I'm 26 and an ER nurse. I read "How not to Die" two years ago. I went slow into it and am now fully into whole foods, plant based veganism. I cannot even begin to list all the ways your teachings and resources have changed my life. Truly, thank you!! I tell all my patients about your books. Every single patient and their families. I went vegan when I turned 24, now 86. At that time I did not do it for health benefits but for the sanctity of life and reading Krishnamurti. I have relished the benefits this WFPB way of life has brought. I do not wear glasses, read voraciously, sense of smell almost too good, hearing seems fine. Nature and her gift of plants, nothing else as good. Thank you Dr Greger for an entertaining and humorous talk.

Whole food plant diet is the answer to all our sicknesses I strongly believe now. 113/73. That was my first visit after 10 years of being on a whole food plant diet. I have not eaten meat for nine years. Started intermittent fasting two years ago, with only one full meal before 6:00 pm. Morning: one big mug of black coffee with one table spoon of dark chocolate powder. Mid-morning: Home-made soy milk boiled and mixed with black sesame and raw peanuts, one bowl of mixed nuts (Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Fresh blueberries and raspberry. Then go for an uphill walk with my dog for 40 minutes. Dinner around 6:00 pm: broccoli or broccoli sprouts, mushrooms, garlics or onions plus other veggies and some seafoods. My most recent biological age is 18 years younger than my chronological age. I’m in my 60’s. In addition, I do dumbbells everyday for 15 minutes and yoga 10-15 minutes. I read Dr. Greger’s “How Not to Die”, Dr. William Li’s “Eat to beat Disease”, Dr. Sinclair’s “Lifespan”. Most recently, I follow Bryan Johnson’s Blueprint with my modified version.
    Without prescription intervention, vital signs: blood pressure=100/60, SpO2=98~99, HDL=104, ApoB=88, Triglyceride=51, HBA1c=5.2, glucose=81, Insulin=5.2. Galleri Test: all negative.
P.S. not only am I following experts in their 40’, 50’, 60’ and 70’, am I also paying close attentions to those who actually live to 100+ such as Dr. John Scharffenberg, Dr. Howard Tucker, Dr. Gladys McGarey and Dr. Wareham. It is important to have a reality check.
P.S., I am feeling great everyday. The first thing in the morning when I wake up is to check my sleep quality. Then turn on my favorite music, then do yoga stretch for 10-15 minutes. Besides brisk walking 40 minutes with my dog, I do weight training for about 20 minutes, using four different sets of dumbbells, then two different weights of kettlebells to train my legs. I go to bed around 9:00 pm.

I wish I'd known this before. All my life I'd been healthy. Mostly vegetarian, but I did eat eggs, or the occasional meats and dairy, including saturated fats. No issues. Regular blood tests, because parents were ill, and the only way to not scare them with regular tests were to make them for "everyone". Boring results. Always. The only time I needed a doctor post teenage was when I was pregnant. Then my ex had blood glucose in the stratosphere and got on a keto diet. So I did the same in support. For the first time EVER, my blood glucose, lipids AND liver enzymes showed up high. Stopped ASAP, but wasn't sure what to do. Exercised, ate "healthy" but without thinking through all this. Ironically, I even researched supplements and such for weight loss, but didn't think of research on diet. Was STRUGGLING to get back to normal. This makes so much sense.

I was WFPB for a little over 11 years. Then early last year I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis after having a fractured vertebrae. I didn’t fall, was not in an accident, so the only thing I can think was that I was training to become a yoga instructor and a lot of the movements are bending forward, compressing one’s spine. I was very healthy for those 11 years. During that time I went through menopause and had absolutely no symptoms or hot flashes and I attribute that to no animal protein in my diet. I have to wonder if the osteoporosis is due to not paying attention to my mineral levels. Regardless, for the last year, I have eaten meat, fish, and dairy. I am going to go back to primarily whole foods again, because I truly felt much better.

plant based diets lower bone mass. So in longterm we could unnofficially say that it causes osteoporosis. This is due to antinutrients pulling minerals out of your bones. But if you feel better on plant based it is not worth to waste life with eating meat.

The four things are 1. A Good Attitude. 2. Do something physical every day. 3. Do Something social every day. 4. Let go of losses. All is related to #1 a good attitude. I am 65 and feel like I'm 30. I've been a vegan for over 30 yrs. I have genetically high LDL. When I was a college senior, in chemistry, I gave a one hour seminar on the therapeutic affects of allium sativa. I always cook with garlic powder and saute garlic but when my husband was diagnosed with throat cancer ( never smoked), I started making both of us bread with home made hummus with chopped fresh garlic and a splash of good grade olive oil. Months before I tried a statin which only lowered my ldl a few points. After 2 months of fresh garlic daily, my ldl went down over 25 points. Triglycerides also went down and total cholesterol went down also. HDL has always remained high.
My advice to anyone for prevention of disease is have some yummy fresh garlic bread every day . My seminar focused on cancer ( garlic acts like glutathione peroxidase ). But my two hour seminar, which originally included experiments relating to heart disease, had to be cut to one hour, so I chose the chemistry of allium sativa. EAT FRESH GARLIC. Maybe you'll be part of the group that it helps.

      5:01-10:00
5:10 aim - cover every possible angle - for the most optimal diet for the longest, healthiest lifespan with the best evidence
5:25 inspiration for writing the book: consensus document 'interventions to slow aging in humans: are we ready' by longo in aging cell journal
5:43 scientists in the paper tried to find the best anti-aging pathways able to be tested with humans
      5:51 ex's - drugs blocking igf-1 and tor -s6k enzyme
6:03 diet can do these too
6:09 is what section 1 of book is about
6:24 the term 'antiaging' should switch from scrupulous advertising to targeting bodily molecular mechanisms
6:30 called 'hallmarks of aging' - degeneration at the stem cell, intercellular communication, genome, telomeric, epigenetic, proteostatic, nutrient sensing, mitochondrial, cellular senescent level
6:35 one example - buildup of misfolded proteins (chaperone's highlighted) that can be disposed of via autophagy
6:50 at one time - cells assemble >10k different proteins, with fragility susceptible to misfolding/damage at any time
7:01 with nutritional excess, the body will trash the damaged ones and make new
7:14 but due to humans evolving to handle scarcity - this trashing process gets delayed till times of scarcity
7:19 scarcity hardly takes place these days, so the protein trash accumulates instead
      7:28 autophagy etymology - auto - self, phagein - to eat, autophagy - self-eating
7:43 autophagy does both salvaging and quality control when cleaning up what contributes to aging to help renew cells in a 'cellular reset' sense
7:58 "janitor is the undercover boss"
8:02 ancient ancestors constantly had autophagy, dealing with constant scarcity
8:12 due to no more need to clean up to make room for sustenance - there's accumulation, which is detrimental
8:18 autophagy is sufficient and essential for life extension
8:31 self digestion for lifespan extension - by 12% in mice
8:39 autophagy boosts healthspan - leanness, insulin sensitivity, impaired motor function
      8:47 autophagy decreases with age
8:48 garbage accelerating aging with a lack of autophagy letting garbage pile up - vicious cycle
8:49 the pharmaceutical industry wants to combat this progress pharmaceutically
9:01 can be done without them
      9:07 ex's - autophagy
9:12 issue - only happens after 1-2 days after, which by then, can lead to malnourishment - that decreases autophagy (which needs proteins, specifically enzymes, to operate, but is used by other parts of the body as a greater priority)
9:21 fasting should ideally be done under medical supervision in a live-in clinic, not at home
9:31 otherwise the body can lose valuable electrolytes, especially salt, in the kidneys
9:45 which usually isn't recognized (dizziness, tiredness, weakness, etc.) till it's too late
      9:45 alternative - exercise

      13:24 range: 6-188mg

      13:46 freeze-drying's fine

I remain confused about ideal protein intake. A 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that older adults who consumed 1.2 g/kg/day of protein had greater muscle mass and strength than those who consumed the RDA of 0.8 g/kg/day. Another study, published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2015, found that older adults who consumed 1.5 g/kg/day of protein had improved muscle function and a lower risk of sarcopenia, a condition characterized by the loss of muscle mass and strength. Yet Dr. Greger says this will shorten your life? Help me out here.

    • @matthewphares4588
      @matthewphares4588 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Those studies found correlation but not causation. For example older people taking a protein supplement might be more health conscious and also do some weight lifting, thus have more muscle mass from lifting not from increased protein. Protein is not the stimulus for muscle growth, the time under tension of each muscle fiber is the stimulus.
The studies Greger discusses show NO causation. Increased protein intake does not increase muscle mass and in fact increasing protein intake will decrease life expectancy.
The studies were designed to see if A causes B. The studies you bring up were to see if there might be an association between A and B.

    • @mattzilla331
      @mattzilla331 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It's probably reverse causation. Ppl who exercise tend to eat more protein because they believe it's what's best for their recovery. When I went vegan and stopped worry about my protein I didn't lose muscle mass I gained some. Strength training and eating adequate calories is what builds muscle

The answer is Easy: bigger muscles isn't the same as long life. Bigger muscle comes from mTor activation which also shortens life, so it's a tradeoff. Which do you prefer, long life or muscles?

    • @rtrev8197
      @rtrev8197 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Valter Longo says it’s best to have low proteins under age 65 but after then you do need to increase it. It depends on your goals. Health span goals with fewer years but more muscle mass might be more of interest. There is a dividing choice. Valter did do a study with women where they did gain more muscle mass after his fast so it’s not as cut and dry as I think health span experts like to say as well.

I stopped worrying about heavy metals, they're in everything. Selenium & NAC eliminates mercury and lead, folates & cobalamin eliminate arsenic, iron & calcium inhibit lead absorption, probiotic l.plantarum sequesters and eliminates cadmium. Also add a good amount of sweating during exercise. I do my best to find foods with lowest levels of heavy metals and don't worry beyond that.

Dr. I appreciate all the amazing things you shared and have transformed many lives.
I have a question and need help. How come people from the country who are primary vegetarians for many generations are not those with the longest life expectancy, 68 years (2021)? Instead, people live in the country where they are not having as much sun light, such as Canada, is having life expectancy of 82.6 years (2021).
I'm not very smart and can use your gentle help to learn.
    Thank you, Sir.
