I have a 2001 350 es with 24,000 kms. has been a trouble free machine all those years, but the shifting is now quite sluggish, I think the shift motor is worn. thanks to your video I now have an overview of it's innards, and have gained the confidence to commence a repair. thanks again

I found the video very useful to me. Great overview of the ES system with a somewhat comical twist at the end. I like that you kept us in suspense on what the problem was and like a good "who done it" plot, finally disclosed the culprit. Some other viewers have so much dissatisfaction in their own lives that they'll find any excuse to vent their negative emotional energy including at this very informative video of the Honda ES system. I liked this video very much. Thank you for kindly showing the relationship of all the parts. I actually feel that I could fix one now. Awesome job! And thanks for tolerating the cold temperatures.
Thanks. Learned a lot. I saw another video where someone bought a kit to change the electric shift to a foot shift. That necessitated removing the gears inside. Perhaps that is what happened to your machine.
That's a cool video! A friend of mine has a problem with his 450 ES. He puts it in 3rd gear and can't get it out unless he rocks the 4-wheeler back and forth then it comes out. You showed a lot of good points and the sensors. He hit a concrete fireplace with the front end pretty hard. Didn't seem to hurt the bike but then the shifting problem started. It may be that sensor you were talking about in the front. Thanks for the video. I did start to fall asleep though. LOL
I watched a video cant remember from who.. 7 of 10 people removed the shift motor and cleaned it up.. sure enough I lucked out, Now its shifting like new, also I tighten the cable reverse cable, so no more pushing the red button just press the up ES and goes into reverse.. the ES just stopped working one day after many months of rocking the ATV and pushing the button a few times.. Now my fan motor isnt running... but I think its the Fan motor cause I have power to the fan.. OH and last week my throttle cable was getting very HOT,, all I did was unplug the 2 wires to the carburetor heater and cleaned them also, and Wow doesn't get hot anymore.. I have learned many tips and tricks on TH-cam..

It's a good all round issue what to look for to help me out on this Foreman. This 2007 was stolen by some kids and has been a jig saw puzzle to put back together. After getting the bike going and idles and revs nice, it still doesn't move. The meter dash had to be replaced also to see just what was going on. My N does show up now since I moved the main harness where it connects. So I'm going to try and pull those apart and see what is going on. A new switch only runs around 50.00

They removed the gears to bypass/disable the electric shift motor (since most likely they couldn't figure out what the issue was when it wasn't shifting i.e. ECU, angle sensor, electric gear motor, shifting controls, wiring) and went back to manual shift with the foot gear-shifter.
I'm pretty sure someone did the same thing on my bike haha. Haven't pulled it apart yet but I'm pretty sure it is because I hear the shift motor spinning and they welded a shift lever to the manual shifter shaft so if I had to guess.. the electric shift failed, needed parts but didn't have money so they pulled the gears out and made it manually shift
That's the way mine is. Mine messed up when I was younger and my dad took it to get fixed and that's how it came back. Now 10 yrs later I want to make it electric shift again.
What size are the bolts that hold the shift sensor on? Not the heatshield bolts which are 10 mm. I have it in between an 8 and 9 mm or between 5/16 and 11/32. Very frustrated right now.

Hey i have a 2006 Honda Rancher 350 es and whenever i either ride in a certain gear or get high RPMs on a gear i can't shift with the button anymore and i can use the shifter at the bottom and it shifts just not the buttons but i can stop turn key off and back on and shift fine until i do that process again. Any help?

hello, my 2002 rancher ES 350 was actually missing the armature in the shifter motor, probably to make it easier to manually shift it with the emergency shifter honda supplies, do you still have the ICM (ECU)? the only thing that lights up on my dash is the red oil pressure switch in the upper right hand corner of the LED screen, and the backilight turns on when i turn on the headlights, nothing else shows on the screen, all fuses good, fresh battery, cleaned contacts throughout the harness, need some parts from you.
Do you have the link to the parts you are selling on eBay? I am in need of the meter assembly or dash. Mine won't show if I am in neutral,reverse, or overheating. Any suggestions? Think it may be linked to why my bike won't electric shift when moving. Any help is appreciated.
I came across your video about the honda rancher es transmission because I'm trying to decide what type of four wheeler to get (rep 804!). I have some other questions about it though. If the battery dies, can you pull start the atv and still use the electric shift? Also, are automatic transmissions more reliable than a es transmission?
Can you also buy some other parts and put a manual shift lever on for foot shift while partially eliminating all the ES shifting stuff so the computer only tells the dash which gear you are in? on an 2004 forman Rubicon 500?
so I have some shift issue, it will cycle all the way through 1st thru 5th but then will not shift back with the electric shift, this is if I only go fast, if I cycle through the gears but don't do it fast it will shift back down thru the gears...any idea?

Your video was helpful i only wish I had seen it before I went and changed a bunch of parts like you did, anyway as for a leaking carburetor a had the same problem I kept on cleaning my carb got new jets float needle to stop the carb from leaking but eventually it would leak again it was from debris from my fuel tank it kept getting in-between my float needle and the seat or float needle seat so it would cause the gas to overflow so I just installed a cheap fuel filter and that fixed it never leaked again
I spent several years working at a honda dealer in southern Idaho as a tech, where atvs are in abundance. You would not believe how many angle sensors I've replaced.
yeah angle sensor is not all that expensive, nor difficult to replace. They ARE a wear item, especially suspect whenever the shifting is erratic for all gears both up and down or the display blanks out because the computer does not know what gear the bike is in b/c the stupid angle sensor is sending it incorrect information.
Do you still have the speedometer LCD/ dash LCD circuit board? If so would you sell it? Mine is messed up from the sun and the neutral light isn't working.
Good video. Ive got a 2003 honda rancher 350 4x4. It will shift up perfect. Its when you try to down shift that it won't shift. Some time it shifts and some times it wont. It will not go into reverse at all. I have to manualy shift it to go into reverse. You have any ideal wat the problem is and how to fix it
really late here, you've either fixed yours or moved on. I'm by no means an ATV mechanic, have some background in electronics. Other guys & gals out there with this problem. If I had one guess, I'd say the down shift (arrow) button switch is either corroded or just simply dirty. idk if you can open those up & spray in a little electric contact cleaner or not, or must simply replace the entire up/down switch. This would be for if the bike usually or never wanted to downshift thru any gear change. Now then if the problem was just would not electrically shift down into reverse, I'd be going after the little red round button switch you have to hold down. My thinking is if the shift motor, angle sensor & gears were working properly when up shifting they'd most likely work alright for the downshift. Would never hurt to clean out and regrease your little gears in the case next the shift motor. While you're down there, unplug the connector, inspect, and spray some cleaner in there, as possibly all it is a dirty connector. Don't have a schematic for the ATV, but I figure how the up / down shift switch works is that when the down button is pressed it changes the polarity of the electric sent to the shift motor. So if that is the case, all the electrical connections between the switch and shift motor are used for both up or down shifting. Only difference, for reverse, is the electric has to pass through the little red button reverse switch, and of course the switch contacts inside the down part of the shift button. UNLESS the ECM is somehow involved in the shifting, and electric has to route through it, again idk, but I'd go after switches & clean connectors first. Good luck, advice is free so maybe isn't worth much. Cheers.
I have a 2007 Honda Rancher and I'm having similar problems! When I turn it on the display lights up but where it should be an N for neutral, I'm getting a flashing line. No one I know seems to know what is going on! The Honda dealer told me to hit the starting motor with a hammer and that didn't work! The battery, solenoid, coil, and ecu is fine! I am at my wits end with trying to figure this out so any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!!
@@BigjermsGarage probably was going to shift over from es to manual shift. Drop the reduction gears, put in a spline shift shaft and a foot shifter and...you've got a manual shift with no more es!!!

I think why your gears were missing on your Rancher video where you did everything else and then you finally pulled that little shifting motor off the reason why the gears were not there is because they took them out and didn't want to buy new gearing and a motor and they just took it out so they can shift it manually and they put the motor back on there so they wouldn't have a whole their dirt getting in it so the reason why they went from electric shift to the manual shift and I don't know nothing about a Honda Rancher or what was the other thing it's other name of that rig the Recon I didn't know anything about a Recon either I don't know anything about any of them quad things but that's my opinion is manual shifting brother and go with it
I got a 07 recon that wouldn't shift. I replaced shifter control then angle sensor then shift motor and still wouldn't shift. finally ended up replacing my sub par battery. boom..... fixed it. it needs good juice to make all the electronics fiction correctly. it won't shift just using the power off of the Magneto.
wow, who'd have thunk that while the bike is running the magneto, alternator, charging stator whatever they have on 'em to charge the battery would not supply the proper voltage and current to operate the shifter motor, somewhat overriding the bad battery if you will. Now I could see if the battery was TOTALLY out to lunch not taking or holding a charge at all, would not start bike from a cold start, etc. which btw a really garbage battery DOES stress out your electronics. Just a weak battery though which was starting the bike from cold start after sitting a few days, and still no proper shifting. Have to try that on mine!
Well I have the same issue but I have replaced everything besides the shift handle buttons... it's driving me crazy and I know the shift motor works because I tested it . Replaced sensors ecu all that and still the dashboard has no n or no shift 1 2 4 5 r before I changed the ecu it had n on the dashboard I put a new ecu now it says nothing. I'm tired 😫

Well I don't know what I need I was just going to try and get the whole system and just replace everything and hopefully that will fix it. someone told me to put a new battery in it and it will work but its not working. so give me a price on whatever you have to do you want to get rid of.

That’s not a starter motor.it’s you’re es motor.and mine wasn’t like yours.can’t just pull my motor off and put it back together.I had to put the brushes back in the holder then the motor on and hold them brushes with the springs with metal clips,put motor back in then pull clips so brushes set
that's the 350 lol all you have to do is that wire harness plug in front of the handle bars probably has a little dirt in it. blow it out and save your money from buying half another quad. common problem. and for the 09 and up its usually the plug under the seat. its funny everyone says you need this and need that. even just using a pressure washer with break the seals of the o ring in the plugs. bam just saved you 20 mins of earring yourself talk

I'm trying to install a control shift motor and it won't go in completely (1/4" gap) . Tried moving the gears,etc. Any advice.
What would cause the dash to blink constantly
they left the gears out so they can shift it manually and put the motor and cover plate back in to keep dirt and mud out

I have a 2007 Honda Rancher and I'm having similar problems! When I turn it on the display lights up but where it should be an N for neutral, I'm getting a flashing line. No one I know seems to know what is going on! The Honda dealer told me to hit the starting motor with a hammer and that didn't work! The battery, solenoid, coil, and ecu is fine! I am at my wits end with trying to figure this out so any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!!!

They take em out to make it easier to manually shift when they didn't find the problem with the esp
How did the gears get out of it? Or did they just disolve!
I'm guessing a previous owner went to replace them but never finished the job.
@@BigjermsGarage probably was going to shift over from es to manual shift. Drop the reduction gears, put in a spline shift shaft and a foot shifter and...you've got a manual shift with no more es!!!
They probably tried to manually shift it with the external shaft.
I've never in my life have ever listened to someone that is so distracted in their speaking than you,. If you go to show something you talk about twenty different things before you get to the object you were going to talk about. Now times that by all the things you showed us and it turns into 18:46 of nothing. Has anyone ever complained to you before about not staying on subject in your conversation?

I think why your gears were missing on your Rancher video where you did everything else and then you finally pulled that little shifting motor off the reason why the gears were not there is because they took them out and didn't want to buy new gearing and a motor and they just took it out so they can shift it manually and they put the motor back on there so they wouldn't have a whole their dirt getting in it so the reason why they went from electric shift to the manual shift and I don't know nothing about a Honda Rancher or what was the other thing it's other name of that rig the Recon I didn't know anything about a Recon either I don't know anything about any of them quad things but that's my opinion is manual shifting brother and go with it
My 2016 Honda Rancher when I went to start it it was stuck in Manuel when I push the switch over it won’t go in auto
With those gears messing I don't know how it ever shifted into gear

I got a 07 recon that wouldn't shift. I replaced shifter control then angle sensor then shift motor and still wouldn't shift. finally ended up replacing my sub par battery. boom..... fixed it. it needs good juice to make all the electronics fiction correctly. it won't shift just using the power off of the Magneto.
wow, who'd have thunk that while the bike is running the magneto, alternator, charging stator whatever they have on 'em to charge the battery would not supply the proper voltage and current to operate the shifter motor, somewhat overriding the bad battery if you will. Now I could see if the battery was TOTALLY out to lunch not taking or holding a charge at all, would not start bike from a cold start, etc. which btw a really garbage battery DOES stress out your electronics. Just a weak battery though which was starting the bike from cold start after sitting a few days, and still no proper shifting. Have to try that on mine!
Well I have the same issue but I have replaced everything besides the shift handle buttons... it's driving me crazy and I know the shift motor works because I tested it . Replaced sensors ecu all that and still the dashboard has no n or no shift 1 2 4 5 r before I changed the ecu it had n on the dashboard I put a new ecu now it says nothing. I'm tired 😫
So I just bought a rancher and the guy was using manual shift. Took the cover off and all the shift gears are gone. Why? Haha

Well I don't know what I need I was just going to try and get the whole system and just replace everything and hopefully that will fix it. someone told me to put a new battery in it and it will work but its not working. so give me a price on whatever you have to do you want to get rid of.

That’s not a starter motor.it’s you’re es motor.and mine wasn’t like yours.can’t just pull my motor off and put it back together.I had to put the brushes back in the holder then the motor on and hold them brushes with the springs with metal clips,put motor back in then pull clips so brushes set

that's the 350 lol all you have to do is that wire harness plug in front of the handle bars probably has a little dirt in it. blow it out and save your money from buying half another quad. common problem. and for the 09 and up its usually the plug under the seat. its funny everyone says you need this and need that. even just using a pressure washer with break the seals of the o ring in the plugs. bam just saved you 20 mins of earring yourself talk
