  • Revisited Creek #1 and had a very successful day. Didn't move a lot of material, but found a fair amount of gold right where we thought it ought to be! I just can't believe how much black sand and magnetite there is here and how loaded the sluice box gets. We'll be exploring more of this creek over the next couple weeks!

    Looks like Howell creek, southwest of Tumwater. I tried it but didn't find much. Mostly flakes.

    thanks dennis. I've read a lot about the East side but i really can't seem to find the time to make the drive. some years back I did a rip into slate creek and again....tiny gold flakes. many years ago I went to liberty. fun trip but everyplace is under claim so I never went back.
    I have plans to backpack into a place this summer to try and be more remote...might help, might not.
    thanks again!

    Hi Dennis,
    great video series! I live on the West side (Whidbey Island actually). I've been going almost weekly over the last year or so with only Super fine gold to show for it. Been everywhere from the Green to the N. Fork of the Nooksak. Is there anywhere on this side that has anything larger than 200 mesh? I've read all the books on the gold history of the state...went most of those places in the books too!
    Hey keep posting these vidoes....they keep me from giving up on this hobby...

      +Terry “Salmon King” Baker Don't get discouraged! If you're finding small stuff where you think it ought to be, you've learned where to look. Keep checking and if you're not at bedrock yet, keep digging. Seriously though, the bigger gold was never found on the West side of the Cascades. Do some research around some of the areas around Liberty, Blewett Pass, Monte Cristo, Similkameen River, etc.

    I would love to take my son out and try some Gold panning. Bring a sluice box. Just as a hobby. Quick question for you... Do you need a license or permit to pan for gold using a sluice box in Washington State? We live in North Bend WA....

    • @dennispetersen1162

      Edward DiBello No special licenses or permits are required. Get a copy of the Washington State Gold and fish Pamphlet (State Fish and Game). Read up on it and get out to look for some gold. You need a copy of the pamphlet with you and you can print it out from online. Read it and follow the rules and you'll do fine. Good luck and let me know how you did!

    At 8:10 splashing a little water into the bucket. The bucket was dipped in the stream then just pour it in the sluice. No ?

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not quite that simple. If you pour a bunch of water into the sluice, it will flush out any gold in the sluice. Most of the material in the bucket is heavy and doesn't pour easily out of the bucket. I added water to the bucket to get all the material left in the bucket concentrated, then poured off the excess water, then splashed water in to the bucket to slowly rinse the material from the bucket into the sluice.

    Hi Pete!
    Hey guy...I wanted to ask a question on your previous video (S3E5) about your highbanker setup.
    What size hose are you running there? ...and what size/type of electric pump is feeding it?
    Thank you sir and please...keep the video's coming, they're very informative and well done!

    • @dennispetersen1162

      I used a 1-1/2 inch pump. That is one of the biggest 12 VDC pumps I could find (don't recall the details of MFR or model - sorry). When you shop for one, look for GPM or GPH AND enough head to lift the water (ie 30 gpm @ 12 foot lift).

    New viewer, thanx for the informative videos, where did you get your sluice? And is there an angle that you setup to get the best action?

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +slad roznik The folks I bought that sluice from don't carry it anymore (Cabelas in Lacey, WA). You can order it online from the Mfr (Angus MacKirk). The angle depends on the water flow in the creek or stream. I typically set it for the top end with about 1/2 - 1" water and the bottom end about 2" with moderate flow. When you look down on it, there's a "V" that it formed by the water and I like to have that about even with the first drop riffle. I tune it from there depending on how much clay there is and how well the exchange is going in the riffles. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Dennis I was wondering what size classifier to use? thank you

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a 1/4 inch classifier. Most of our gold (not all of it) is less than that so it is an easy choice. I know a lot of folks use a 1/2 inch, but I can pan it faster with the 1/4 inch. I always check before I toss it anyways! Thanks for your comment!

  • @terrybaker6074
    @terrybaker6074 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks like it would be perfect for me to backpack with!

    • @dennispetersen1162
      @dennispetersen1162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use an Angus McKirk Recon sluice. it is small and easy to pack in, but it is also stout enough to not distort or waffle in the stream flow. I added the aluminum angle so that I could keep it from rocking back and forth in the stream flow. The angle also makes it easier to set on rocks to get the right flow and pitch angle.
