In these scenarios, you can see he will fall back on a 4/4 unison stroke on the toms just to stay in time. He totally fucks up at 10:46 and does exactly this. And he doesn’t event attempt the double base part under the, “Please god help me” section of Ride the Lighting at 6:57. This is a signature part of the song. Seriously, he uses a fucking China crash as a ride. He doesn’t care about technique, it’s just about making noise.

i was at this show. left work as soon as i heard about it. had to scoop tickets in person for $20 and proof of vax. called my brother instantly and he came over. went to the show later that night and was a few people behind the front row. tons of moshing and a great show
At 7:57 James was supposed to change the chord pattern but didnt and it threw the whole song off....props to Kirk for continuing to go through it and he gave us an extra solo because of it! Real musicianship right there. Awesome show.
Metallica is one of my favorite bands ever and the reason i started listening and playing metal, however what kirk did is fairly easy. When james fucked up kirk just continued playing the solo as it is and he just added some extra simple lines, nothing fancy. Plus, any decent guitarist can improvise a solo, so imagine being a professional musician for over 40 years... yeah, nothing wow here he just did as it was expected from him. I'm just saying, dont be fanboys guys its super cringe. Nevertheless awesome show and performance by the whole band
Looking at the footage none of them look surprised. I mean, are we sure this was a mistake and wasn’t just planned for a longer solo from the start? Neither would surprise me TBH.

@@Salomon_G actually james (and possibly rob, hard to hear) messed up. James was supposed to change keys at 7:57, but he didn't. He did two full bars of the riff in E, looks like Rob was communicating with him, then he changed the key up, and all of sudden the solo sounds correct again. But then james plays the solo riff two bars too long so it fell apart again.
Great to see then on a small stage at a club venue. This is Metallica at its core. This is good stuff. They're in their element. I mean, they've been selling out stadium events for years.... it's crazy how big metallica got. I remember hearing Fight Fire With Fire for the first time way back in 1985... I was 13 and was hooked instantly! I mean, we'd never heard anything like it at that time.... Amazing journey and they're STILL doing this 40 years later..... I think they'll still be rockin in wheel chairs when the time comes😂😂😂 lol....

I remember seeing then when I was 14 for the 1985 Ride the Lightning tour. San Antonio, Cameo theater, smaller crowd, $10 and was about the same area as the camera man. I could not top that in this day and age. This took me back...Great video!
He's just being damn lazy and adds too many unnecessary fills in slower songs for the last 2 decades. He doesn't play One, Sanitarium, Fade To Black, Nothing Else Matters like how it was written. He also doesn't play Four Horseman like the studio version but still plays the similar drum parts of Leper Messiah to this day It's not like he's not physically capable of playing it anymore. I saw Metallica play Blackened with a Filipino couple where the girlfriend played the drums and Lars timing was spot on, he also played the song exactly like how it was written, note by note.

These Metallica guys are pretty good. This is how I remember seeing them back in the 80's when no one knew who they were and when people heard them for the first time they were like WTF! I have tickets to see them next summer, can't wait. I think it's awesome that they can sell out an entire stadium.

Saw them in '83 with Cliff at the New York Theater in Vancouver. Maybe 1000 people tops. Very intimate and raw. Armored Saint and Raven were the back ups.🤘🏻

Omg there's something about club concerts that are so much better than stadium or coliseum shows.. it's a different experience with club jams that seem more fun for me and I remember seeing iron maiden in a club called "shades night club" in orange park FL and iron maiden was going to jam there as part of there tour in 95 and Omg😮.. it's a different atmosphere that I can't explain and alot more up in your face kinna jam...❤❤🤟

Love these sort of shows. They always play better in small venus. Large shows are tougher to dial into the pulse with the other guys. In a club the kit's right up your ass so you can't miss the kick, snare and hats.

Metallica ripping up the stage and enjoying it to the max. The band is super relaxed. No huge stage so no unecessary theatrics just a band playing for its fans. Club shows have always been my favorite way of seeing a band. Lucky crowd.
Back 87 i think....a buddy of mine who worked at KNAC in Los Angeles called me up said to get to the Troubadour because Metallica was playing a show under the name Frayed Ends... We got there and it was nuts It got out about an hour before the show. We got in and they played their first show with Jason that night. I won't forget that show. I may have the details wrong butthe show was great. I even remember the opening act. A strange little band called Gerkin Raucous
A lot of younger/newer fans might not know this, but a lot of people just picture Metallica in a huge stadium or arena, but how’s this for context, when MOP was released, the majority of their shows were still in little clubs like this, or opening for a bigger act of the time. When MOP came out, people still didn’t really care about them, outside of the thrash scene.
