your thermometer to protect the integrity of your insulation.And it would kind of super glue it in place.

And I suppose if you are going to brew your own beer you probably find some enjoyment from building your own equipment.
