2018 / 2019 Volkswagen Golf R Review and Comparison

  • VW's Golf R (or Golfer as I kept calling it) is not the fastest hot hatch in America, nor is it the best handling or arguably the best value. But if my cash were on the line, it is the hatch I'd buy. Why? Let's explore that. Note: The 5.6 second 0-60 time quoted was the best time we could get after we shot this video and then did back to back runs testing different launch techniques.

    I drove a MK7 GTI with DSG like I stole it for 4 years and 50k miles and it was bulletproof. Similar story for my brother's R and my wife's A3. It's a solid platform if you do the maintenance. The DSG elevates the car both in it's sense of immediacy and in the amount of power it can handle with a tune. The engagement you lose is more than made up for in modding potential, in my opinion.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      frumpd63: Same story here. I'd driven for 40+ years without ever having at least one MT car in the garage. In 2013 I purchased a GTI with DSG at my wife's urging so she could occasionally commute in the hell of Seattle traffic without too much aggravation. I quickly found that the flexibility of the DSG far outweighed the testosterone charge I had gotten from a manual transmission. When I replaced the MK6 GTI with a 2018 version I didn't think twice. When I drive in the twisty roads of the Cascades I put the transmission in manual mode and drive it just as I would a stick. And when I'm stuck in interstate traffic zipping along at 5 to 30 mph for what seems like hours, I let the DSG do its thing. Overtaking when the trans is in "D" is as simple as using the paddle to downshift. What do I miss? Well, there is the thrill of shifting into first gear when I come to a stop. The DSG does that for me even when I'm in "M" but I've gotten used to losing that "thrill."
      P.S. When I added an APR tune to my previous GTI, the technician said, "Well, now we don't have to have the talk about annual replacement of your clutch."

Ya can't launch a FWD car very well if you're pushing 400+ ponies unless you like wheel spin and a worn clutch. My '18 DSG R is still a "virgin" but plenty quick for my taste for now. The golf r is the only choice for me. Easily tunable to around 340/350 BHP with just a remap and an uprated foam pannel filter e.g. pipercross. Not much more than $500 all in. I have seen some with over 500 BHP (See HPA, APR etc) with stock internals. I love the Jekyll and Hyde personality to it, especially with a little investment to unlock the performance.

      Yeah, VW's with the 2.0T get good millage on the highway. I've owned a few. But if you like to drive sporty most of the time and live near a city then the mpg is going to suffer. I'd just like to see VW make the gas tank a little bigger that's all.

    The very fact that Honda dealers can *consistently* sell, every single 6MT Type-R they get into the US, at or above MSRP, is a testament to the fact that it does not (and personally, should not !) come with any semblance of an Automatic shifter. It *is* sacrilege, as you stated !
    But your comments on the terrible tack-ons on the Type-R body, making it a stylistic disaster, is absolutely spot-on. Also, if they introduced a version of the SH-AWD into the Type-R, that would have made it my top pick, among these alternatives.......I can even forgive the tacky plastics on its body.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aesthetics aside, have you noticed that everyone refuses to compare this to mainstream RWD platforms? A Golf R really can't fit any more into it than a Mustang GT, but in the rare cases where you see a Type R or Golf R pitted against a 50/50 weight distribution RWD vehicle with more horsepower, you see how they don't stand any chance of keeping up on the track. And the Mustang for example actually has a softer more comfortable suspension than either R, and even has air-conditioned seats. Now, some may sell "well the V8 is thirsty", but remember that the Ecoboost is also an option, still out accelerates and out handles the hot hatches, and yet gets 32mpg. Heck, unlike the Type R and Ecoboost, the Mustang is even rated to tow 1000lbs in the US (which has stricter 12% grade requirements than Europe for towing).

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You consider the stiffly sprung subcompact Golf R to be a good people hauler? Clearly I was referencing 2-occupants + luggage/things. There isn't much difference between the two in that respect, since the Mustang has quite a large trunk. And if you really want a true comfortable 4/5 person vehicle that's sporty, I would get a Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack instead (which in fact, my dad did). Being based on a fullsize Mercedes sedan chassis with nearly 500hp and equal amounts of torque means its very comfortable and well appointed and with its heated and ventilated big seats and fullsize rear seats with a nice trunk will be much better at the task and at 12.6 seconds in the 1/4 mile (almost a second faster than the Golf R) while still having understated subtle styling and IMO a far more entertaining rumbly exhaust note from the 6.4 liter V8 with hands down one of the best non dual-clutch transmissions in the world.

    I was fortunate enough to purchase my dark gray Type R last month in Northern CA for MSRP. Although aesthetics are subjective, I only appreciate the exterior in my chosen color. It reminds me of my 2005 S2K, except it's practical, which is a benefit since I am a parent.
    I am mostly agnostic when it comes to cars, with the exception of classic muscle cars, which does not resonate with my tastes.

    Type R has one more con - transmission issue. Clutch mechanism (hydraulic) overheats if you drive for too long, fluid boils and as a result even if you press (clutch) pedal to the metal it won't fully decouple. Gear changes are no longer smooth, premature transmission wear&tear is also one of the side effects. Honda doesn;t cover it under the warranty.

      DCT’s aren’t for everyone. But give one a try. You might find out how fun they are. Most of the cars I’ve owned have been manuals, but I chose the DCT option when I bought my GTI and have never regretted it. I can choose to put it in full automatic mode and not think about shifting or I can put it in ‘manual’ mode and get lightning fast, perfect shifts at my command.
      Looking to replace my aging GTI, I got excited when I saw several end of year deals on Golf R’s. However, they were all 6-speed manuals. If you really want a manual Golf R, there might be a few great deals left on 2018’s.

    I bought a Golf R and I think you basically nailed why Alex. It is my only vehicle and I needed something that could basically do it all but was still compact for regular city driving and living. The Civic Type R was actually my second in the market, WRX STI third, and Focus RS last. Why? Because the Civic was close to the Golf's practical nature and did drive very lovely but I need AWD for winter and frankly I just think the Type R is ugly. Plus I'm a big guy and fit best in the Golf. In my ranks the STI and RS were much further behind. I find the STI just a bit more livable than the RS. The Focus RS was a real disappointment, brutally stiff riding car, I couldn't live with it as a daily.

    I these are all fun choices. It's crazy they're even zippier than V8 sports coupes. I'd pick the Golf R as well, since my daily drivers have been hatchbacks, & I live on the hilly San Francisco peninsula. Having a Civic Type R with an auto & AWD would be nice (& hopefully more reliable), but that's like making a muscle car FWD. Not quite it's character. Then again, there's an AWD Challenger GT.

    Excellent review- however most of the comparison reviews of these 4 cars center on the "driving experience" -i.e. Steering feel, power etc and all of that must be looked at, of course. However part of the "driving experience" are the safety and MMI systems and operator interface. And here the GOLF R is Wayyyy ahead of the Honda and Ford- forget the STI. It is a combination of the Audi center all digital MMI (at a slightly lower resolution that is not a deal breaker.- and an Excellent VW touchscreen system in PERFECT reach and no scrolly ball. Screw the fingerprints on the slick glass- get a micro-fibre and call me in the morning. ALso you can have a screen view of the NAV map up in the all digital center binnacle ALL the time (Shows Traffic in real time too!) and to show around you and you DONT have to use your phone!- meaning your CAR PLAY or ANDROID AUTO is up on the 8" center screen- an absolute perfect blend of navigation, data and music (EXCELLENT, BUMPIN FENDER SOUND SYSTEM BTW) So for an EVERYDAY driver- with the excellent and complete set of driving aids, excellent interior- quietness, more than enough speed- a PERFECT place on the freeway, a winding country road or IN A TRAFFIC JAM! And EXCELLENT AC to cool you in the hot climates. Golf R - hands down best. However- even though the reviewer is ABSOLUTELY correct that this is the perfect DAILY driver. If I wanted a weekend cruiser... hands down the BMW M240 with my favorite the Autobox of course- but can get 6 speed also. That 6 cylinder- excellent seats Power to spare weekend perfection...yes it will cost more- but life is too short..forget the Transformer looking anime Civic or the Golf R. But for an everyday driver, under any condition, tight city or wide open country- the Golf R is as perfect as you can get. But VW for 40k why no folding mirrors? I mean really - it pisses me off and should be standard on this level of car. Many in Tight cities would buy this car, and those mirrors must fold. Id Pay extra!

  • @fighter835
    @fighter835 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Main reason why I bought a GTI and not an Si is the availability of an auto. Honda is losing tens of thousands of sales of both the Si model and the R because they refuse to offer a decent auto in it.

  • @stephenhendricks103

    Great review as usual, Alex. However, I think you might want to consult a physician about the lead that seems to be accumulating in your right foot. When you reported that you had gotten about 18 mpg in your recent "short review" of the 2018 GTI, I assumed it was because you climbed Mt. Hood and didn't come back down. But now you're reporting the same 18 mpg for the Golf R. Have you noticed you're listing to the right when you walk? You might want to have your right foot examined. :)
    Seriously, I realize that when you review a car it's important to test it in all sort of conditions and drive it more aggressively than most drivers do in daily driving. For example, I've averaged about 28 mpg in my 2018 GTI over the first 3000 miles and my previous MK6 with an APR Stage I+ tune averaged about 24 mpg in mixed driving. No criticism intended for your reported results but I think it's worth noting that your results are unlikely to be duplicated by an average owner. In the past you often mentioned that your test included commuting over the 2200 ft Santa Cruz mountains. I have a feeling that your more recent tests may be a bit more "adventurous."

      Herc O I’ve owned three VWs, the golf r being my third, and all have been generally reliable. That said, in my experience they’ve cost a tad more to service over long periods of ownership than my Japanese cars. Not enough to put me off from the brand, though. It’s worth noting that all new VWs come with 6yr 72k mile warranties, which should give you some peace of mind should you be interested in owning the vehicle for longer than 3 or so years.

  • @ak4939
    @ak4939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think every single one of these vehicles can be an everyday (and only) vehicle.......with the Type-R and the Golf-R being more "everyday" vs the Focus-RS and the STI. The STI's sedan bodystyle rules it out for me, since I need to fit in a dog crate into my car, and the sedans totally fail there. I used to own a prior WRX wagon/hatch, but this generation only comes as.a sedan. Hopefully, Subaru will introduce a hatch into the upcoming generation.

    The biggest demerit of this car is the 19-inch wheels. This is a Golf, designed for 15s-16s. The 18s on GTI are already borderline too big and struggle with potholes unless you have perfect roads where you live. Winter grip is non-existent and minus-size winter wheels are mandatory. I assume the Golf R is even worse. Yeah you can get new wheels, whatever, but a 40K car should not require immediate new wheels and tires.

    Alex, thanks for making this really in-depth review! I just have one question, is the car in this video a manual or a DCT? The reason I ask is because you keep gushing about how much better the DCT is than the manual, making me think that you are experiencing the DCT as you shoot this video, but your 0-60 time is 5.6 seconds, which makes me think you are reviewing a manual model. Other reviews I’ve seen seem to post 4.8 seconds for the DCT model.

    Honda should never ever add dsg or auto to their manual only cars. As has been proven before, once you add an auto or dog to a manual only car, manual sales go down, and then the manufators limits the trim and eventually discontinues it.
    For this reason, as we have seen with the new , NSX, Corvette and Supra and even some Porsche's, Honda Should never ever ever let any of their manual only cars have an optional dsg or auto, or it will spell the death of manual on those cars as we have seen over and over again.
