Holy crap!! This guy is still alive. I never clicked so fast. This brings back memories. I remember watching your 2012 Honda Civic Si video. It’s great to see you back, Ross.
Just an excellent review much of which I'd second. But here's a slightly different perspective. Earlier this year I set out to replace my Stage I tuned Mk6 2013 Autobahn GTI. Until I purchased that car I'd driven for more than 40 years and always had at least one manual transmission vehicle in the garage. But at my wife's request I opted for the DSG option (She sometimes used the car for commuting in Seattle's horrendous traffic). I quickly discovered, though, that the DSG "automated manual"(and thanks for accurately calling it that)offered the best of both an MT and an automatic transmission. In its automatic mode the car provides better performance than a manual. In its manual mode it provided an experience equivalent to driving with a manual gearbox. (That's because it IS a manual transmission.) It simply shifted more quickly than any human. I loved my MK6, especially after it had an APR Stage I tune. But I'll soon be sharing my car with my teenage daughter and like many parents I liked the safety and convenience features offered in recent models. I'd driven Golf R's on several occasions and was enamored. So I looked diligently for one at every dealer within 500 miles of Seattle. I soon discovered that VW had limited deliveries to only the number of "R's" for which dealers had prior deposits. Altogether I found only four R's available on eight dealer lots. (Vehicles that had been rejected by those who had put down a deposit before delivery.) Of those four vehicles only one was available at MSRP of approximately $41K. Each of the others had "market adjustment" stickers of at least $2000 added to the MSRP. (That one MSRP priced R sold within 24 hours of its arrival at the dealer.) It's worth noting, by the way, that the availability problem hasn't eased on the West Coast. Cars.com shows only 4 R's currently for sale within 1000 miles of Seattle. At that point I looked more seriously at the GTI. The R has some obvious advantages: performance, all wheel drive, and the digital cockpit primarily. But the GTI offered some benefits, as well. It's more nimble than the R. The weight of AWD adds the equivalent of an NFL linebacker sitting in the back seat. The AWD is undoubtedly a strong feature. But the 4Motion system only routes power to the rear wheels when it senses wheel slip. Otherwise, it's an FWD vehicle. In climates like the upper Midwest, New England, or Canada it might well be essential but while Pacific NW winters can be messy, they're not beyond the capabilities of FWD. The R's digital cockpit offers some very attractive eye candy compared to the GTI but I suspected it would be a novelty that faded in importance over time. The R's performance is intoxicating, even though its value can be felt only occasionally. Further, I knew from my MK6 that I could have the GTI tuned to offer (much) more than adequate performance at a reasonable cost. The R can be tuned, as well, of course. But I really couldn't see the point of a 400 HP Golf anywhere but on the track. Additionally, the Autobahn GTI has a sunroof, an option not available on the R. Not important to many folks but in rainy Seattle we can use all the light in an all black interior we can get. Finally, there was price. I purchased the GTI Autobahn/DSG for $32,043 plus TTL. That made it at least $10,000 less than the R. Had the difference been the $3000 or so difference in MSRP, I might have had a more difficult choice. But at $10K, it was an easy decision. I loved the R but I'm crazy about my GTI.
Awesome review thanks for taking to the time to make such a informative video. I just picked up my 2019 7.5R wagon and although I've been told there's no need for a break in period I'm resisting the urge to give it some berries till I reach at least 1000km (600 miles).
Adaptive Cruise and Collision Avoidance is built into the VW badge now. And the Headlights/Taillights are LED vs Xenon/Halogen on 15-17. But it's the inside massive tech upgrades and new DSG 7 speed that sells me. If you are looking for new try to get an 18 now while on sale, the 19s seem to all be delayed for a few more months.
Love the sunroof in my GTI. In the rainy Pacific Northwest it's a huge deal. Likewise the fog lights in the GTI are welcome in our foggy weather. Memory seats? Yeah, I'd like to have them, too.
Manual in the R is great in all but the absolute worse stop and go traffic. Very easy and smooth in the city. Service and maintenance and repair and initial cost is much cheaper too. It is of course slower in a straight line than launch control that shifts for you, but if you shift the dsg yourself on a road course, either could win, with the driver being the main reason. Manual will have lower weigh, higher top speed, less weight in corners and braking by a small amount, dsg will have lightning quick shifts, but on most courses, it's not how fast you shift as much as shifting at the right time and in the right gear for each section. I do wish the manuals would also get upgraded to 7 speeds, with rev matching, no lift throttle, anti stall and other advancement s made instead of basically the same manual from 20 years ago.
this was a great video. one thing, it is stated the R has no foglights due to brake vents, but the GTI SE now has the R brakes, and the foglights. in any case, love my GTI SE.
He’s correct. You get the daily usability with both cars and the performance isn’t that far off from a base 911. Obviously if your talking about a GT3 or a Turbo it’s not even close, but those cars cost a few hundred grand more. I’ve known 911 owners that have swapped for GTI or Golf R’s.

Ten years ago I switched from an SI to a GLI and have never looked back. VW’s are so much nicer than Honda’s. The big issue with VW has been the warranty but now that’s resolved. Sometime next year the new GLI is coming out finally based on the MQB platform and identical engine as the GTI (not detuned). If it comes with the digital dash and safety systems I’ll get one. Yes the shifts in a DSG are lighting quick but for some reason it doesnt give me the satisfaction a manual does. My daily commute does not have crazy traffic, nothing but country roads so I am almost certain i will be getting a MK7.5 Golf R 6MT
Just wondering: does the manual trans on the Golf R rev match? Also, does its engine still have probs w/ carbon buildup on the valves due to the direct injection?
l'll be buying a car this summer, stuck between civic type r or golf r, practicality important, and ctr's boot and interior space better than golf r? only thing that puts me off is it only has 2 seat belts in back seat, so illegal for 3 to sit on back. yep ctr looks are a bit loud, but reliability, driveability ad practicality go in it's favour?
From your personal experience, how is the ride quality when in comfort mode? How noticeable is the difference in harshness when switching to sport/race mode? I'm thinking of buying one soon and this is one of my main concerns right now (I've yet to test drive). I've never driven a smaller car with 19-inch rims either, and so I'm also curious how that affects the ride quality as well. Thank-you!

Time out! “Not meant for the race track” Totally disagree - and agree. Straight out of the box - it’s not a track car, but with a Stage l APR, Stoptech Brakes, and a Wavetrac Dif (it’s a Manuel if course) the car performances superbly. And when you’re done, you slip back on the highway and no one is the wiser!
Point well taken. If track time performance combined with daily driving and performance on public roads is a high priority, the R is hard to beat. It all depends on how important track time is to you.

@@tomw485 True. but that's not what he said. He said you can sneak it by etc. Who sneaks anything by??? Just be straight up about why you like the car and why you want the car. (sigh) I don't consult my wife about my wardrobe. She doesn't wear my clothes. However, she sometimes drives each of the cars in the family, just as I do. And it's for that reason that we consult one another when making a family purchase. The fact that you feel your status "as a man" is somehow threatened unless she "respects (you) enough" says a lot about your attitudes.
wait, hold the phone, the RS3 is a 5 cylinder, but the s3 is definitely a golf R power train, no? did i miss something huge where they came out with a detuned 5 cylinder???
Not even close. The RS3 has the 2.5L 5 cylinder turbo making 400 horsepower. Same engine as the TTRS. Good luck finding one too, selling at MSRP, nicely equipped for 63K. It’s a total sleeper, if I could afford one I’d get it in a heartbeat.
I’m 38 too but I chose the RS. Your knowledge on these cars is a bit lacking considering this “review”. The rear overheating “issue” is essentially “fake news” and the manual or “old style” transmission as you call it was the appeal, not the drawback for those like me who like to connect with a car. The VW 4Motion Haldex AWD system is essentially a FWD system with a rear drive when necessary. The RS’s torque vectoring rear will oversteer the car predictably in all driving modes and is far more of an entertaining drive than the R. I think though the weakest part of your argument is the practicality of the R vs others. It’s no different inside than an RS and no more practical in everyday use. Some complain about the RS’s ride or the “loud” popping and gurgling exhaust note. At the end of the day I guess those who are 38 years OLD buy the R, and those who are 38 years YOUNG buy the RS. So enjoy your automatic transmission and boring styling while I drive sideways around you. PS- you might want to learn how to pronounce “Tiguan” correctly if you’re doing a VW video...

Mr. Rapoport is back so I re-subscribed.
HondaPro Jason’s brother?
uh apparently Ross is BALLING OUT OF CONTROL. Look at that Grib!
My understanding is cam chain notorious for stretching, causing some expensive repairs. Any truth in this?
following..
I want to buy one, but I'm afraid my hair would fall out if I did.
Roadfly back from the grave👻👻👻👻
ross what happened to your hair? i remember you had a head full of hair reviewing the m3 10 years ago
too bad, no sunroof and no fog light
Haha. That’s how I convinced my partner to get the car.
where’s amy?
That digital dash looks so Windows XP!
I would prefer the car in a 2 door like my 07 GTI.
Manual all the way.
It’s not boring it’s called refinement
If I had a dollar for everytime this guy said um I could pay for the car.
Too bad it doesn't have a sunroof option
I drive an 06 Audi A3 and yeah the Golf R is so much nicer, my next car is gonna be an R!
What happened to this guy?
Ross is like a tamed version of honda pro jason.
Still has that annoying Lisp.
Sounds like it isnt worth it.
Wow....Ross is a little man.... he once bragged he has ling legs....yet, he barely taller than his Glof R.... so he's not tall at all... He's a tiny guy
Fog lights are useless
Anyone else annoyed by the "host" (the guy with the camera) with his noisy nose breathing? He needs some Claritin or something..lol
Thumbs down for being so whipped you have to beg you wife for permission to do ANYTHING. C'mon dude
@@tomw485 No I am, but she respects me enough as a man that I don't have to grovel or tip-toe around her. Seriously pathetic
@@tomw485 True. but that's not what he said. He said you can sneak it by etc. Who sneaks anything by??? Just be straight up about why you like the car and why you want the car. Implying you HAVE to be less than truthful or bend the truth to get what you want means that you're whipped and there is a problem in your relationship. It's ok though, if you notice (friends, family, associates) lots of guys talk like this....then go on to talk about how they're henpecked etc. It's just really disappointing
Like all VW these are a POS ! these reqire lots of maintence , at low km's , timimg chains , etcetc
No an S3 is 5 cylinder. Not the same.
Yes, the current S3 has the 5 cylinder. The Golf R is using the previous gen S3s engine. I think audi switched in 2017.
wait, hold the phone, the RS3 is a 5 cylinder, but the s3 is definitely a golf R power train, no? did i miss something huge where they came out with a detuned 5 cylinder???
@@japitalianish S3 is 4 Cylinder , RS3 is the 5 , you didnt miss anything ;)
S3 has the same drivetrain, RS3 has the 5
Not even close.
