It would be interesting to see how history reflects on Billy decades from now. I have a feeling he will be remembered as one of the greatest musicians and story tellers through his music who ever lived. I'm not sure if I'm the exception, or if everyone feels this way, but for me, there is no other instrument that can capture raw emotion in music the way a piano can. I'm sure there are plenty of more technically skilled pianist than Billy, but few can tie emotion to the instrument the way he can. I consider his music a rare and valuable gift that hits me right in the heart like few can. I'm glad he's been around during my lifetime.

Mind blowing that he never looks at the keys! It’s as though the piano is a natural extra set of fingers… Free of thought… Beautiful…Deep…Mindful…Such a gift! Thank you for sharing you your passion and vulnerability!

one of the most engaging and interesting speakers ever, not just among musicians, but well beyond that. also not just an incredible composer and singer, but I think often a highly underrated player (including by himself). I truly pity anyone who can't appreciate his music. I hope I get to see him doing a show like this some day; I don't even care if he repeats things he's said before. PS if you like this series, check out the video where he interviews Don Henley (90 min show) - it focuses almost entirely on Henley, but still showcases Joel's great speaking ability, even when "just" as an interviewer. a lot of great conversation between these two giants of music.

If John Williams, for me, ia a "weaver of film music," Billy Joel is a "weaver of songs." His songs evoke and express not only his emotions while he was writing them but also the drama of his life and the lives of people around him. He even paints pictures as a painter does on a canvas, of the places that he've been to and made great impacts on his life and career.

I remember hearing this song (and the rest of his classic albums) in the car as a small child from 5 years old and onwards. Unbelievably nostalgic. Some of the greatest music ever written. Billy Joel > well, pretty much everything else.

I think it's so cool to just listen to him play. I love listening to him on the always temporary Billy Joel Channel (I think it should be a permanent thing for sure). I'd love to meet him someday and play the bass while he plays the piano. His music has shaped my life (no pun intended). I like so many variations of music between rock, jazz, heavy metal, easy listening, and funk. Billy Joel's music always puts me in a good mood. I have the Nylon Curtain album (as well as many others). When I first got it, I didn't listen to much of it at all. Then when the Billy Joel channel came out, I was hearing these songs that I had that I wasn't familiar with. I didn't realize all of the trials that he went through making that album, between a motorcycle accident and just having trouble in the studio, just making the album as he went along, which he said was a very expensive proposition. The Nylon Curtain may be my favorite Billy Joel album now. I was always a fan of The Stranger, 52nd Street, and Glass Houses. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video. Oscar Peterson would be proud.

Absolutely one of the greatest songs of all time. Ballads are the best. It's one of a handful of sings that makes me break down in tears.

I love this kinda stuff... behind the scenes, how it's made... you know...it gives a new perspective on the song as a finished product when you here a bit of what went into the writing.
This is a really good post, and I so wish I could have been part of THAT class.

Yeah. Somehow I thought of this song and Bohamian Rhapsody by Queen as "two of a kind" like a Pop/Rock-Symphony.
    Anyone else has this feeling?

What network was this show on? I wonder if it's available on DVD for purchase? Does anyone know if Billy Joel will ever release his Shea Stadium shows from 2009 on CD or DVD. There were rumors about it, but I've never seen anything. It's been well over a year now.
