    Square / Robertson ... the strongest of the bunch to torque on. Invented by a Canadian 🇨🇦 by the name of Larry Robertson. It tends not to slip and damage material, it can be used with one hand, and it is much easier to remove/replace after weathering

    Cody: Leaving the ground lead from the inverter off the negative terminal did not make it safe for you to touch the wrench of the positive terminal to the chassis. The negative terminal of that battery was grounded to the chassis through the other 6 volt battery and would have shorted if the wrench touched the chassis.

      Didn't he say the inverter used 12 volts so why would he be connecting it to a 24 volt source and if they are 6 volt batteries of course it's a 12 volt output but the wiring that's existed before he started working on it didn't look as heavy as his 4 gauge wire I'm confused but I don't think I would be too happy with what I just did.

    Why did you not tie the inverter into the existing 110v circuit with a transfer switch? The outlet is right next to your inverter. You could then mount the inverter inside the corner triangle protected. The inverter in that location is very vulnerable to getting wet.

    • @ujmchris
      @ujmchris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Zack Darce it's possible there's a 110v plug on the outside of the trailer that you could run an extension cord to and charge the batteries, and the outlets are only powered when you're plugged in.

    • @alexandermenzies9954
      @alexandermenzies9954 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A very basic understanding of heat transfer will help you orientate an inverter.
      The buoyancy of heated air (heated by conduction next to the thin visible black fins of heat sinks) will cause it to rise (called "convection"); hence, align the heat sink fins vertically so those same fins do not hinder its upward movement. If there are ventilator slots/openings/louvres ensure those openings face upwards, too (hope your unit is well designed!).
      The ventilation fan should help push the warmed air upwards too, in the same direction (vertical) as the convection currents so that the warm convection air is not battling the fan.
      Judging from the Arctic conditions, this will not be a huge problem for Cody.

    • @mattwilliamson1714

      Noticed that too; pretty sure he'll get to it directly.
      Was also thinking: I don't have to be in the shop to kneel on the sharpest thing on the floor. If I happen to kneel anywhere, the sharpest thing within a 10' radius is likely to be right there at the point of contact. When the kids leave out 1 LEGO block after cleaning up two 5 gal buckets of them... I find that one piece while barefoot (which is the "Dad Corollary" to Murphy's Law). Am also the one that gets the only bone in the roomful of people at a fish-fry, or the one chicken bone in the crockpot full of chicken & dumplins.

      @JAC_Hammer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The trailer will have a place where you can plug in an extension cord and plug the trailer into a house or other 110VAC source. That way it can use 110VAC from the building that the trailer is plugged into to charge the onboard batteries and let you use those outlets in the trailer at the same time. But when they are out snowbiking, they won't have a house or building or other source to plug the trailer into to power up those outlets.

    Hmm when did 6 volts and 6 volts equal 24 volts? Yes Im poking fun at you... It's nice to see they are putting two 6 volt golf cart batteries in series. This is a much better way to do things than two 12 volt batteries in parallel. Because in a parallel system if one battery goes bad it will damage the good one. With a series system you just need to replace the bad battery.

    Inverters are very handy to have. I've been using a 1000w pure signwave paired with a 12v deep cycle battery to power things in my house during the snowpocalypse in Texas. I recharge the 12v battery with my generator. This setup kept me from running cords through my house which would let cold air in. Its also more efficient on my gas generator.
    We used my 1500w inverter at my inlaws hooked up to one of their cars. They lost power in Monday and regained power yesterday.
    For those that don't want the hassle of maintaining or storing gas for a generator should consider a quality invert as an option to use with a vehicle during an emergency. Very affordable and will give you some peace of mind.

If you don't have a power resistor to charge them through, you can use an old soldering iron for the load to slow charge them. If you just touch the cable to the battery you are going to get a pretty hefty spark, and you know how dangerous that can be. CHECK THE DIRECTIONS FOR PROPER METHOD FOR FIRST TIME HOOKUP.

    My father has that same inverter in his RV. The phone jack connector is for a remote control panel (I think it does a few things, but we were mostly interested in remote turn on/off). After a little internet sleuthing, we found some sort of schematic for the official control panel and built our own remote turn on cable. It's nothing more than a piece of Cat 5 with a phone plug crimped on one end and a momentary switch on the other. Basically, it just shorts a couple of pins together for a second or two to toggle between on and off.
    Another thing is we used a breaker instead of a fuse. That way, we could easily disconnect it from the battery. Probably not really necessary since that inverter has very low standby current when its turned off, but still nice.

    You need to put a DCDC charger in your truck so when you plug the trailer in you can charge the batteries as you're driving a minimum 25amp DCDC will do all though you can get bigger ones up to a 50 amp. REDARC is a very well known respected company 100% Australian made backed by ARB and may many other companies pretty much the bee's knees here in Australia and take off world wide. I would look at getting rid of those 6v AGMs and swapping them out for lithium batteries either a single 100amp or go twin 100amps for a total of 200amp in 12v. Further more just to be cheeky Mr Wranglerstar I didn't know 6v in series makes 24 volts.... yes we know you meant 12 Volts.

      Did he tell you the truck has TWO alternators?!

    • @coreydark8795
      @coreydark8795 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davedev927 Clearly you have no idea when it comes t vehicle and battery management just because the truck as 2 alternators doesn't mean it will charge the trailer or duel battery. The DCDC allows the truck battery to fully charge up and then send a full charge at 25amps per hour vs a trickle charge of maybe 1-2 camps per hour. The DCDC is what EVERY vehicle with a duel battery system and or trailer battery system so they can properly and fully charge. Now he doesn't have to go with REDARC but it's pretty much the best of the best out there. There are other brands such as projector etc also the good ones have a MPPT solar regulator there for you can run solar to charge the batteries when the vehicle isn't being used. Now he has 2 options. Either run a DCDC in the truck and have the camper and trailer plug into it or he can run one in the camper and one in the trailer. .

    • @JAC_Hammer
      @JAC_Hammer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trailer will have a place where you can plug in an extension cord and plug the trailer into a house or other 110VAC source (Like a generator). That way it can use 110VAC from the building that the trailer is plugged into to charge the onboard batteries and let you use those outlets in the trailer at the same time. But when they are out snowbiking, they won't have a house or building or other source to plug the trailer into to power up those outlets.

    Quick tip for the home pro, put your shrink tubing on the wire BEFORE you attach, crimp, solder, etc. the connector. That way you use a shrink sleeve that is just a touch larger than your wire and mechanical connection. Sometimes having to use a size of sleeving that will clear your attached hardware will prevent a solid shrink.

    How big should a pickup alternator be to use the inverter? Do you need 2 batteries in the truck

  • @5Iron
    @5Iron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Others have pointed out - you have two 6V batteries making 12V, not 24V. But more importantly - 1000 W out draws at least 83 Amps from a 12V battery. Probably more due to inefficiency. #4 wire is only rated for 70A and will over-heat. Please check your inverters spec for input current and size your cable appropriately. (I think, anyhow)

    • @5Iron
      @5Iron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just checked the Xantrex data sheet. First, the data sheet says its rated for 900W continuous, not 1000W. So that's 75A not 83A. It does say #4 is the smallest size cable. But that may be more for the 600W product, and not the 1000W product. And right after that it says they recommend using #0 cable. 75W may not be much over 70W, but if this were being done to code in a house it possibly wouldn't be approved.

    • @5Iron
      @5Iron 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I just found further that 75A does not reflect inefficiency - the real input is 100A, so a 70A cable is quiteunder-sized. I'll stop now.
