    Networks would rather cancel a show entirely than to pay Black actors what they’re worth in most cases. People say they should negotiate better, but the other side has to have a basic level of respect in your worth for that to happen. It’s usually take what we offer or you don’t work. The thought of Black actors being paid comparably is insulting to them.

      Exactly. Excellent comment. I agree wholeheartedly.
      The point is these actors are unable to negotiate top tier contracts. And yes. The network would literally cancel a profitable show to make an example of them.

    I worked at a alternative high school in Brooklyn. I was a school social worker for about three years. Gangs, labels, cutting, teen pregnancy, young domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, and the list goes on. Now working as a psychotherapist. I am the therapist from around the way as well. I can relate of the statement being robbed of your childhood. Environment plays a big part in nature and nurture. Taraji I was told I had an edge to me too as a therapist, because I didn't speak the way the other therapist spoke. I told someone there is a difference when I'm working with people look like me. They would rather for me to understand where they coming from, and have the tools to equip them with instead of me, throwing fancy words at them to impress them. Therefore, you are right, keep your edge. And the reason why my clients like me or even love me is because of my edge. I don't know how to be anyone else except me. also, I love love what I do. And the funny thing is, I'm meeting with people from all walks of life. And I'm helping them navigate through life so they can play their game of life to the best of their ability. Because that's what therapy is really all about.

That's 37 MILLION fans... but's let's round it back to 35 MILLION. Now, if she leveraged that incredible social media group and pitched a movie project to them through crowdfunding that she would star in and produce with lots of other great Black actresses and actors, she could raise millions.
    If she asked her fans to donate a minimum of $10 towards the production in exchange for a digital copy of the film, she could raise $350,000,000!!! That's a bigger budget than Fast and Furious 10 or Avengers: Infinity War or Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End or Justice League or Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny or Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One!

    Let's break it down step by step.
    1. **Income from the film role:** $150,000
    2. **Taxes (50%):** 50% of $150,000 = $75,000
    3. **Amount left after paying taxes:** $150,000 - $75,000 = $75,000
    Now, from the remaining $75,000:
    4. **Payments to her team which probably means agent, manager etc (30%):** 30% of $150,000 = $45,000
    5. **Amount left after paying her team:** $75,000 - $45,000 = $30,000
    After deducting taxes and team payments, she has $30,000 remaining. From this, she has to pay her son's school fees, which is $30,000.
    So, she doesn't have anything left after paying her son's school fees.

    I LOVED this interview!! Taraji is so inspiring, encouraging and real opening up about her journey. I shed tears with her as she relayed her ups and downs and her victories. I'm so happy that she's finding and nurturing herself. It's so true that when you go inside and love yourself first, you change the trajectory of your entire life. I just love her! Thank you Jemele (my favorite host of course 🤩)

    Black people in the U.S been not getting paid what they are worth from Doctors to Dentist, teachers , warehouse work etc. I just love her. She( Taraji) is one of the best Actress in the world. She can play any role, from funny to serious. She definitely deserves top pay. With Mr. Perry and OPRA They are the biggest names now. We just need to keep focusing on there networks and keep praying 🙏 That our Black people get paid what they are worth. Focus on Black owned companies. Now not everyone is raciest or trying to get over on people. So may the few keep standing and keep being blessed. Cause our country is one nation under God.

      Across the creative field, matchmovers, designers 3d animators you name it. Knowing your price is a dark art and making sure you get paid is even more difficult.
      Black owned companies, many also operate with a similar mindset . they'd paid those caucasian boys what their worth but the try to negotiate down with BP.. toxicity usually starts in the family .

    Great interview! They always want black women to change themselves so others can be comfortable. I deal with it in my walk of life. I am professional in performing my job but feel people want me to dwarf my personality. It's such a struggle to authentically be yourself. You are not allowed to have emotions or a powerful voice. I stopped letting insecure people control how I show up. Now they know I will not be changed. Stand your ground, be polite, firm, and unwavering.🥰

    What a great interview, I hope Taraji gets to see this so she knows that there is a large black community in the UK who like me watch American black movies and TV. You are absolutely big over here especially for those that like to watch black actors as they offer inspiration like yourself. I’m one of them and grew up watching black American TV. ( I’m over 40😂)prog like the Cosby show, a different world, hanging with Mr Cooper to Name a few. I am a big fan of Taraji and hope that in the future she gets the Pay equity she deserves, it’s only fair. This has been going on for too long now. Black women not being recognised, not being valued. We need to call them out and shame them.

    I think Taraji should start a production company. It's a flex to say that you were a part of big selling major motion pictures. So you would think the money would match. Well, for most actors, it doesn't, especially not black actors. The 20 million a film club is a very small club. But she's a big name and has a built in fan base. All she has to do is start a podcast and she'll bank off the sponsors alone. Then, reinvest those profits into the production company, make movies she wants to make and shop them around to streaming platforms. I'm sure Netflix would pay her more because they know more people like watching at home than going to the movies nowadays. She could even release movies for free with ads on TH-cam and get paid that way. And probably still turn around and sell the digital download on her website for $10 or $15. There's so many options outside of the old way where you gotta beg Massa to pay you peanuts.

    I recently read a powerful thought that relates to how our young black girls are perceived and treated due to lack of cultural competence. Unfortunately I can't remember the source otherwise I would attribute the statement to the author. If anyone knows please share. Here it is: "In black girls DESPAIR often shows up as defiance". Isn't that deep? I say that defiance is simply the hard shell protecting the wounded heart!! To Teraji's point about us being socialized to "be strong", if there were more trained clinicians and therapists who understood this dichotomy, our children wouldn't be over disciplined for simply crying out for help in the only way they know how. And they don't even know they are asking; they are just trying to survive!

    Me too Taraji, I have a lot of rage seeing how our people are treated and educating myself on our history. I hate I can not afford a therapist even with Better Help. It truly is heartbreaking for our community to experience this.

    • @monember2722
      @monember2722 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honest thought: Why do you relate your inability to afford a therapist with our history in America? Why go all the way back there when all you have to account for is how you have lived your life now? Is there anything you can change now to afford what you want?

    • @gladiatorinsweats

      @@monember2722 I get what you were trying to do here, but it's honestly a bit obtuse to ask someone why they relate some of their experiences to the experiences of the past. We don't live in a vacuum.

    • @monember2722
      @monember2722 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gladiatorinsweatsNo, we don't live in a vacuum. I suppose he is making a larger point, and that point is what I feel is unhelpful, and intellectually incorrect. Our ancestors situations aren't our own and we have to realize that and not live in the present tethered to a past of chains and limited opportunities that we haven't experienced. It's mentally and emotionally unhealthy. That's my point in this, there are options within his control to get help.

    I always was concerned as a young girl living in a house, where my parents took in foster care kids, and the social workers used to put these kids on medication within the first week. No matter how old or young you are, from the babies crawling to 18 years old these kids were on medication. so a lot of these children leave foster care system and don’t know how to function in the real world because they were so heavily medicated when there were in the system. It was sad.
