Well at least I won't get surprised when you shown that there was a bit of oil that came out when you pulled the shifter out I was curious what I was gonna be up against while I'm under my 2004 Honda TRX 450es foreman I was this was a great video know I know what to do mine wasn't shifting at all too

Lets freeze video at 1:52 and discuss "that old sensor" in detail You Tube friends. Great that the shift motor fixed yours. What I've read though and personal experience says the Angle Sensor is the primary suspect the first thing to try. Fixed my 2000 Foreman straight up, did remove motor housing and grease the gears while in there. Since was not replacing, nor even testing my shift motor I did not disconnect the motor wiring connector, just left it hanging there by the wire, yes I know my bad.
With mine you could hear the motor trying to work when you pressed the shift button, but the display would be incorrect or display only lines. Sometimes do weird stuff, like you'd push the down button to go from 1st into N AND instead the transmission would shift UP to Second! OH, and also would be fine cold, then when machine got hot shift problems would manifest.
This kind of somewhat ruled out the shifter buttons and the motor itself & pretty much pointed to Angle Sensor as the culprit. The Angle Sensor is nothing more than a potentiometer, similar to the volume control on old radio and TV sets. It is a wear item, you really can't get inside to clean it with contact cleaner, which wouldn't fix wear issues anyway. My old one was showing high resistance at the travel limit of the pot, between center terminal and the outer terminal - like approximately 400 ohms vs. 100 ohms on the new unit. Around 5k ohms at upper limit. So no wonder the computer thought the machine was in like second gear when it was actually in neutral. You can buy a new Angle Sensor on Ebay for under $20, whereas a new motor going to be three times as much. Hey, I'd go for the Angle Sensor FIRST, and clean & relube the shifter gears while at it.
Conversely IF you are sure the motor is bad, as in does not run when power is applied to the leads, it would be kind of dumb to replace the motor and leave the crappy old Angle Sensor in there to possibly cause you problems soon - 'less you had already replaced it not long ago. My 2000 Foreman 450 was similar, not exactly the same as this video. It only had two mounting bolts for the motor assembly. NOTE: ONLY remove those bolts to remove motor & gear housing cover together. Leave the motor Allen head cap screws in place, they hold the motor housing together, alright. If you have worked on motors, you know there is always a reassembly TRICK to getting the case back together holding the brushes out. I don't know what they are for these, and nobody on TH-cam seems to either. Almost nothing user serviceable inside the motor anyway, maybe grease the bearings. Not like you are going to find new brushes for the motor anywhere, and if you did they'd be $19.95.
Only other issues: guess it might be possible that the shifter gears inside the case are worn badly and won't engage. Someone did mention that issue here on YT, but I'd think those instances would be relatively infrequent. You should be able to see any thing that badly worn / broken by looking at the gears. Poster on another video here on YT had been a professional Honda mechanic. He said worst case is the "shift computer" can be bad, around $400. Now that is the only time I'd be inclined to convert back to a manual shifter like many do. The ESP electric shifter is a nice system when it works properly, really is not that much to it. You can't expect machines to run forever without problems friends. Fix 'em up and keep 'em rolling!
Hope my comments are helpful to the next guy or gal having Honda ESP problems. Not a professional mechanic, do have some electronics background.
Overall a great video, like the captions, clear images, and no annoying music.
    Happy riding everyone!

You skipped putting in gears. Was there any kind of alignment considerations or do you just put them in centered and in neutral?

Just switch the gears from the old one to the new one. And then just slide it on the machine. Pretty simple once you do it

@@HillendaleBros Okay. Thank you. I bought a machine that did not have them so I'm putting in new ones. I get the concept of reduction gears with a lever gear but I didn't know if they needed to be positioned correctly on a fresh install.

Hello, there is a problem on my 2008 Honda trx250tm ES fourtrax. the indicator on the display shows a different position compared to the position on the gearbox. for example on the screen it says that the gearbox is in first gear, but the gearbox is actually in neutral and the green light for neutral does not light up. when I press the small handle and the button down to put it in reverse, the green light for neutral comes on and the gearbox is in reverse gear. I note that I can't get the letter R on the screen at all. I changed the angle sensor but everything is the same. Does anyone have a solution?

Do you have to drain the oil out of the crank case on the Honda 450 Foreman before you replace the electric shift motor

my 22 yo Foreman was dry as a desert, not even a trace of dried up lube. Put grease in all around the gears.

There is a manual shifter on the left side, just stick your wrench on it and turn it while pressing the shift button. But you probably know this by now.

That is if your motor gets filled up with gasoline and sets for 3 days could it affect it not working no more I took it to the motorcycle shop just to have the carburetor rebuilt and they clean the gas tank and all I know is I went to go Crank it up the next day and it locked up I took the oil dipstick out and it was full of gasoline I took the air breather box off and it was full of gasoline now it will not shift correctly that is what they are saying that it could be their fault for taking the gas tank off a couple of times and messing up some of the wiring but does anyone think that if gasoline is filled up in your crankcase would it affect your electric shift

    • @HillendaleBros
      @HillendaleBros  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah it could. Especially if the electric shift was working before the issue and now it’s not

I was riding the other night and mine started being weak and shifting probs started. Limped back home and noticed gas in the driveway so I started taking it apart. Air box was holding gas and it had made it inside the cylinder and oil. I changed the oil and filter and got a new carb and been running about 2 weeks now without issue. I went thru the old carb and I couldn't find anything wrong with it so I don't know what caused it.
