Such a painful yet necessary scene. They were nowhere near ready for each other, both surrounded by so much pride and stubbornness. Incredibly well acted by both.

I daresay this surpasses even Darcy’s first proposal in P&P for messiest, most disastrous period piece proposal. Both men dug holes for themselves and Darcy’s was pretty bad but it’s like he didn’t know until he hit rock bottom. Thornton hit rock bottom, busted out a pickaxe and kept going. He somehow managed to veer a proposal into talking about fruit and politics (which they know they disagree on at this point!) and even dropped the ‘l word’ twice in the span of like a minute. F in the chat for this poor dude, truly 😬😂

Well in the book you get more insight into his feelings. He's very attracted to her and enjoys every interaction that they have, even the arguments, I think he takes what attention he can get from her.

Although it is clear that they like each other, the first minute shows that when it comes to their outlooks on life, they are polar opposites. She couldn't accept him at this point, not until he learned to incorporate a bit of her morality into his business practices and she learned enough business sense to apply her generosity wisely.

It is not until later that Margaret realizes she loves and admires John Thornton, after he saves her from the police iquest and his kindness to her parents though she has rejected him, the last event that makes her realize it is when he looses it all and she just has to rescue him. By then she doesn't suspect he still loves her, but his love is(as it should) is steady and stronger than ever, an we get to the climax of the story, the best smooch in all period dramas, I love it!

The cadence of Thornton's breathing between the phrases "you assume because I'm in trade, I'm only capable of thinking in terms of buying and selling" and "that I take pleasure in sending my employees into an early grave!" suggests that his feelings are much more intense than he ever lets show. It sounds as if he might be fighting back tears. He often comes across as cold, harsh, severe, and uncompromising but it becomes obvious that this is a facade which he's probably felt compelled to cultivate deliberately even though it doesn't really reflect the nature of the man underneath.

I wouldn't completely agree with you. It's not like in P&P - there's nothing REALLY objectionable about Thornton's proposal - he's proposing because he loves her and has realized it, and he thinks maybe he has a tiny chance because she saved his life. He just had incredibly bad timing, because she's spent a night agonizing over how everyone must think she's trying to 'trap' him, and she sees his proposal as him being forced to, because he's sympathetic to the 'exposure' she's made of herself.

Well, in my humble opinion, he has chosen a very bad time for proposal😅 Not that she would accept a day or two before or after. But at least they could have a decent conversation. She has a wound in her head, her mother is ill, her friend is dying, other people she knows are chased by police. And honestly, all their conversations to this point were bickering. Why the hell did he propose now?

God he is a beautiful human being. Throughout the entire series I sat there and said, "I want to touch your face. LET ME TOUCH YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACE!"

Very good point. I was trying to find the words myself but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Kind of makes their love at the end more deep-reaching and soul-stirring.

Yes, but she doesn't want to love him. She sees him as beneath her. He's a working man. He dirties his hands. She's been taught that is below her (by her aunt, not her parents). So she tells herself that she cannot love someone beneath her. She needs to realize that she needs to be worthy of him. Read the book, it's excellent.

I didn't understand it at first either. But I think you'll find the answer in the book. In the book, he said that if he had a chance in a thousand of winning her, he would take it. I think it's more about him making his feelings known really.

This scene in the book is so much better and the aftermath. Its a pity they didn’t end this scene like in the book where he says to her that he has never been in love before and nothing she can do will stop him loving her(or words to that effect)😉

2 teimosos, orgulhosos, cabeça dura, e com baixíssima estima. Sem falar da falta de tato. Chega ser engraçado.

please do. I strongly recommend you the book and the tv series. They are absolutely amazing, although the series is more easy to watch. It beats Pride and Prejudice, in my opinion. Enjoy! I wish I could watch this wonderful series for the first time again... I envy you :)

Yes, READ the book as the 'get together' is different and beautiful. What a turnaround for the characters. I cried!
