There is a story of Scott in New Orleans while shooting NCIS NOLA. A random person happened to see him one day. As they passed, the person nodded and said, "Good Morning, Captain".
Bakula immediately stopped, called them back, and began a severe dressing down in front of everyone on the street for calling him "Captain" instead of the more appropriate rank of "Admiral". They said he did it without breaking character in the least, straight faced chewed the guy out, then simply walked on to resume his day.
I love that story and absolutely loved everything about Enterprise.

I just started watching the entire run of ENTERPRISE because I only saw a scattered handful of episodes when it originally aired, and I heard so much negative fanboy buzz about it that I never delved into it... and... I am just amazed at how great it was. I liked season one FAR more than I liked season one of TNG, DS9 or VOYAGER. And Bakula's Archer is a big reason. He needs to come back as an Admiral or Ambassador in STRANGE NEW WORLDS.

Years ago, I saw the first season and a half of Enterprise on one of the many streaming services it once appeared on, and I enjoyed watching it. It was interesting to watch how the Vulcans controlled what those from Earth saw and the places they traveled to, along with secrets the Vulcans were hiding. I’m currently watching all of the TOS and TNG episodes, but maybe when I’m finished, I’ll subscribe to Paramount Plus and watch all the episodes of Enterprise.

Admiral Archer might be a little problematic. Almost without fail, most officers above the level of captain mostly cause trouble, since the writers in the Trek universe seem to be strong believers, historically, in "The Peter Principal."
Since good field personnel are hard to come by, the main reason for promotion to "flying a desk" seems to be that they have become to hidebound to be useful in the field, but not impaired enough to lose the commission. Unless teaching at the Academy, series characters seem to be the exceptions, so long as they still act the same (So, they are basically "honorary" promotions ).

    • @rickjohnston2667

Absolutely! Especially since he could still be alive. The 2009 movie should have replaced that scene of Kirk as a kid stealing the car with Kirk at the launch of the Constitution class Enterprise in 2245, alongside Archer, since Kirk's dad sacrificed himself to save the Kelvin crew.

It really did go against the ethos of Star Trek, but I think it really highlights the changes between now and TOS and beyond. The NX-01 was consistently out-gunned and a small fish in a big ocean, like a kid with a slingshot vs. an army, and especially getting into that arc, the stakes were huge... Archer's actions may not have been moral victories, but honestly I'd imagine at least a few captains from later eras may have done the same in his position. [namely Kirk and Sisko I think may have done it, Picard and Janeway probably not]

10:41 See, I liked the fact that Archer, a true boyscout, was put into a position where he had to compromise his morals for the greater good. It was about as close to a Pale Moonlight moment as we got for Archer. They made it clear he wasn't actually going to kill that guy, but had to convince him he was capable of doing it. I also love how in Season 4's episode Home, Archer lamented not going out with more weapons to Captain Ramirez.
The Xindi Arc changed him, and good characters change.

When the crew of the Enterprise were desperate and didn't know much about the Xindi or their reasons to attack Earth, they felt like they had no other choices, but it shows who Archer was that when he figured a way to solve things as peacefully as possible he took that option.

Paramount themselves screwed over ST:Enterprise from the start. The first part of Season 1 was supposed to focus on the crew being on Earth, while the NX-01 was finished. You could even had the NX-01 outfitted with phasers and photons, instead of doing it so many episodes later. Paramount, however, wanted another ST:TOS...and then mandated that the NX-01 go into space ASAP. All of the Earth stuff that we saw in Season 4 could have been done in Season 1, and then given us social episodes like what ST:TNG had done.

Bacula was perfect to play Archer. He epitomized that sense of adventure that you needed to have in a first captain; he threw himself into the role(s), and would deal with the consequences, and what fate dealt him later. The must be building warp 3 vessels somewhere. We know at that point that starfleet is effectively Earths trade vessels rauthority despite military rankings, its a civil organisation. The MACOs are the military branch of space military. But there is no mention of earths starfleets missions or exploration prior to warp 5… all the officers are brand new. None have experience of warp 3 vessels for example, Travis makes reference of coming across violent bad guys but malcom never says in a previous posting he had to outrun aliens, etc
But to be fair the second scene has Hoshi teaching “klingon” to students when ten minutes earlier the entire world is claiming it had never ever seen or heard of a “klingott” and their species had never been seen nor known about so..

The acts of Archer in S3 are of a man with no fleet to speak of to back him up, with the fate of his species home world on the line. It’s justified. But not an approval of it.

It probably flies in the face of established lore, but in my headcanon at least, the Starfleet delta - or "arrowhead" - was enshrined as the official insignia out of respect to the *Archer* family. :)

I missed most of when "Enterprise" first aired, as I was deployed on active duty in the Military when it originally aired, and so didn't get to see the series in its entirety until my wife bought me the DVD boxed set at Christmas 2008. After seeing it completely, I really think it was NOT as bad as many say it was. It started off slow, but there were some especially good episodes, especially in the third and fourth seasons. "Count Down", "Zero Hour", "Twilight", "Storm Front" and "In a Mirror, Darkly" just to mention a few. Look at TNG's FIRST season. It was pretty lackluster, but by season three, we got "Best of Both Worlds", and "Yesterday's Enterprise". Hope Bakula comes back in again to Star Trek at some point. If not, at least I have his autograph on a pic of him in the Captain's chair (Constitution class) on the "Defiant" from the "In a Mirror Darkly" episode, dressed in the "TOS "style Kirk SHIRT!!! WAY COOL!!!

I'm a unusual Star Trek fan as my favorites are ENT, PIC, DS9, LD, SNW, NG, VOY, TOS, TAS, DIS, and I think Scott Bakula is amazing as the 1st captain as he is the prototype of the future other captains.

What? No mention of Mirror Universe rottweiler Porthos? I know, he was in one scene and presumably died with the destruction of the ISS Enterprise, but I love rotties.
Speaking of Porthos though, as a part of American digital only station Heros & Icons, they had an promotion for Enterprise involving Porthos with the not so subtle suggestion that everyone was really there for the beagle. The end of the ad even has a portrait of Porthos in an Enterprise jumpsuit.

Enterprise was one of the best. Ended way too soon. Manny Coto would have kept it in good stead. With a star trek tradition, a slightly weak first season, but not as bad as TNG's season one! Or the first movie, a gorgeous snore fest.

Would be nice perhaps even a hologram of Archer in say the Academy series. Perhaps a history class and a hologram of Admiral Archer is used to teach about the NX01 time period for the class in the 32nd century. I think that would be pretty cool and would allow Scott to somewhat reprise the role.

I watched TOS as a 10+ year old in the 60s and it was my favorite of the franchise until ENT. It's my favorite now, I love logical progression origin stories for one, and two, answers to minor questions like, how do we, as a species, get out of this current angry dystopian mess and get on with the cooperative, just, fair, and moral(?) development of the human species envisioned by Star Trek? TNG "First Contact" was awesome and "In a Mirror Darkly" (ENT S4E18/19) absolutely blew me away! Too bad the series didn't get more seasons.

ENTERPRISE is number 3 on my top favorite TREK shows. It was in second, but SNW came along and bumped it into third. I think the show got way too much hate in its original run, and most of that by the studio and the network. I also think the theme gets too much hate. At least the first two seasons. The version the "jazzed" up for seasons three and four was beyond a war crime. It could have gone for at least a good 3 or 4 more seasons. Heck, they should have brought Commander Shran and Ambassador Soval into the show as regulars. RIP Gary Graham. I just wished they hadn't killed Admiral Forrest, but, if they hadn't, we wouldn't have seen the true character of Ambassador Soval.

When Enterprise was first airing I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. The show lost me when in the beginning of one of the first season episodes Archer went on PA and told everyone to look out the portal for some celestial event. I wanted a captain not a tour director. It took me a very long time to come back around to watching again.

As much as I love Enterprise, watching this video made me ponder a "what if" scenario that might be even better.
When Braga or Berman or whomever was saying "where are the Chuck Yeagers...?" It made me think about the idea of a show revolving around the entire fleet of first ships. Not just the Enterprise. It could start with the people we saw in the flashbacks to Archer before being posted to the Enterprise. There are three or four people all in the running for the first captain, but the others also get their shots. It could have had episodes set on each of for ships making no one a true lead, but you have the four captains, the four first officers, other ranking officers, etc. They could be good-naturedly competing to be the first to do something, or do something the most, like most first contacts, etc. It would have been about the early days of Starfleet more than the first major ship, and could more easily have built to the Earth-Romulan Wars and the founding of the Federation.
