  • If you have a tight and stiff straight arm after a stroke, you might want to watch this video.
After a stroke, two abnormal synergy patterns might happen to your arm. One is the usual soastic, bent and curled up arm and the other one is a stiff straight and spastic arm. In this video we will manage and loosen up a stiff, tight, spastic and straight arm after stroke. We need to first loosen up the tight areas.
We will start massaging the chest which is usually tight and draws your arm and shoulder inwards. The next area to massage is the front of the shoulder. Spend about a minute or so in massaging these areas.
After massaging the chest and shoulder, stretch and move the shoulder out and back. The area that is making the elbow difficult to bend is the Back of your arm. This is where your triceps is located which is contracted in that position. Spend about one minute of massage to loosen up that area. After massaging the triceps try to bend your elbow and go slow. Do not force the elbow to bend. You can also put your arm on a table and lean towards it if you have a good balance. If not, put your arm to the side while sitting down and then lean towards it to slowly bend the elbow. You can guide the arm to bend by pushing backwards at the front of the elbow.
Usually the forearm is also pronated and turned facing down. It is difficult to turn your forearm up to get your palm to face up. So we need to massage the inside of your forearm which is tight. After massaging that area, a sister arm to turn it up. Go slow again in doing so. If you notice your wrist is extended. This time we will massage the back part of your forearm. Spend a few minutes in massaging that area and then after try to stretch your rest to the opposite direction which is flexion.
Your hand and fingers are also tight into a fist. Just remember that the key to opening up your hand is your thumb once you’re able to manage to extend and stretch your thumb, you should be able to get access to your fingers by inserting your fingers from your good hand through and slowly stretch your fingers to extension. Do this very slowly to avoid rebound. Do this exercises and massage a few times during the day if you have extensor synergy spasticity.

Thank you, Nathan, for another very helpful video training session. My wife has tried several hand/wrist/finger braces. In this video you mentioned toward then end, about wearing a brace. Do you have any specific brace recommendations? Do you have a video where you've talked about hand braces? Thanks again.

Sir very well demonstrated in detail. Sir one of my friend has Rheumatoid Arthritis her fingers are become stiff N turned inwards on palm., the bone behind her finger is bulging out so finger is not becoming straight n she has a bunion on the side of her hand thumb. Can she do the same exercise which you demonstrated. God bless you.

Yes but not too much because she would need surgery with bunions. Just to slow
Down the worsening if the arthritis.
