    On the 3 study you showed:
    Body weight had an statistical significant increase only in the non ketogenic (20/25/55) diet group of ~1kg
    Fat mass had an statistically significant decrease only in the ketogenic (20/10/70) diet group of ~1kg
    Lean body mass only had an statistically significant increase in the ketogenic diet group of ~1.5 kg
    You showed the study title and a few slides and only mentioned the negative results from ketosis not the positives

      At 1:08 this study is cited: Efficacy of ketogenic diet on body composition during resistance training in trained men: a randomized controlled trial
      Results:
      There was a significant reduction in fat mass and visceral adipose tissue, while no significant changes were observed in the NKD and CG in fat mass or visceral adipose tissue.
      No significant increases were observed in total body weight and muscle mass in the KD group, but the NKD group showed increases in these parameters.
      There were no changes neither in total body weight nor lean body mass in the CG.
      Conclusion:
      Our results suggest that a KD might be an alternative dietary approach to decrease fat mass and visceral adipose tissue without decreasing lean body mass; however, it might not be useful to increase muscle mass during positive energy balance in men undergoing RT for 8 weeks.
      If you just pick out the negative statements and completely disregard the positive you can make anything sound bad.

    • @VeganLinked
      @VeganLinked 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I just had to defend the vegan diet because of someone saying it kills children raised this way. If you look into those cases the parents clearly were not taking good care of their children. The one dominant case the child had floppy bone syndrome or rickets because they weren't getting enough sunshine. The child was also low in b12 and they never took the child to the hospital for anything even immunisations. It's easy to be an unhealthy vegan unfortunately so it's probably easy to be an unhealthy vegan parent...

    Not here to advocate for any diet, but I see that most of those studies have missed the "Modus Operandi" of Keto diet :
    1º - You start gradually. Reducing Carbs and Adapting your body for what's to come (Low-Carb diet)
    2º - Once you are getting adapted to low carbs, start eating more fat, but only to "Teach" your body how to keep up with that...also start reducing even more Carbs ( < 20 g / day ).
    3º - After 1 or 2 weeks, you intruduce Intermitent Fasting (the twin brother of Keto Diet).
    4º - At the same time, start gradually reducing Fat intakes, forcing your body to Burn internal Fat.
    5º - Don't stay in Keto for too long ( 1 or 2 months is enough). Return to Low-Carb diet and stay for 1 month, at least, until you can afford another cycle of Keto.
    Protein intakes also need to be moderated (25%). Vitamins and Minerals Supplementation is highly advisable.
    The first cycle is harder...better keep it short.
    To summarize : Low-Carbs for long term (all life)...Keto is better in cycles. Both need adaptation.
    .

    • @stingrae789
      @stingrae789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "until you can afford another cycle of Keto."
      What on earth does that mean?
      "3º - After 1 or 2 weeks, you intruduce Intermitent Fasting (the twin brother of Keto Diet)."
      Completely optional. Keto has a lot of the same benefits IF claims to have. Fasting every now and then for a day or two is probably a better option if autophagy is the goal.
      "Protein intakes also need to be moderated (25%). Vitamins and Minerals Supplementation is highly advisable."
      Protein isn't an issue there's no harm in exceeding protein despite the popular misconceptions. Eating real food (beef/fish/eggs) will alleviate any vitamin and mineral concerns. Supplements are a waste of money, most are poorly absorbed and only really work when there's an extreme deficiency by in large.
      No carb long term, stop worrying about percentages of nutrients.

    • @peplegal8253
      @peplegal8253 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stingrae789 : Hard to undertand your point ! 😕
      Protein intakes are not "popular misconceptions". Protein also triggers Insulin, everybody knows that.
      About Supplements : if you read the statistics, most of global population are deficient in some Vitamins. If you go for Keto+IF , you are probably going to need a reinforcement on that.
      Actually, the difficulties that people have doing Keto are not for lacking of MacroNutrients...but lacking of MicroNutrients.
      Keto without IF is a waste of Effort. Fasting gives a huge Boost to Keto, assuring high level of Fat burning, High levels of Ketones, and High level of Autophagy.
      My point was very clear : Unlike Keto zealots claim...Keto IS NOT A LONG RUN SOLUTION. Far better in cycles.
      Low-Carb diet can be (if done properly).

    There are two people I work with that went Keto. They have lost a substantial amount of weight, and good for them for doing so and trying to lose weight. But they look like pale sick zombies. I also did Keto 3 years ago for about 4 months. I was very mathematical about it making sure I did everything correctly and even used a ketone meter. I bought all the best organic grass fed meat you could buy and ate a ton of leafy greens and what little fruit you can on a keto diet. I developed some very serious digestive issues which till this day I couldn't figure out what it was after having some blood work, CT scan, and a colonoscopy done. My only guess is pancreatitis or a severe micro biome imbalance in my intestines. I then went Vegan almost 2 1/2 years ago and everything with my health improved.

      @xTruncz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did similar, tried Keto and got severe digestive issues from it and constipation, sure, i probably wasn't doing it as ideal as you could but the truth is who should be viewing something as extreme as keto as a "normal" way of life, it's just not balanced nor is it healthy long term and the science is conclusive on this fact. I think that sadly, most keto heads are inder the influence by the constant and reprtitive personal accounts of short term weight loss and success, whilst losing insight of long term strategy for a balanced life and geniunally healthy way of eating. I guess that keto really is a survival tool now used as a weight loss tool as oppose to a healthy diet, a tool that is sadly perceived as a long term answer.

    Also known as M1316V or p.Met1316Val, rs1061325 represents a common variant in the clathrin heavy chain like 1 CLTCL1 gene on chromosome 22. The (T) allele is associated with the Met (M) codon, and the (C) with Val (V), as represented on the forward/plus strand. A 2019 publication gathered a fair amount of attention in the popular press by speculating that the V1316 allele has a selective advantage in processing carbohydrate-rich diets (presumably including those with lots of sugar) of farmers compared to the M1316 allele found at somewhat higher frequencies in hunter-gatherers (who theoretically consume fewer carbs). The authors suggest that heterozygotes may have a selective advantage, with M1316 homozygotes presumably most prone to developing insulin resistance on modern diets. While we would not expect the major CLTCL1 polymorphism to directly influence the development of T2D, CHC22 accumulates on the expanded GSC that forms in cases of insulin-resistant T2D (Vassilopoulos et al., 2009), so its variation could potentially exacerbate insulin resistance to different degrees. The genetic diversity that we report here may reflect evolution towards reversing a human tendency to insulin resistance and have relevance to coping with increased carbohydrate in modern diets. ://elifesciences.org/articles/41517

      I think its pretty clear that if you do a keto diet long term, than you are just taking a risk with unproven science.
      Keto has about a 50/50 positive against negative study success in short term studies, and using keto long term could be outright dangerous and a doctor with lots of convincing theories is still just a guy theorising with no studies to back him up.
      The keto diet is probably at least 10 years away from having any conclusion that are not theories based on nutritional science. If the diet will even exist in 10 years.
      What keto needs is something similar to the plant based diet.
      Life expectancy: Evengelic Christians have been registered and plant based back to the 1800s and arguably have the worlds best life expectancy along with 1/3 of india being plant based for generations and modern western vegans showing the best health numbers of all diets.
      What the keto diet has is people online saying they feel great along with them showing that thier blood tests are still fine.

      The keto diet has been around and studied since the 1920s. If my math is correct thats about 100 years that it has been in existence as a "diet". Not to mention the fact that humans as a species had very little access to carbohydrate rich foods until agriculture took off so in reality the keto "diet" has been around before many of the plants we now have today were first selectively bred to be acceptable for us to consume.

      @Col83 lmao. You clearly dont understand physiology, or science in general. Alcoholics don't adapt to using ethanol as a fuel source. Every human body will preferentially process ethanol. Alcohol is removed from the bloodstream first, sugar second and fat third. The danger in alcohol withdrawal relates to brain neurotransmitters. Opioid withdrawal danger is basically dehydration. None of those things are like each other. They are not related.
      Have a look at 'metabolic substrate testing' in the field of sports physiology. Different athletes naturally process fats and carbs for energy differently. But its also trainable and you can alter it with diet.

    I wish this video could’ve gone into more detail about what the research subjects actually ate.
    Ketogenic diet simply refers to the macronutrients (high fat-low carb-moderate protein) and can look very different when it comes to food choices.
    You have the very Americanized keto where people kill themselves with salami and cream cheese VS the Mediterranean style keto with fatty fish, leafy greens and high amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats which have a ton of health benefits.

    I don't think people have really given a low fat diet the chance it deserves. I watch the people at the grocery store and fat people eat like fat people. I tell people I eat oatmeal, beans, and rice or noodles almost every day and have lost 40 lbs and they don't think that is possible. I tried a meat diet first and lost 20 lbs. I didn't like it and switched to a whole food, mostly plant based diet and continued to lose the same amount of weight. I pick foods on the glycemic index that are medium or lower and eat 3 meals a day, no snacks. They have it kind of right with the low glycemic index, but they take it too far. Fats are not filling, no more than sugars. They're just empty calories.

    This video seems to be a critique of doing the keto diet wrong. For the heart disease for instance, this seems to make more sense if one has too much of the polyunsaturated fats that can become unhealthy/oxidized when cooked/fried. For bone loss, that seems to make sense more if one doesn't get sufficient nutrients for the bone, such as found in leafy greens (more than just calcium). Possibly, the acidity of keto could make it easier to absorb the alkalinity of minerals that one gets from eating, though that is my guess at this point.
    Keto isn't a diet in the sense that you just eat fat, but is like a diet-structure or diet-framework upon which to build a diet that has sufficient nutrients.
    One main purpose of going very low carb is to reduce insulin levels to avoid the problems with chronically high insulin levels. Keto is also a stepping stone for fasting, which has even more benefits.
    Also, some problems in doing keto come from not being fat adapted enough and pushing too fast, particularly if one starts keto while doing athletic activity. I heard it can take up to a year to get adapted athletically.

    • @scrapbus9681
      @scrapbus9681 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes. There are many althletes who are keto or low carb. A lot of ultra-runners, ironmen and triathletes do exactly that, simply because you can train your body to preferentially use fat as a fuel source rather than glucose.
      A good example? Zac Bitter who does most of his training as a carnivore /keto is the current 100 mile world record holder running 6:48 per mile, for 100 miles. The fastest erg (machine test) in the US team is also zero-carb. So those are both ends of the endurance extreme.
      For us 'mere mortals', unless you are in the gym for 3hrs working out at high, you have more than enough muscle glycogen for your given sport. And that glycogen replenishes whether you eat carbs or not.
      Also, as you adapt to a low carb diet, you use less glycogen, and more fat at any given intensity. You can see this in a metabolic substrate test. A 'fat-adapted' athlete might burn 70% fat/30% carbs, while a 'sugar burner' might have the opposite numbers
