Troubleshooting and Changing the Shift Motor on a Honda Rancher Electric Shift 4 Wheeler

We have a Honda TRX420FE with electric shift that has been malfunctioning. It’s been having problems shifting into second gear and even got stuck in reverse. We wanted to share some troubleshooting tips and ways to fix the problem if you are experiencing the same issue.
1. Take off the left side plastic
2. Take your shift wrench from under your seat to to manually back to neutral if stuck in gear.
3. First, charge the battery to ensure electronics can work properly.
4. Parallel a known good battery into the 4-Wheeler just in case to ensure the integrity of the battery and to see if it’s still having issues shifting.
5. Unbolt the old shift motor but leave it plugged in and try shifting with the ignition on. If it’s not spinning, you will need to replace it.
6. Plug in the new shift motor and try shifting with the ignition on. If it functions properly, bolt it on.
7. Take it for a test spin and the issues should be solved. If not, check your angle sensor.
