The median age of the population in Australia is about 38 years old. Farnsy found fame in about 1967 and Barnsy in about 1974. We have, quite literally, grown up listening to these two sing. We thought it was normal.

John Farnham been recording and performing in Australia for over 50 years. He has vast experience with stage and live audiences from pubs to concert halls. He is our National Treasure. His immense natural talent and scallywag lovable personality has endeared him to millions. And I am one. He has been declared Cancer cleared recently. God Bless him and his family. He has given so much love from himself to the Australian people. Through good and bad times. Thank you John Farnham. I was 10 when he put out his first single in the 60s called Sadie. My Mum was a cleaning lady and to me as a child this song was recognising my dear Mum for all her hard work. 🩷

His 2 hour concerts are never lower than the recordings, in fact he improvises parts that go much higher than the recordings. He is a true phenomenon. My vocal hero. And he's a great bloke too.

Crazy version of “Wild Thing” with Jimmy Barnes. I was opening with my band for Cheap Trick here in Oz many years ago and wild thing was coming through the PA at soundcheck, and Robin asked if I knew who the vocalist was? When you research Jimmy Barnes, he was dual lead singer (with Ian Moss "Mossey to us Aussies") of Cold Chisel ( I would recommend Bow River live at Ringside). For true Barnsey check out Working Class Man.
The guitarist in this, is Johnny Diesel, an accomplished singer, song writer and muso in his own right, and also Jimmy Barnes brother-in-law ( married to beautiful sisters), so you will see Diesel in many Barnsey clips.
A lot of our Aussie singers colab together, so you'll also find Barnsey/Tina Turner, Barnsey/INXS, Farnsey/Olivia NJ, Farnsey/Human Nature, Farnsey/Anthony Warlow, Farnsey/Stevie Wonder and many more.

Jimmy Barnes and Johnny Diesel the guitarist(real name Mark Lazotte) are brother in laws they married sisters. Jimmy and Farnsey go back a long time and are great friends. Jimmy helped Diesel break into Australian music telling him “get off my couch and make your own record, you’re too good to be a session guitarist or bit player, you have it all”. 35 years later they’re all still very close. Was glad to hear the other day Jimmy speaking on local radio that John Farnham was recovering well from mouth cancer and still is hopeful to be able to sing again.

I was still in single figures when Chisel disbanded but it was impossible to not hear their music growing up. All of the members of Cold Chisel were song writers, and Barnes and Ian Moss had successful solo careers. The third is Johnny Diesel and he is Jimmys brother in law but also a very good soul singer himself aswell as an incredible guitarist. I’m so glad that these guys are getting there well earned popularity outside of Australia.

Personally, I've never been a fan of gruff, screechy voices, I know some people love it, but my ears find it too grating, what's always stood out about John is that even at his most gritty, there's still plenty of pure tone and control mixed in there. Love him so much.

I still remember seeing this the first time on 'Hey Hey'. A true moment of musical genius. Your reaction is exactly what I wanted to hear. Someone who really knows voices, listening to a prefect performance. As a side note 'Hey Hey' ran every Saturday night during the Golden Age of Australian voices and had so many incredible performances. I don't know if you have already seen John Farnham and Tom Jones singing together on 'Hey Hey' but it is a treat.

THESE MEN and many more from the Aussie rock n roller landscape are responsible for the bursting of many a ovary over the years creating a relative fireworks of youthful awakening of lust and love! The 70's 80's and 90's is the musical score of the best years of my life, and nothing now can even compare. Where men were men and wore mullets like a lions mane!!! Dragon, Cold Chisel, INXS, ACDC, Hoodoo Gurus's, Men At Work, Divinyls, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors, Choir Boys, Mental as Anything, and so much more ... but these two .. the cream of the top!!! The best female singers and back up singers in my humble opinion are Vika and Linda Bull with Black Sorrows another awesome Aussie band Chained to the wheel and Never Let Me Go .. get the live clips .. these sisters are just AWESOME .. and love BLACK SORROWS .. sigh

At 8:30 when John almost looks around like he doesn't know where to go with all of his emotions and then goes in to that high note/passage... That's just, I don't know. That's magic. That's living what you're doing. Holy crap.

You wanna check out Jimmy Barnes singing with his band Cold Chisel. One of the greatest Australian bands ever. When you do, be sure to take note of their guitarist/vocalist Ian Moss, who sang lead vocal on quite a few of their tunes. Ian’s smooth soulful vocals are a fantastic compliment to Jimmy’s gravelly belts… Ian is also a killer guitarist!
Edit: I’d especially recommend this one: th-cam.com/video/y2by810nulE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KDF-KgSU0kvEr87d
This is listed as the "official video" of Bow River, but it is a live performance from their "last stand" concert when the band was breaking up in 1983. Yes, the band broke up 40 years ago this year! They have since rebanded, thank God! It is one of their best and well know songs, and it really showcases both Ian and Jimmy’s great vocals - the whole band is on fire in this clip!

In the late 80's I used to live in Largs Bay, a beachside suburb of Adelaide.
I saw Jimmy at the Largs Pier Hotel a time or two when I was around ten years old...I used to sneak around the hotel all the time.
I didn't hear him sing there when I was there and to be honest I wasn't into music yet anyway...I didn't know who he was at the time either until years later.
Apparently that pub was where he liked to hang out in those days.

Jimmy is a master of duets because he is so generous in sharing the limelight. I suggest you check out Cold Chisel's Ringside concert of When the War is Over, where he backs up Ian Moss superbly. Oh, and you will get to see another great Aussie vocalist in Ian Moss, whose voice is something else again, not to mention his skills on a guitar.

If you would like to check out another one of John's duets, I would highly recommend his 2000 live performance of the song " Angels". The fact that the three of them, Barnsey and Farnsey especially, have basically been in chart competition for decades speaks to the amount of respect they have for one another. You will find with a lot of Aussie artists they help one another out on albums, do guest spots on each other's concerts, appear on the same music shows etc...maybe it's because we're so remote here... but we've definitely been spoilt in Australia...John has recently been given the 'all clear' after recovering from a major surgery for oral cancer - his sons have said that he's singing around the house already - it was not certain that he would ever sing again, not that he ever had to, his legacy is decades long and he has given us so much content over the years, but I think as a long term musician it would have been a little heartwrenching if he hadn't been able to ..... Jimmy also has had his share of health issues... we are extremely fortunate to still have them with us.....Thank you Bethany 💗
