As an OT I’ve been giving these pillow recommendations for joint protection for some time - and I also added a recommendation from my own experience - a bed rail! I always end up knocking pillows to the side, subtracting or adding through the night as I alternate positions (bc I need pillows for my hips too!!). Now I don’t have to pick them up off the floor in the middle of the night and they’re not a tripping hazard / fall risk either :)

This is helpful! I have had three rotator cuff surgeries and my right shoulder probably needs a replacement. I have difficulty sleeping on my back and also use a clap machine. All this means I rarely sleep more than 5 hours at night. I end up dozing in a chair during the day. I have been sleeping on two pillows under my head to lift the pressure on my shoulders as I sleep on my side. I have so much joint pain from both osteo and psoriatic arthritis and have had three spinal surgeries with multiple fusions. I have an implanted spinal stimulator for pain control. I also have significant neuropathy in my legs and arms. I am under the care of a neurological pain clinic. This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and am subscribing. Thanks for this advice.

The unfortunate thing is that the ways Bob and Brad say to use pillows to sleep better without shoulder pain has not helped me at all as I have tried these ways. Years ago I came up with this very solution for side sleeping, and what a difference it made! I use thicker pillows than the ones they used under both my ribs and my hips. I added a thin pillow below my usual latex head pillow to make up the resulting height difference of my neck and head. I later added a "knee" pillow. This configuration took me from tossing and turning multiple times a night - AND shoulder pain! - to sleeping like the dead. I barely move for hours on end. It's been life changing!

I'm glad I found this! I only sleep on my sides and I have shoulder pain in both shoulders. My pain is from torn rotator cuffs, both sides, however a year ago I fell and ended up with a second full thickness tear on the right side along with a partial tear of my right deltoid. I have weakness and decreased use of that arm and the joint has become unstable. Over the next few weeks I will be making arrangements for surgery to do a reverse shoulder replacement on the right. In the meantime I will be trying this to hopefully get some more comfortable, consistent sleep.

I was a stomach sleeper for years and from time to time I still sleep on my tummy. However since having shoulder pain I started sleeping on my back and got a pregnancy pillow that does a lot of what you guys stated. It makes so much sense because a lot of times I do add pillows on the side to lift my arms up. Thank you so much for what you guys do! It has been a tremendous help with managing back neck and shoulder pain. A lot of times when I bring the concerns up to doctors they just tell me to lose weight. However, it's hard to lose weight when you're always in pain. This is why you guys are so great.

"Welcome to the home shopping network version of Physical therapy!!!!" Just to give people who actually want help for their shoulders a hint: You need something to brace your lower back or your ribs and/or back will start to get wonky and that will debilitate you more than a frozen shoulder. As a shoulder health tip: find a place where you can hang from something that is low enough that you can gradually put more pressure on your shoulders until you are in a complete hang. Do that every day and you will feel an improvement. Also, most people don't sleep completely still so the multiple pillows approach usually ends us as a pile of pillows on the floor unless you get one of those long "huggable" pillows

I just finished physical therapy for my neck bones running into my jaw bone. I was having serious problems with TMJ and the twist also messed up my right shoulder. While my jaw pain was significantly reduced I still had shoulder pain and aches when I woke up. No matter how much I tried to stack up my pillows to support my head, the pain didn't go away. Yesterday when I was having insomnia around 2 am, I watched this video on a whim. So last night I thought I had nothing else to lose to I used my extra firm pillow to support my torso and create that shoulder pocket. While I still tossed and turned, this is the first morning in a long time that I didn't have shoulder pain. My back didn't hurt either. It's almost like I woke up in a better posture. I think I need to optimize this. This was long winded, but I want to say thank you. I may be able to function again.

Hoollllly cow, I have a weird pillow arrangement I've been doing without thinking! Some nights I just haven't been able to figure out how to get into position to be maximum comfortable. You guys just opened my eyes to the revelation that 'max-comfort' for me has been using the pillows to take pressure off my right shoulder. Don't know how I wasn't making the connection. Thank you! Keeping this in mind next time I'm hurting.

Just got this in my feed
1-I've slept with a collie sized stuffed cow since I was 4 years old (I'm now 51 lol) She was hand knit by my aunt for me, at first obviously she was my favorite stuffy. In the ensuing decades she's been squished in all the right places and supports my back and shoulders now. I'm a side sleeper with a CPAP, I'm morbidly obese due to lymphedema and lipedema so that extra support helps so much.
2- how would a large chested woman stuff a pillow like you did under her arm? That would be a lot of maneuvering!

Have to wait for drs appt that’s in a week. I did go to ER because I was in agony with comfort o my if I put my arm over my head.. they think pinched nerve and a knot top of shoulder.. shooting pain down my arm. I’ve been trying to sleep on my back even with pillow support and it still hurts so badly so I’m not sleeping well or I roll onto sore shoulder and wake up in agony too. End up throwing my arm over my head gritting my teeth from the pain..in most positions.
Just experimented with the side canal and I’m hopeful. Just wanted to thank you guys for what you do and always making me smile.

Thank you Brad and Bob that makes a lot of sense. I have been struggling to sleep with shoulder pain and had actually tried experimenting with extra pillows sleeping on my side and on my back. Sleeping on my back with a pillow under the sore shoulder and arm is reasonable but that leads to discomfort in the lower back unless you also put a pillow under the knees or just above. Likewise sleeping on my front use a pillow lengthways under the torso but not good for the shoulder.

I still experience some minor discomfort here and there with my right shoulder. But my left is the one that gives me a hard time. I really cant sleep on my left shoulder even using the canal trick they mentioned or i will have discomfort or pain. My best option really is to avoid laying on my side all together but it takes a while to fall asleep like that for me. So sometimes using a pillow or small blanket i can then prop one of my arms up to relieve any discomfort in my shoulders when laying on my back and that seems to be fine.

    • @Rcd710
      @Rcd710 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yea my first injury to my left shoulder was impingment from squatting, which i then slightly re injured probably a year later trying to ignore the pain doing barbell shoulder press. The right one im still unsure about. The 2 days prior i had played a ton of basketball and the third morning a woke up and my right shoulder was in a lot of pain. For both injuries it caused me to have to stop excercising basically all together for probably 4 months each, since i couldnt do any pushing movements and even hang for pullups was unbearable. Wish i wouldve listened to my body snd stopped the shoulder press because my left shoulder wouldve been better off now unfortunately its recovered maybe 80-85% and thats it. Should probably talk to a PT and see if theres some stuff i can do to work on it. But in any case i agree lifting weights especially improperly sometimes can be a big downfall and definitely agree with listening to your body

I like the pillow idea. I will have to try it. I can't seem to stay on my back and have been a side sleeper for years. I have had a lot of problems with my shoulders in fact about 15 years ago I had an MRI done on my right shoulder and they said I was bone on bone. I am 73 now and recently I was having a lot of pain where I could not sleep on my right side. I started doing pushups every other day. After about 2 months I am basically pain free. A little twinge here and there and I am sleeping comfortably on my right side again. I can't say this would work for everyone but it worked for me. I assume, because as the muscles are getting stronger they are stabilizing the shoulder joint.

Lol, my bf teased me a long time ago that when pillows were on sale for me, I bought like 6 of them. Someone also gave me the FAO Schwarz Toasties Sloth for Christmas. That toy actually was the perfect shape to wedge between the shoulder I wasn't sleeping on. I did end up spending $100 on a cooling gel pillow which I use for my head, (but lately I've been using it length wise to sleep on my back and help my neck spine). What seems to work for me too, is placing a normal pillow behind my back and leaning my back on it while turning the head pillow diagonal to cradle the head and rest my arm. I don't think I had much luck placing the pillow under me though, as that seems to make me ache.

I used to have shoulder and lower back pain and I alleviated it by getting a Talalay Latex mattress and a “soft” 2-inch Talalay Latex topper to go on top. It’s extremely pressure-relieving and cushions every part of your body but you don’t “sink” into it like with Memory Foam mattresses. No more pain at all.👍👍They’re very expensive but so what. They last for about 15-20 years.
