  • Another successful trip to Waddell Creek for some local flood gold. Went back to an area that I got skunked in, but found a more promising place to work. I made this October trip just before the rains hit!

    Have you tried Wildcat creek near McCleary or the Cloquallum? They both have gold and so does Youngs creek west of Elma. I pulled some pickers from the west Satsop just below the boat launch where it coes through the narrows

    Makes you wonder what you could get if you could have a large setup and an excavator. But I agree - looking for it is half the fun. Life's a treasure hunt.

      Get in line! We all are a little tired of stuff getting locked down. If you are in WA state, check into supporting Resources Coalition as one group that is doing something about it. Check their website at www.resourcescoalition.org.
      Waddell creek is on DNR land and they have been ticketing vehicles parked in fromt of the gates and if they are on the side of the road. You also need a valid Discover Pass clearly displayed. I feel your pain!

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends! If you are going to prospect on state DNR lands, then you will have to deal with it. You can check out USFS or BLM lands, but you will have the same issues. If you are in WA state, you may be interested in joining Resources Coalition. Their goal is to deal with some of those types of issues.

      Rather than me giving you my opinion, get a copy of the latest Gold and Fish Pamphlet (rev. 4) and read it. The rules are different for riffle areas depending on whether you have an HPA, working during the Authorized Work Windows, or using hand operated equipment. Hand equipment (sluice, rocker box, etc.), is generally 3 square feet of riffles, but you need to check the pamphlet for yourself.

    A door or window creeks. Creek is a verb. A crick is something you get in your neck.
    Water flows in a stream so it's called a Stream ,not a crick or creek.
    Historic illiteracy need not be repeated and passed along just because it is historic.

    Hi :) Thank you for sharing! I wonder if you could tell me where I could get a sleuths box (?) like yours? The thingie in the water with the ladder steps... I live in Vancouver Washington, just north of Portland, and I have been wishing to go gold mining for so many years :)

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +staceybrister There's a local club down there (don't know much about them). Thats a real good option for folks just starting out. The sluice box I use is for prospecting and doesn't handle a lot of material all at once. This sluice is made by Angus MacKirk and you can locate them online (I think this one is in the $75 range - less than $100 anyway). This type of sluice is called a drop riffle because the riffles are slots in the bottom versus hungarian riffles that look like an inverted "L". Hungarian riffles sit on top of carpeting that is used to capture the gold. I use both, but the smaller drop riffle is good for prospecting (looking versus mining). Hope that helps - thanks for commenting!

    I cut out Classifiers and just manage my shovel and scoop. Speed being the concept. No buckets ,classifier. I cover alot more dirt in a day. Setting up in the spot is key though. I have the backpack sluice. 18 x 5. And a scout shovel and mah backpack supplies and food for the day. And a good hike👌 Since November 17th here in Oregon.
    7.5 gram silver nugget. Lots of lead and 5.8 grams of gold. Biggest piece with my Gold Bug actually. A 1.2 grammer.
    I believe we can placer mine with a coke bottle and a shovel. We all get caught up with stuff WE HAVE TO HAVE when we don't really. Someone's making a killin. Promise you this, IT AINT THE MINER.

    I don't understand how that sluice catches anything. once the "riffles" are full of sand and material, the gold rolls over.

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gold is heavy - heavier than the sand and gravel. The gold exchanges with the lighter material and displaces it. The heaviest material displaces the lighter material. To be sure that we don't lose any of the gold, we clean the sluice about 1-5 minutes for every inch of ripple length. Timing depends on the material you are running. If it has a lot of black sands or other heavy material, the timing tends towards the 1 minute/inch of ripple length.

    thanks for the great video! I am new both to the area and to gold prospecting. maybe you could (or anyone reading this ) give a little advice. I am between couer d'alene and st.maries on the lake. there are a couple of run off creeks that are probably 1/4 mile long and rise about 100 ft above the lake. Would these areas be worth working?

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gold is where you find it. Good bets are locations or areas that gold has been found before. Having said that, it would be prudent to check your local area and maybe you'll get lucky. That's the fun part for me. I like to find gold where someone has told me that it's a waste of time. You dig a lot of dry holes, but every once in awhile you get lucky. Be smart about it though and do your homework. Thanks for your comment.

    I am new to prospecting and was watching a variety of prospecting videos and reading what I can about this. I saw you using that model in stream sluice here in this episode and was pretty sure you were losing a lot of gold because it didn't have a variety of ripples, then I saw your subsequent video where you were trying out a new highbanker, great upgrade. BTW, I'm on Facebook. Please look me up there. Hopefully in a few seasons you'll see me bringing in some gold on TH-cam.

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use that drop riffle sluice because it is easy to clean and looses very little gold. Its a fast way to process more material than I can with a gold pan. I have found that it catches nearly 95% of the gold that runs through it with the biggest issue being feeding it too fast (which is nearly impossible, but mostly with low water flow). Thanks for your comment.

      Coupe - get a copy of the State's Gold and Fish pamphlet and study it hard. This video is from Waddell Creek (south of Olympia) and is on State forest land. It is open for everyone and claims are not allowed (so I've been told). There are a number of good prospecting clubs in this state and I'd join one of them. Talking with other miners helps a person figure out what is and what isn't. It also gives you trouble-free access to their claims, folks to show you the ropes, and some training on the different types of equipment to use and when to use them. Hope that helps - Thanks for the comment.

    • @1926FordModelTCoupe
      @1926FordModelTCoupe 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dennis Petersen Thanks for the info Dennis. This is my first year mining and I do belong to a couple of clubs. I have some state lands near me that are just asking to be prospected. In trying to read, understand and learning the ropes I contacted the state about prospecting these areas and was referred to this document :
      www.dnr.wa.gov/Publications/ger_gold_panning.pdf
      The state employee I spoke with pointed out the sentence on the first page top of the second column. I asked about the "placer mining contract" and was told that these weren't being issued. Being new I didn't ask any club members thinking this was the answer. I left it at that until I met a guy at the miners rally that said he also prospects on state land and it dawned on me that you were also prospecting state land. I am attending a meeting tomorrow and will talk with some of the folks heavily involved in dealing with the state. Sounds like I may have been led astray by the state employee. Thanks again.

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1926FordModelTCoupe The other part of all this that you'll pick up on is that you find gold where gold has been found before. That means that you need to research where gold has been found before and look in those areas for the best results. You might find something in a "New" place, but it's not likely. Have fun and enjoy the search. Let me know how you're doing!

    Dennis,
    in the beginning of the video where you are classifying into the bucket while in the water, and the sediment is spilling over into the water.. is that technically against the rules in the latest pamphlet? You can't even pan without a plume coming out..
    I'm trying to iron out all the subtleties of the regs as I'm new too this, and that book confuses the crap out of me.
    Also, it reads that sluicing shall only occur in areas of primarily boulder and bedrock.. that would make it hard to find a place to sluice most of the time wouldn't it? I'm not sure if you're supposed to take some of those rules at face value.. any insights would be much appreciated, thanks.

      The best way to make that happen is through joining a club. There are a couple good ones to look at: Bedrock Prospectors meets in Puyallup; 2) WPMA meets in Tacoma; 3) NAMA meets in Kent. That gives you a chance to not only talk about the process on the creek but also through gab sessions with others. All the miners I know are usually more than willing to talk about the process, but you need to spend sometime with them before anyone starts talking about where.

      lozatvgdl lozatvgdl That's an Angus McKirk drop riffle sluice. I use it for prospecting as the next step after test panning. If it get's good results and I decide to work the area a little more - it's the step just before I bring in my highbanker!

    Great video Dennis. I have one suggestion. Go down to home depot and get yourself a dutch oven cover. it's the perfect size to hold all of you gold pans and classifiers.

    I thought you were only allowed to use Sandy and rocky material taken from the bar and on the edge of the waterway when panning in Washington state. I wasn’t aware that you could clarify muddy soil taken from up the bank. Might check the regs before continuing to clarify mud in the stream. You can get a big fine.

    For an hour and a half it better be 45-50 dollars worth of gold or it's not worth it lol

      +Gurn Blanstein True, but what else was I doin' that day? I usually prospect to find the gold then bring in the bigger equipment to prove it out. If you don't see me in there with highbanker, then you know it was just an interesting day!

      +Gurn Blanstein Depends if you do it for fun and enjoyment, than the gold is just a bonus. Not everything in life is about profits.

      it does. if gold is oxerdised it will air rate and float. mostly little bits but yes it happens ive seen it. thats why u always need to wet ur materials . See what type of gold ur finding. And pan orr angle /lvl ur sluice or whatever ur using to be for this type of gold. so remember...Always wet ur material. And make sure to get any big rocks out of it. As if its the same size of the gold in the pan .. then the golds gonna win. if it isnt then the golds going to be pushed away by the rocks and gravel. and ya dont want that.
