Making a 1908 Edwardian countryside blouse

  • Hello everyone,
    I'm Reka.
    I made a 1908 countryside blouse entirely by hand. I used the Truly Victorian TVE47 pattern.
    I love hand sewing and I love Edwardian fashion, so making garments inspired by the era is a pure joy. It took me a long time to make this blouse but it was worth the time and effort. I ran into a few difficulties; sewing yokes, collars, and plackets can be tricky. This blouse is very comfortable and it quickly became my new favourite.
    It was mainly inspired by one of my favourite Avonlea characters, Anne Shirley and the blouses she wore in the 1987 Canadian film production. She was a teacher and I am a teacher as well, so I wanted to have a similar blouse I can wear when I teach. It is nothing fancy but a good start as I am determined to sew a wardrobeful of garments inspired by people from the past - real and fictious.
    If you feel like joining me in my endeavour, please subscribe.
    You can also see my video on making the buttonholes of this blouse. Hand sewn buttonholes, of course!

    What a lovely shirt. I especially appreciated the adaptive method you mention to avoid aggravating back and neck pain and mentioning eyesight. I too endure these issues and have discovered the same method accidentally, months ago. It really helps! I also use a headlamp that comes with a set of different strength of magnification lenses that are more like glasses (not a band around the head). I got this on Amazon and it was not very expensive. It has been a game changer for me. This has made hand stitching much easier and more accurate as everything is illuminated and I can see the close up thread detail easier. Using my knee the same way has made such a difference. Nice to see another do the same! Let's make this common, not an unusual exception. There are so many adaptive ways to do a single task! Beautiful work! I really enjoyed this video.

    I have that exact same pattern and the first time I used it, I was also badly struggling with understanding how to fold the front plackets since english is not my native language. but I made 4 blouses with that pattern so far and at this point, I don't even need to look at the instructions anymore.

      @@APenchantforSewing I am currently in the process of adjusting it and I can't seem to work it out. I must have cut the yoke too large for my collar since I combined pattern sizes as per the Truly Victorian's insctructions.

    This is exactly what I have been looking for! My only problem is I just can't stand anything touching the front of my neck, so I'll have to find some historically appropriate option for the neck area. Any ideas?

    • @APenchantforSewing
      @APenchantforSewing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm afraid this style needs a collar or a neckband and a detachable white collar. You can make the collar but leave the top one or two buttons undone when you wear the shirt. However, that would be historically improper way of wearing it in public. I sometimes leave the top open and turn down the neckband. (I made it very high, much higher than the pattern.) But this turns it into a very modern blouse.

  • @annak1371
    @annak1371 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh my word! HOW? You are so precise. I tried hand sewing a princess seamed barbie bodice. It looked horrible and came apart. How long did this take you?

    • @APenchantforSewing
      @APenchantforSewing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the smaller the garment the more difficult it is to sew. I prefer long seams because I can hold on to the fabric properly and I have to make lots and lots of stitches, which helps me improve. It takes me thousands of stitches to complete my simple projects. You need to practise your sewing skill on life sized projects first because working on miniatures is always more difficult. I spend 8-10 days on my projects, but that is only because I'm very slow. I am able to sew fast, I just don't because I usually live life at the speed of a sloth.

      Welcome to my channel! I'm really glad you like my blouse! It looks simple but I struggled a lot making it. I wouldn't recommend this pattern for a beginner unless you have experience in altering patterns. The plackets are difficult to make and I couldn't use the yoke pattern at all. But I really don't want to discourage you. If you decide to give it a try, you'll need to be prepared for the difficulties. I didn't like this pattern. The sleeves worked well though. Do you also want to handstitch it?

    • @cailamsil
      @cailamsil 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@APenchantforSewing I will take your advice and save this blouse for later. I intended to handstitch it. I will look for a simpler pattern, and regardless of what this will be, I'll handstitch it too.
      Thank you answering my comment!

    • @APenchantforSewing
      @APenchantforSewing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can get hold of an old shirt that no one wants to wear anymore, it could be a good idea to deconstruct it to examine how plackets are made. A man's shirt would do as well you just need to remember that the buttons are placed on the left on a woman's shirt. When a garment is beyond repair I take it apart and I use it as a pattern. This is actually how I happened to have a yoke that I could use to make the yoke of this Edwardian blouse.
      It's always nice to find others who enjoy handstitching!

      I use 11 sharps. I love them. They tend to mysteriously disappear. Some will reappear in my foot, others will be never found. Both ends are really sharp. I can't sew with any other needles. I bought them from John James, I have no idea if brands are any different. The only drawback of these tiny needles is that the eye is so small that it sort of rubs away the thread.
