Jokes aside, Batman Year 100 is probably one of my favorite Batman stories. It reminds me a lot of old 80's/90's dystopian movies like Dark City and Brazil. It just feels... Authentic.
I love when you mention modern batman stories. People pretend like characters are long past their best stories but that disregards the stories that are great today
The best Batman story that is criminally ignored by the fandom at large is Matt Wagners 12 issue mini-series that was collected in two volumes as Batman vs the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk and together with some other stuff as Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner. The stories take place between Year One and the Long Halloween and retell some classic Golden Age yarns including one of the earliest appearances of Hugo Strange
Easily the most underrated Batman story of all time is “Face the Face” It’s one year later after Infinite Crisis Batman is done being a dick, he has a new outlook and returns to Gotham after a year away. It has everything! A solid mystery involving criminals being murdered, Two-Face having an incredible arc, Batman & Robin working together in full form, and spectacular artwork (especially the covers)! But that ending where Bruce offers to adopt Tim, god that makes me cry like a baby just thinking about it.
I started reading Batman by reading The Long Halloween. It was such a great and enticing murder mystery. But I felt there was a lack of an emotional angle besides Harvey Dent. But then I read the sequel, Dark Victory. Dark Victory was such an awe-inspiring story. It took the murder mystery angle of The Long Halloween but it made that even more powerful with the inclusion of Robin, and Batman questioning if his quest for crime is really helping. Then I read Batman: War on Crime and Batman: Ego and have been a fan ever since.
Great recommendation of the batman comics. Espically War on crime which it’s my favorite batman comic story. Here’s some other Batman comics recommendation: Batman War Games, Batman Venom, Batman Legends of the dark knight vol 1-5, Batman Prey, Batman Dark City, Batman Shaman, Batman Wrath, Batman Dark Detective Vol 1-6, Batman Earth One, Batman Terror, Batman Noel, Batman Damned, Batman Imposter, Batman The dark Prince Charming, Batman One Dark Knight and Batman Two Face & Scarecrow Year one
I met Scott Snyder at a comic con last month, he was super nice and even signed my court of owls book! I really gotta check out these, especially Ego since it’s been on my list for ages!
One of my favourites is Batman Zero Year, very underrated Batman origin that follows Bruce just staring out and facing the riddler, I know it sounds like every other Batman book but it’s really good.
The very first Joker story from Batman #1 is gold. Others I'd add include the Steve Englehart run, No Hope in Crime Alley, Knightfall, No Man's Land, and the recent Batman '89 miniseries.
@@troyoboyo17 Ofc it’s one of the greatest comic books ever created. Dare I say one of the greatest pieces of fiction of all time. Written by Frank ‘definitely does not do drugs’ Miller. And drawn by Jim ‘Can’t run a business’ Lee. I would rate it a perfect /10.
I really like Batman Made of Wood. Because I really like Alan Scott and I liked how in the story we got to see the characters of Bruce and Alan interact with them both having been the hero of Gotham.
@@jermo1470 i think the story is successful. cause i am a new DC fan (have read a couple of batman, superman comics and DCeased comics once) and the story managed to be memorable and interesting
Robin & Batman is such a good comic that a lot of people hated because they hadn't actually read the book and just based it off a news story and it makes me so mad
I have read the book and while there are a few good moments they went way too into the whole soldier idea and whatnot (yes I know it was supposed to be bad but still). Definitely not the worst take on that idea though (looking at you Miller)
I read it and still didn't really like it, like I get what they were going for but I feel it didn't really fit with Dick as a character, it might've worked better for me with Jason maybe
@@mikemorro140 If they did Jason it wouldn't fit because the point of Bruce's story is to learn he can't treat Dick like a soldier and how he treated himself. If he had already gone through the process of raising Dick why would he make those mistakes with Jason? Also characterization Dick is basically on point and wouldn't fit Robin Jason
@@spider-nerd Bruce taking Dick in was partly so he wouldn't turn out like him so Bruce trying to teach Dick the same way he learns doesn't make sense anyway.
I would add Batman The Imposter. It takes place in an alternate earth, and it’s written by one of the screenwriters of The Batman. It’s one of the best comics I’ve ever read and while it is an alternate and extremely realistic version of Batman, it understands the character extremely well (and tells an extremely compelling and unique story)
My favorite Batman story that I recently read and needs to be read more is the White Knight series by Sean Murphy. Art, beautiful, characters, on point, and the story. Damn I love the story. The book leaves you with a great question: "Who does more damage to Gotham: Batman, or the Criminals he fights?" I love it so damn much

Death and the Maidens is also a really cool series. The Man Who Laughs is a cool modern retelling of Batman and Joker's first meeting. Batman: Night Cries by Archie Goodwin and Scott Hampton is a very thought provoking OGN about child abuse. Legends of the Dark Knight is filled with a lot of great stories, but my favorite is probably Prey by Doug Moench and Paul Gulacy.

Thank you for giving a shout out to Tom King’s Batman. I see way too many people giving it shit online mostly for decisions that were outside his control like the whole 50th issue wedding fiasco but when it hits, it really hits.
-Batman Dark Victory is definitely overshadowed by Long Halloween, but deserves equal amount of praise. I think Dark Victory is better tbh, it's definitely a better mystery. -Batman Zero Year, although it's a part of the N52 Snyder/Capullo run that's heavily praised, is my personal favorite "origin" for Batman. I was so happy when War On Crime made it to number one. The Paul Dini and Alex Ross collection was the book that got me into graphic novels. It is the book I recommend when people ask why I like superheroes.
Great choices, specially Batman War on Crime (my favorite Batman story) Here some stories I recommend: The riddle-less crimes of the riddler - besides being a fun silver age story, it's the first to give glimpse of Riddler insanity, with him trying to commit crimes without given Batman clues, only to fail because of his own compulsion. The Man who laughts - A great modern version of Batman and Joker's first battle in comics. Hothouse - One my favorite Batman vs Poison Ivy stories, actually portraying Ivy as creepy manipulative mastermind but also sympathetic, showing how the abuses she suffered through her lifes influence the methods she used against people. Requiem for Killer - If you think Killer Croc is just some generic brute who's in the stories for Batman to punch, this story proves the opposite, showing Croc actually finding a family with some homeless people he met in the swears and in the end teams up with Batman to save them. Heart of Hush - Written by Paul Dini, this sequel to Hush is far superior to the previous story, establish Hush backstory, giving more reason why he is so jealous of Bruce as well continues Bruce and Catwoman story, with very nice ending that really shows Batman human side. The Authobiography of Bruce Wayne - Speaking on Batman and Catwoman romance, this story takes place in Earth 2 and it shows how this two came to marry and give birth Helena Wayne. Instead of sily romantic story, it actually end up a very well written batman story, focusing on Batman dealing with his trauma and fear of being close to others. When he and Catwoman become couple, it doesn't feel forced but rather a natural evolution of their relationship through the story Batman Strange Apparations (or the Steve Englehart run) - A perfect exemple of how to create a new story for Batman while paying tribute to the classic. Not only Englehart created new character for Batman such as the mobster Rupert Thorne and the socialite Silver St Cloud (who becomes one the best Batman love interest) but he also brought back classic bat rogues and gave them some upgrades, like Hugo Strange (it's this run where Strange discover Batman secret identity and becomes the great villain we would see later in adaptations such as Arkham City). Plus this story ends with the iconic "Laughting fish" story, one the best Batman vs Joker stories of all.
fun fact: batman universe’s writer (bendis) was originally offered the main run of batman, but he was too worried about “ruining” it, he wrote universe instead
I recently read the White Knight and it's really good. It gives a weird depth to Joker which I never thought I needed. It felt campy yet unique. I will definitely reccomend it for a change of pace.
I totally enjoyed your list, and it even brought tears to my eyes when you mentioned Batman War on Crime, one of my all time favorites. Good list! Well thought out!
Everybody talks about flash as the heart and soul of the justice league because he's so inspiring, but batman does the same in a different way. The bat family exists because batman has raised so many heroes.
man i know these dont do as well view-wise but i miss these comic-centered videos. i still greatly enjoy his content but i wouldnt mind seeing these make a comeback every now and again
Here's a fun hot take, All Star Batman & Robin was doing some genuinely intresting things. If they just toned Batman back even a little bit and didn't have that whole weird thing with Black Canary, it could've been pretty great. It ended early because of how long it was taking for each issue to release, but I'm SO curious to see where it could have gone. The end clearly shows Bruce opening up emotionally to Robin and the growth could've been great. Of course that's a lot of "should've"s and "maybe"s, but I just wanted to give my take. I will say that I went in knowing the reputation it has, so maybe expecting a litteral joke of a story meant that the genuinely good stuff just stood out more to me. Edit: I'll also admit that I probably haven't read as many Batman comics as many of the people here. I know a ton and Batman is my favourite character in fiction, but I'm not too much of a comic reader. I just have a lot of knowledge through youtube. Trying to change that though.
I know this isn’t a comic, but I started listening to the podcast Batman: Unburied the other day and I am REALLY digging it so far. I was never the biggest fan of Batman growing up, but The Batman film really turned me around on the character. I did love his old radio serials growing up and this is like taking those to the next level.
At the end of last year(2021) I decided to get into comics again and around March my local store had that 3 pack of year one, long Halloween, and Ego. Year One I had already read and the binding on the copy of Long Halloween broke so I was left with this copy of Ego and ever since reading it there hasn't been a batman story that I've read before or after that I've loved more than Ego, it just is the perfect batman story and it's a damn Shame Cooke is no longer with us cause Ego makes it evident no one had a better understanding of the character.
I love black mirror. It’s soo great and I love how it’s Dick not Bruce and it is in the same timeline as batman yr one. The art is amazing especially with the colouring. The story is so captivating. Also batman no man’s land is also underrated imo and batman detective comics rebirth run from 2016 which u mention coz not a lot of people talk about it
By far my fav Batman book is white knight by Sean Murphy as I enjoy the new take and it gives shows the holes in Batmans morality it’s a truly wonderful read
Omg, yes, thank you for making a video that isn't just "Killing Joke, Year One blah blah". I didn't like Ego as much as everyone else seems to (still really cool), but I adore Selina's Big Score, which is collected alongside Ego in that one trade. There are also many fun one off stories in that same trade, so people should definitely pick that book up, it's well worth the price of admission.
Here's my suggestion: Batman: Night Cries It's not an easy read, it's haunting but it's such a captivating story and it has the best art out of any comic book ever Also, the Batman in this eerily resembles Robert Pattinson despite it being released in 1992
I read this one comic about joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo and I thought it was pretty cool. It was a regular run of the mill comic where joker is being released from Arkham but it’s being told from the perspective of a henchman. He helps joker set up a bunch of traps and crimes for Batman and the whole time the henchman is like scared that he’s gonna pop out and beat the hell out of him and I thought it was pretty cool
A great story that is packaged with most copies of “Batman Ego and other tales” now a days is the one shit Night of the Stalker or Darwyn Cooke’s remake of it “Deja Vu”. It’s basically Batman stalking and slowly taking out a group of thugs as they try to escape him all told from the thug’s prospective. Batman doesn’t say a word the whole story and is a terrifying presence throughout. I hope to GOD that they adapt it in any of the upcoming Reeveverse shows. Give me a 15 minute sequence in the upcoming Penguin show where Batman is portrayed as a full on Horror movie creature taking out goons from the shadows any day! You don’t even actually need to see Pattinson himself since it’s not from his perspective, could just shoot it with Silhouettes and shadows
I just found my dads comic collection collecting dust in the Attic they were in very good condition! I took the time to bag and board them all. 718 comics in total mostly dc from the early 80’s to the mid 90’s! He had 2 copies of the first appearance of the black mask. He’s got an original death in the family set And he got a booster gold issue 1 and a entire set of the joker series. In total there are 610 Batman comics with maybe only 30 duplicates. He also has a entire punisher run. I think I found a gold mine.
I need to read Batman Universe! Art looks good and I love Up in the Sky. And personally, my favorite Batman story is Under the Red Hood and a close 2nd is Black Mirror
I also am an outlier in liking King's Batman run. It's not perfect. I read it all in trade, and as I was reading it, I could 100000% see why monthly readers may not have wanted to read it month-to-month. I did really enjoy it as a full read though. I enjoyed the stories with Bane, the double date story, and the Batman/Catwoman series. Cold Days is also under-appreciated IMO love the 12 Angry Men style story.
You ever heard of “Batman: Night Cries”? Talk about underrated. That book doesn’t get enough attention. It’s all about child abuse. The Dark Knight Detective finds himself in yet another mind-teasing mystery when a new vigilante with his/her own brand of violent justice comes to town, targeting child abusers. There is a certain, sick pattern to the assailant's crimes, the particular way he/she kills his/her victims. It's as though the vigilante administers justice and is out for blood at the same time. With Commissioner James Gordon dealing with illegal drug dealers and personal family issues, Batman's only hope of capturing this new villain lies in the hands of a young girl who's too afraid to talk. This nifty little Bat tale is great! Archie Goodwin's noir-style writing works on a level that fits the Batman and the dark world he haunts so perfectly by today's standards of Batman storytelling. Also, there is a panel that shows Bruce Wayne and he somewhat resembles Robert Pattinson so that’s a cool little detail.
Awesome video man! I recently read Batman Imposter which very much reminds me of Pattinsons versuon of Batman which made me love it even more but a excellent read and Black Mirror was great and loved Dick Grayson as Batman in this. Also collected the Batman and Robin 3 issue arc and it was very well done and like you said the water color like art was awesome 😎🦇

When he and Catwoman become couple, it doesn't feel forced but rather a natural evolution of their relationship through the story
Batman Strange Apparations (or the Steve Englehart run) - A perfect exemple of how to create a new story for Batman while paying tribute to the classic.
Batman lovers and madmen doesn't get talked about enough
Nice to see some love for kings run for once. One of my all time favourites tbh
The first White Knight book I'd recommend
Lemire is the man bro, his moon knight run is amazing and jaw dropping.
fun fact: batman universe’s writer (bendis) was originally offered the main run of batman, but he was too worried about “ruining” it, he wrote universe instead
at least, that’s roughly what my comic book owner guy said
@@bradvdp
so he just ruined Superman instead
🤷♂️
I recently read the White Knight and it's really good. It gives a weird depth to Joker which I never thought I needed. It felt campy yet unique. I will definitely reccomend it for a change of pace.
I totally enjoyed your list, and it even brought tears to my eyes when you mentioned Batman War on Crime, one of my all time favorites. Good list! Well thought out!
I love batman universe, I got it cause I love Nick Derrington's style so much, he draws my absolute favorite batman.
Can we get a Part 2 of less known batman comics that are good please? :)
Awesome video, Troy!! Thanks for the recommendations
I really appreciate all the effort u put into ur videos. It really adds so much quality and caliber to it. I love ur videos!!!!!!
After hearing the concept for War on Crime, that would be a great inspiration for The Batman 2

"Batman Earth One" and "Batman Noel"
At the end of last year(2021) I decided to get into comics again and around March my local store had that 3 pack of year one, long Halloween, and Ego. Year One I had already read and the binding on the copy of Long Halloween broke so I was left with this copy of Ego and ever since reading it there hasn't been a batman story that I've read before or after that I've loved more than Ego, it just is the perfect batman story and it's a damn Shame Cooke is no longer with us cause Ego makes it evident no one had a better understanding of the character.
My favourite Batman story is The Long Halloween but a lesser known book that I think people should read is Batman Europia and Reptilian
I finally read Batman Universe after watching this video a while ago. Pretty danm good, and I loved the green arrow parts
My fav is Sean Murphys White Knight comics, by far!
I recommend Batman huntress cry for blood, it's a great deep dive into her origin and the basis of her story in the birds of prey movie
How tf are Ego and Black Mirror underrated, I see them mentioned every time there's a discussion about the best Batman stories!
Someone should make Zack Snyder read Batman: War On Crime
Good video, I'll definitely check out these comics. Can't wait for the next upload
Here's my suggestion:
Batman: Night Cries
It's not an easy read, it's haunting but it's such a captivating story and it has the best art out of any comic book ever
Also, the Batman in this eerily resembles Robert Pattinson despite it being released in 1992
I read this one comic about joker by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo and I thought it was pretty cool.
I was waiting for a batman video for a long time
omg when you started with Batman All Star, I was about to write a raging comment. Good one.
I need to read Batman Universe! Art looks good and I love Up in the Sky. And personally, my favorite Batman story is Under the Red Hood and a close 2nd is Black Mirror
Thank you for this list.
I will have some reading to do.
Though these videos might not get as many views as others these are definitely my favorite
Thank you I've heard of a few but I wanted to read stuff that hasn't been adapted
Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen is my favorite Batman comic
Good list; would love to hear more about your thoughts on Darwayn Cooke
War on crime is amazing! Truly an underrated Batman comic.
I would love to see more Batman comics I've missed
I also am an outlier in liking King's Batman run. It's not perfect. I read it all in trade, and as I was reading it, I could 100000% see why monthly readers may not have wanted to read it month-to-month. I did really enjoy it as a full read though. I enjoyed the stories with Bane, the double date story, and the Batman/Catwoman series. Cold Days is also under-appreciated IMO love the 12 Angry Men style story.
I would love a video like this but for Green Arrow comics, flash comics, pretty much every comic character but that isn't feasible
Great video especially for someone like me looking for something new but not long or connected to other stories. Do one on spiderman please
Love Black Mirror, fantastic pick 👏👏👏
Awesome video man! I recently read Batman Imposter which very much reminds me of Pattinsons versuon of Batman which made me love it even more but a excellent read and Black Mirror was great and loved Dick Grayson as Batman in this. Also collected the Batman and Robin 3 issue arc and it was very well done and like you said the water color like art was awesome 😎🦇
Hey there’s this really under rated book called Dark Knight Returns. Not a lot of people know about it. If you haven’t checked it out I highly recommend!
1. Strange Apparitions
2. War on Crime
3. Night of the Stalker
4. Ego
5. Blind Justice
6. Death of the Innocents
7. Gone Sane
8. Night Cries
9. Birth of the Demon
10. Ultimate Evil (Novelization)
Thanks for the list
I love the word underrated.
Troyoboyo
Can you please make a video about the long Halloween
I know it's kindoff popular but I would love to see you talk about it because it's my favorite batman comic
This feels like a gentleman who watches a lot of comic pop
Fantastic video, you’re very charismatic! Subbed!
I read all of them after this video, they're great. But I would ad the new 52 Batman and Robin Peter J. Tomasi run
Does Batman ever solve mysteries? Or does he just beat up people really well? Or plans really well? I wanna read mysteries!
He used too
